Growing a Cioccolatino here, second winter in a row, we have had nights we -10c min for 2 weeks this year and also 2 weeks of permafrost and 2 months of occasional frost, the tree has survived without any cold damage and is thriving!

I just picked up a very small Nakitas Gift persimmon, Indian Blood Cling peach, and Illinois Everbearing mulberry from Ediblelandscaping.
They are about 4hrs up the road from me so I stopped by for a visit on the way home from a trip out West.

I'm currently growing a Meader Eastern American Persimmon. It's surprisingly small but has a ton of fruit on it already. Going to do a video on it soon.

I'm in zone 5a near Chicago, desperate, please give me some suggestions, like wrapping the trees with plastic covers in the Winter months?

At the time, I didn't think about it, but as a teenager, I came across a wild persimmon tree (not grafted) in zone 7b that seemed happy as any other plant. No idea how it got there but it was a good 40ft tall and loaded with persimmons next to a pond. I've only ever seen persimmon trees personally in 7b twice in my life. The first time I have no idea if it was grafted as it was near a house so probably grafted. The one near the pond was very likely from seed as that pond was manmade in the 1960s and was a hippy hangout apparently until the 70s sometime. Probably a hippy persimmon tree. For whatever reason, it seems persimmon trees in my area are just practically non-existent. I've spent a LOT of time hiking through wild areas in my area of zone 7b and have only saw that one wild persimmon and have never encountered any paw paws. Seems pecans are a little rare too, but they can be found. My strangest discovery was a dogwood tree that was a good 60ft tall and very straight. Never seen anything like that before or since.

Anyone have experience growing persimmon in zone 4? Meader looks to be the only one listed as zone 4 but I kinda don’t trust that it would survive -30

Very interesting. Nikita's Gift is really tasty. Kakis can also be grown in a pot. We are also testing them out here.

Ross do you recommend any winter protection for a first year nikitas gift in zone 7a out in the open?
