I want the Gregory Focal so bad but I can't find it available online anywhere in Canada. Justin, I've been wondering why you don't review MEC products seeing as you're in Canada? I know it's not helpful to American viewers, but would love to see it as someone in Canada. I feel like the price on the MEC Talon -18 down sleeping bag is unmatched, I got one 40% off so $360 CAD for an 800 fill down sleeping bag is amazing! Comparables from other companies are in the $700-$1000 range. MEC deluxe pillow is great too. And I'd love to see you review the MEC Ohm, Volt and Spark tents.
@@jjlansing11 MEC does deliver to the US! There are a few items I think are really good and I chat about them on the channel a lot (my Mica pants and the Expedition Booties). Some of the other items are decent but not really standout in any way.
@@jjlansing11 MEC doesn't have a great name any longer in the enthusiast's camp... particularly after being sold to an investment firm during COVID. That being said, I'd actually like to see how their stuff compared to REI. Now that decathlon is in Vancouver though, I wonder how well MEC will do.
For quilts, Featherstone Moondance quilt has been my go to. Rated for sub-freezing temps, ultralight, and $250. On top of that, they have a lifetime warranty. Can’t recommend it more.
I don't understand the appeal of inner-first tents. They seem to be the norm in the US but these things are such an almighty pain in the butt to pitch or take down in heavy rain. With outer first, it's so convenient: get the outer up, put your rucksack inside and go in and unfold the inner in the dry. Same to break camp: take down the inner and roll it up and pack everything inside in the dry, and then just quickly take down the wet outer and poles at the end.
Nice video! Just switched to the feathered friends hybrid quilt…amazing. Went from Nemo Riff 15 bag, to UGC Quilt, to this and it’s the best of both worlds, super light, blah, blah, blah. lol.
Thank you, Justin for your extensive best gear awards review for 2023! I didn't know about the Exped MegaPillow and will have to check it out! The NEMO Dragonfly 2P is an awesome tent! My husband and I have been wondering about getting trail runners but there are SO many choices! You made it easy with the Hoka Speedgoat 5 shoes which we have been considering! I also like the idea of the Russbe bags to put our food in! You get the best award for this indepth comparison!
I already had the Flextail Tiny X and recently bought the X2 for the inline coupling, which I think is a more robust design and mates more positively with adaptors than the little lateral nozzle on earlier models. I originally thought the built-in light wouldn't be of use with my existing lamp gear, but it's so handy the pump also became my main camp lantern.
I will say, although the half dome 3+ is a really great tent, the hubba hubba 3 is just as big, and definitely way lighter. Now it’s also almost $300 more and that’s not lost on me. So not necessarily comparable as far as price goes, but the weight is considerably better.
REI Flash packs are Great! You seem to be the only TH-camr who appreciates them I have (non-adjustable torso) 55L and 45L; both discontinued. Just bought an REI Magma 30F quilt. Looks really nice. Not sure there is a best channel, they all hock different stuff with their paid affiliate links. You think it's a coincidence that so many of his products that won best awards here are all REI? I think if you want the truly best options, you have to pick pieces from each of them based on your needs, not just blindly follow one. For example, I'd take Zenbivy quilt all day over the ones here. I think both his pillow options suck and prefer REI's compressible pillow. Another example, he shows a $1,000 watch and then he gets to the chair and chooses an REI chair while mentioning budget restraints that's not as good as the Helinox Zero at $80 more. Can't say I find this guy all that genuine.
I’d disagree with all your choices. You need to define “best”. The Helinox chair is the best but the one you choose is a cheap knockoff alternative. So much of what you choose is just your opinion. There’s a world of better options available.

I, too, have seen numerous negatives on the Quick Draw water filter. Sawyer Squeeze is the one all others are measured/compared to & is THE Gold Standard & part of my equipment. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
I’m doing the John Muir next year and though I love my Katadyn, it HAS failed me. Thinking it was user error, though I always slept with it even when mildly chilly, both of my sons had issues too. I bought another and know to soak it and get the flow going before trekking out, but am thinking I want the Sawyer for this several week’s long trip. I bought an REI chair last year. Not only was it cheaper it was on sale! Perfectly comfortable for me, and I no longer wish for a Helinox. Also, the older you are the more your feet needed babying. The Hokas do that.
Official Flash weight limit is 30 lbs but he claims in a different video thread that he’s carried up to 50 lbs ok. Exos’ official limit is 35 lbs. I wonder which handles excess weight better the Flash or Exos, anyone have experience with both?
Garmin Instinct 2x is not good for a long activities. In 6 months two of them died during my ultra-long hikes. Luckily they were under warranty so first was replaced with another Garmin Instinct 2x and after another died I returned it and bought Fenix 7XPro and now I'm happy. I dont recommend Garmin Instinct 2x anymore.
I wouldn't take any of this modern fad gear into the wild hiking. If it works for you great but I like stuff from 100 years ago, as stuff from 100 years ago still works now. Non of this thin lightweight kit will last hard use. Its leather wool canvas and steel for me from now on.
lightweight stuff does wear out and break down quicker. My built-to-last ARMY gear loadout was about 30-40lbs (no food/water) and my "fad gear" weighs about 14lbs. My ARMY "shelter half" (half of a tent) alone weighed about 10lbs and you had to find another soldier to complete the full tent lol.

