    The scouts will remember that trip forever. The Okefenokee is a real wilderness. I use to fly small Cessna and Piper airplanes between Jacksonville Florida and Waycross Georgia several times a week and would sometimes fly very low over the swamp and marvel at its beauty and remoteness. These were always single engine aircraft and I remember thinking, "If I crash in that place I'm finished." Fortunately I never had any problems. The 5 gallon bucket is a good idea for safe/dry storage in a canoe. I'm always amazed how "wet" some dry bags can become in rainy weather. Nice video. Greetings from Satellite Beach, Florida.🐊

    You mentioned the mosquitos a few times and now I'm curious about when you were there and if there's a time of year when they're milder.

    Funny how you release this video the day after our troop gets back from a week long trip down the upper Ocmulgee river. We took it slow and only covered about 35 miles this time but since most everyone had their 50 milers from last falls trip down the Oconee, we weren't rushed. The rubber sealed tops from Home Depot worked to keep our food water tight in our 5 gallon buckets. Most of our gear was kept dry in the dry bags you can get from wally world. We avoided using our water filters by requiring everyone to bring 5 gallons of fresh water per person and had extra left over when we came off the river.
    I do wish you could point out that while the gear you use is really nice and makes life a little more comfortable, you can do the same type of trip on the cheap using most of the gear you can piece together from the big box stores and make your self. Out troop has a number of under privileged boys and broke leaders as well, so we try to do our trips as cheap as possible and we went up the AT with less than $200 invested for for the boys and the river trips were even cheaper after the boats were secured and most of them were free by borrowing from friends and family. Just saying, don't use money as the reason to not go, get out and enjoy the world God gave us. Enjoy the vid and keep me coming.
    BTW, we required all of our boys to carry 2 knives, 1 belt knife, PREFER fixed blade to be worn at all times, and a pocket knife to be kept on their PFD's.

    Thanks Brian, this brought back memories. In 1982 my canoeing partner and I, from Ohio, did a cross swamp canoe trip in the Okefenokee, it was in Feb. Saturday was beautiful but Sunday a blizzard hit the area and we finished the trip in snow. It was still a great trip.

  • @alexanderweaver4838

    Brian, you didn't have to rush this video. There are a lot of fans out here who believe in you and what you do...especially with kids. I worked with the Boy Scouts in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and the rewards are tremendous. I taught first aid and two of the boys went on to become doctors in their communities. Anyway, my wife and I are retired now and plan to move to Clearwater unless for some reason she persists on returning to Hawaii. I kayak and plan to do the Okefenokee Swamp. Your tips are really helpful. I took notes and had to watch your video twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. That bucket is a super idea along with that old man easy chair :)...I will have to invest in a canoe (or a Sea Eagle 370). My kayak barely accepts my large waterproof stuff sack, a waterproof backpack and a small cooler plus a modified fishing kit. Thank you, Brian, for a very worthy video, for the work you do as a Scout Leader and as positive influence in our community.

    Brian, thank you for your work with the scouts especially the outdoor skills like canoe camping. I am long retired but spent about 40 years as a guide/instructor on hundreds canoeing and rafting trips. I used those 5 gallon buckets with the Gamma Seal lids for things like kitchen pots, pans, utensils etc but never for things that cannot stand getting wet. I have used a dozen or more and perhaps only 2 of them did not leak when submerged. Indeed they resist water for awhile but soon start to fill up when either submerged or even floating for a time. My advise is do not trust them to be totally waterproof under those circumstances, otherwise they're great to use. Good idea to fill your tub and test them all...don't be gentle. Hope this saves some heartache for your viewers who read this.

      Good point. I also told my guys that if you are flat water canoeing your stuff SHOULDN'T get wet. Whitewater is an entirely different thing.

      Survival On Purpose Brian I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine (16 footer made in 1979). My sons and I will be going down the French Broad River Trail in October. I’m really looking forward to this trip. Between my canoe and their three kayaks we will be a flotilla lol. I hope I can either carry around, line through or handle any rapids.

    My son gave me a Casio Solar G-shock about 10 years ago and it is still going strong. I turn wrenches for a living and it has been knocked around, has held up to brake cleaner, carb. cleaner, gas, you name it. Good watch.

    I watched this last night and wanted to tell you I use coffee packets that are like tea bags. Very lite you just get water hot an dip the coffee bag on a string in and out of a pot,or cup. The more you dip the bag the stronger the coffee. Then you do not have to worry about coffee grounds whch take up space. They do not taste like instant coffee but fresh brewed

    When you camp like that; the thing to always remember is to not skimp on your equipment.It looks like you did not skimp on anything. Except that pillow. There is no way anyone could be comfortable with that thing.

    Great video as always Bryan :) And not at all too long! Really good coverage on gear. Useful tips :) Would work nicely as a basis for packing for a paddling trip :) My friend does sea kayaking regularly (almost all year round if the sea is not frozen) and has asked me to attend many times. Maybe I should someday. After having some kayaking basics course. I like the Klymit Cush. Has been part of my camping ( and my EDC bag) gear for couple years. (Way better than using my boots as a pillow like I used to do for many years.) Along with the Wildo cups and Suunto compasses. They are great :) I have a whole bunch of them. Silva makes a quite nice miniature base plate compass too, does not have rotating bezel though. And also pretty cool one with thermometer. Both have a carabiner for attachment. I have found the Thermacell ( the standard one) having problems in certain places. Does not quite have enough "oomph " for Lapland. I had two of them running at the porch of the cottage and still ended up looking like a human shaped raspberry. Seems that certain type of mosquitos just don´t get repelled easily. Thank you for sharing :) Big thumbs up!

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There policy is you must comply with state law but there are no firearms allowed inside any buildings on the property because they are technically US govt buildings. Which brings up a whole other topic concerning the concept of "government property"e. vs "public property" but I won't get into that here. Bottom line, you can carry firearms in the swamp as long as you comply with Georgia state law
