Had to add electrical heaters here in Reykjavík in my home. Usually geothermal heating is enough. Double digit frost numbers for many days 🥶 (now +2°C) P.s. Happy New Year 🎉
Hi mark and thank you for this very interesting update. I live in the south east of Hampshire and was so hoping that this very unpredictable low would track further south or even end up a channel low. Unfortunately no such luck , it seems southern areas have missed out for now. I watch with great interest as I’m sure there will hopefully be a few more opportunities of cold weather.
I wonder how off that ECMWF chart is, cant see Ireland get anywhere near 20cm below 200m nevermind 40cm. It must be having a terrible time with forecasting precip type
all these snow predictions by the models are widely different..in other words they havent got a clue, when a cold air mass is in place in january i'd say 24hr forecast can be difficult
Wonder if we will get any snow here in Barrow-in-Furness South Cumbria I'm on the coast. Any chance mark as its normally rain or sleet & my hubby wants to build a ⛄️haha. Its cold as well the gardens been frosty all day. Happy new year to you & the family 🎉
Thanks Mark. Looks like a decent cold snap. FWIW.. not a fan of 'wind chill' relative temperatures. Simply because I have been in -10⁰ with zero wind and sun. Literally working in shirt sleeves. As soon as there was the slightest breeze before we had to grab our pullovers and hats. Also, humidity is rarely factored in, cold dry air can feel significantly less chilly than warmer, damper air. I know the wind chill temps (or met office 'feels like') are supposed to give an indication, but really I think this is kinda nonsense but that's just my opinion.
When you're in the sun and are out of the wind, the air temperature is irrelevant, since you get more heat from the sun, than you'll lose via convection. I bet you'd feel the cold in the shade. Incidentally, when it's cold at night and the air is still, surfaces exposed to the cold sky can get significantly colder than the air temperature. This is why a lot of care is taken to keep thermometers in the shielded from the sun and sky.
Where I live in Rowley Regis West Midlands we are the highest point in the west midlands at over 900 feet according to the met office next Tuesday we see 8 c then going back down again

I'm confused, accumulative snow is expected for Northern Ireland just like most of the UK, but the Met Office still hasn't issued a warning?
Happy New Year Mark and to you all. Looking very interesting at the moment.
