  • After the 2004 Grand Final, my Dad, my cousin and I went down the highway to see what was left of Waverley Park during it's redevelopment. It's sad to see the Light Towers didn't stay long after this but at least 8 bays of the main grand stand are still there to this day

Sad pictures of what remained of a once great football stadium. Watching this short piece of footage felt like going to a funeral.

So sad that this ground was shut down.
The home of a Grand Final, the home of World Series Cricket. Wayne Daniel hitting a six to win a World Series match for the Windies.
I was there when Justin Madden kicked a goal from outside 50 vs Adelaide in the 1993 Semi Final.
    Great memories at this ground.

Great vid. The music and grey, overcast day captures the mood of what's left of this once proud stadium.

@J G Wow! 240 countries, eh? That'd be a neat trick - considering there are only 195 countries in the world. Tool.

Very sad……..a dream that just faded…..but what is also incredible is the expansion of housing in 20 years……unbelievable…

Absolute disgrace. I grew up in Springvale following the Cats. Went there many a time and loved it. So so sad. Great memories tho.

To this day I still go there to kick the footy even though I’m only 15 but it’s a great ground to go to and the best to kick the footy.

Waverley Park was the first Aussie rules game I ever went to, in 1989. Hawks v North.

I remember going there in the 1970's good times.

Surprisingly the original 1970s Johns and Waygood lifts in the surviving grandstand section survived and are still operating today with only their buttons, indicators and cab interiors updated more recently! :)

    Quite sad watching this
    It was an awesome stadium
They should have at least kept the whole members stand ,,,

    thanks for showing..
such a shame ..sadens me .somany great memories ..footy cricket..rock concerts..could have been a super stadium...it was always a threat to the mcg...imagine a direct train line to ground..would have been sensational..bulldoze etihad... what a shithole..

Danny Miller Etihad is a good stadium but this ground should never have been bulldozed except for that one grandstand. I agree a direct train line from flinders street to the ground would've been perfect. It just had so much promise and it was great to watch footy at long live Waverley park.

interesting to see how much the area has changed in (almost) 20 years. Looked like the middle of the countryside then which is definitely isn't today. Would be cool if some sort of reserve league footy was played there again (VFL, AFLW) but I'd doubt that'd happen with all the housing development around the venue

Great video. But so sad to see a great stadium destroyed like that.
I’ve only been to the footy about 4-5 times since Waverley.

i was born in 2007, but i wouldve loved to have gone to this ground when it was in use before demolition
i have been to waverley park before, on fathers day a few years ago we had lunch at the nice little restaraunt there is at the main entrance, and my dad and i had a kick there on the oval and we sat at the bottom of the grand stand
too bad marvel replaced it, its a damn shame

I grew up near the ground but was born well after it closed, would be cool only having to travel a few k's to the ground on a regular. Marvel is a bit of a shithole also so yes it does suck
