Man. When I was a little kid my dad used to play this constantly. I remember him lying on the floor in front the TV with the NES controller in his hands. Must have been 88/89. Time flies.
Some friends of my parents rented this game for their kids, and we all got together one Friday night, and we played this game. Man, that must have been back in 1989 or 1990. I would have barely been 3 at that time. I haven't played this game since.
Just finished this game. Last level is quite challenging but one interesting thing I observed and wanted to share is that the final boss does not appear until you have exhausted your MG ammo. Best to just unload it all from one side of screen to make it easy, then do mostly low shots against him except for when he fires high. You should have enough ammo if you got all pickups in the level and don't fire too fast on him unnecessarily.
I could never get past Stage 4. The fact that you only take 2 hits on an 8 block life bar with PATHETIC after-hit invincibility time and the stiff controls make this game, in my opinion, one of the worst Namco arcade games ever. (BTW, if you like this game that's okay - I have nothing against you for it. I'm just retelling my own personal experience from playing it.)
Finally found this game , I saw it on Namco Museum (Nintendo Switch) !! I played this when I was a kid I can't even read yet but grown ups called this "James Bond" game turns out its a completely different game title. glad I found this.
Very tough old school game, a bit tougher than the second game, way tougher than the third. They are all pretty damned fun run and gun titles though. Save Leila in this game, get to use her in the second game, then get stuck with a jabroni named Jay, and another hidden lady character in the third game.
I was the only person I ever heard of actually owning this game in the 90s. It was really fun and i remember Geldra was easy because I had enough MG to wipe him out fast.
Me and my friends all loved this game. I and several others bought it. Practically everybody I knew rented/borrowed this! We were all jacked up for arcade hits like this, the Pac games(especially Pac-Mania), Shinobi, Xenophobe, Spy Hunter, Gauntlet, etc... to come home to the Nintendo. Geldra's the name of the criminal organization; Maboo(the green goblin lookin dude in blue robe) is the leader. Regarding gunning down Maboo: on the Fami/NES versions he won't come out until you use up all of your machine gun ammo.(I've fought him five times or so, and every time that was the case; I also looked it up on the net to make sure...) It *might* work on the arcade version? I dunno, but since I'm gonna try a run through RT on Gamecube Namco 50th Anniversary or the Switch Namco Museum Arcade Pac (depending on which controller is the most comfortable.)sometime in the near future, I guess I'll be finding out!
@@KajuTheRudeMonke I dont think so? I remember just edging through till he was barely visible and just blasting him easily. He was stuck at the corner of the screen. I guess that defines an 'exploit'.
Damn what a port for the NES, that's how to put that system to use. Plays better than Shinobi on the SMS, which was also a very respectable port for its time.
so this is where Code Name Viper was inspired of? they really got a lot out of this game in it, but this one runs smoother and has more detail attention, but i gotta say both games where my childhood and both smith and this protagonist are my favorite agents from NES era

Grew up with the ps2 namco revolution remake, very similar and got to level 4 but the owls would get me every time, I was four at the time. Pac-Man, screw that rip off, the only Zoomer that grew up with arcade games sine the remakes were just about the only games I had at the time
Leila does not give Albatross a smooch on the cheek in the US version, nor does she the arcade, but in the FC version, she shows him a little more appreciation.
@shadowshinobi06 The guys who did the port for this game (Arc System Works) went on to do Codename Viper... It's very obvious when you compare the two. In fact I'd go as far as to say they run on the same Game Engine...

NES version is much harder, and that's not taking anything away from the arcade version which was plenty hard itself. I could get to level 8 but never beat the arcade version. The NES version best I can do is level 3.

Thank you to Atari/Tengen for forcing Nintendo to finally drop their draconian licensing practices with games like this unlicensed "Rolling Thunder", which seemed to me like a decent port.
I never liked Nintendo's draconian licensing practices in the first place. They should have never been strict to their licensing practices cause that's why we never got nice quality games at first. I know they wanted to stay out of Atari's shadow, but censorship is just bad and Nintendo knew better. My least favorite part of Nintendo is heavy censorship within video games only to appeal to children back then. Second most, not enough Daisy in the 1990's.
That's the Tengen version, Nintendo stripped them of being a third party, so they made games that bypassed the Nin-10 chip (the main reason why Nintendo dropped them as a 3rd party developer), and still played on the NES
Hey! What happened to Story 3 & Story 4? Yes, I know that Story 3 goes over the same levels as Story 1 and Story 4 goes over the same levels as Story 2, with more intense enemies, but you had only played half of the game. Your channel name and this title says “complete” and this is NOT a complete runthrough. I know this because every level has a password (unlike what the game wants you to think, by only giving you a password to get back to the level, every OTHER level). Just to prove it, the password for the last level of the game - Story 4, Area 10 is: 6983701.