it's worth noting that Hammock Gear changed up their quilts quite a bit since you posted this.
Ya, it's really too bad.
Dragonfly P2 has been on my wishlist for a year now and I'm glad you mentioned it in this video :)
Backcountry is having an insane 25% off one full-price item and at the same time, the REI just started their sale for 20% off one full-priced item. i MIGHT pull the trigger.
Wish more love would go to ugq quilts they seem to be just as good as ee.
Not everyone can afford UGQ $$$$$$
I was just saying ugq compared to enlighten equipment, yes both expensive and I saved for awhile
the other day I went to sams club and saw some eddie bauer down jackets for $30, I am not sure how it compares to others, but I think it would be good to check out
Eddie Bauer has some amazing deals sometimes but you got to catch them
If its' the 650 or 750 fill they suck
What about Coros Apex Pro or vertix?
I tested a Coros (review on my Gear Priority channel). I didn't like the ecosystem or functionality of the Vertix but what was a deal break for me was the giant dial/button that would trigger activities or stop activities anytime i bent my wrist.
I think it may be a ymmv situation. Only had it happen when doing pushups but hasn't happened on the 3000k of hiking running biking
ugh. I wish I didn't buy the NB10000 Gen 2 because CARBO ULTRA SLIM for another $30 sounds much cooler. lol.. always great gear lists covering something for everyone. Picked up that Exped MegaPillow and seems like it'll be great.
Those are two identical power banks, just the "carbo" one has more rounded corners, so don't be upset :)
All of our camping gear in Australia is built specifically for butane cannisters, which sucks because propane tanks are more stable lol
Had 4 defective quick draws. Buyer beware to test it before taking out. Katadyn befree has not failed me yet.
Quick draw is garbage. Agonizingly slow!
I, too, have seen numerous negatives on the Quick Draw water filter. Sawyer Squeeze is the one all others are measured/compared to & is THE Gold Standard & part of my equipment.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
I've had 3 befrees stop working on the trail for me. Using the quickdraw has been one of the best decisions I have made.
Heh I read this as 'i had 4 rock climbing quick draws fail me' haha I wanna know what brand those were 😅
Can you do a new hot tent load out
at the end you said "trekology mt100 down jacket"
I thought the flash 55 only had a weight limit of 30 lbs?
Official Flash weight limit is 30 lbs but he claims in a different video thread that he’s carried up to 50 lbs ok. Exos’ official limit is 35 lbs. I wonder which handles excess weight better the Flash or Exos, anyone have experience with both?
I must say... The more bells and whistles means more weight. It's in the bag... A string cinch pack...
Wanted to see that new Nemo chair up here, but I guess it's technically not released yet.
Spring 2024
@@JustinOutdoors thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work
Garmin Instinct 2x is not good for a long activities. In 6 months two of them died during my ultra-long hikes. Luckily they were under warranty so first was replaced with another Garmin Instinct 2x and after another died I returned it and bought Fenix 7XPro and now I'm happy. I dont recommend Garmin Instinct 2x anymore.
280$ for a sleeping pad is not a good budget option lol
Flash 55 just went on sale today, steal of a deal.
Got excited about that 0 degree bag for 200! Then I realized you meant 0c not 0f. Not that impressive.
The Durston army will be out to get you for not choosing an X-MID. LOL
Haha, I know right. I'm surprised there hasn't been a #whataboutthexmid comment yet! One of the X-Mids may get a mention in the UL awards ;)
THE BEST BATTERY BANK IN ANKER
I wish you would include Metric measurements, most of the world use the metric system
*fill power down 2:32
2000 dollars 😢
$280 is a budget option???? I wish I could afford that budget.
The real question is, what pants are those? 👀👀👀
Wire haired Dachshund?

Two different. Words 😅😢
Give it a rest. Let us hear your pronunciation of words.
I guess English isn't your native language.
I wouldn't take any of this modern fad gear into the wild hiking.
If it works for you great but I like stuff from 100 years ago, as stuff from 100 years ago still works now.
Non of this thin lightweight kit will last hard use.
Its leather wool canvas and steel for me from now on.
Why not 1000 years ago?
lightweight stuff does wear out and break down quicker. My built-to-last ARMY gear loadout was about 30-40lbs (no food/water) and my "fad gear" weighs about 14lbs. My ARMY "shelter half" (half of a tent) alone weighed about 10lbs and you had to find another soldier to complete the full tent lol.
