#33 | Sailing to the Faroe Islands: I should've seen this coming!

- Join us on our sailing adventure through the wild Atlantic Ocean from Scotland to the Faroe Islands!
In this gripping episode, we'll share the highs and lows of our voyage from Stornoway to Tvøroyri on the island of Suduroy, facing the raw power of Mother Nature head-on. The North Atlantic Ocean is known for its unpredictable weather, and soon, massive waves make Kathrin seasick for the first time. We witness a breathtaking sight - the sun dipping below the horizon in the north for about 4 hours before rising again almost in the same place.
However, our voyage takes a dramatic turn as we find ourselves in an uncomfortable and dangerous situation. Navigating through an area where 3-meter breaking waves are beaten up by strong tidal currents and gale force winds becomes a true test of our guts and skills.
As we approach the Faroe Islands, we're welcomed by a stunning landscape of majestic fjords and towering cliffs. But the islands also greet us with Force 10 winds roaring out of the fjords, reminding us of the untamed power of the elements.
Despite the adversity, we safely reach the port of Tvøroyri. Our last challenge is docking Polaris in winds exceeding 40 knots. And we witness a cruise ship that runs aground on the harbour pier, serving as a stark reminder of the risks and skills required in navigating these waters.

Perhaps I looked calm, but I was tense in that moment… I knew the boat would make it if I didn’t make a mistake that would lead to a gybe or get us beam on to the waves. So, it was all depending on me. Thanks for watching!
hi guys that was an exciting and very informative trip ,those 4 metre swells in the beginning were noticeable on screen ,and the hand steering into the Faroes looked more than exciting.i also noticed adventure now had a rough trip as well ,on there video last week I got a good look at your swept back spreaders you discussed last we chatted ,I do see your problem with down wind sailing ,a spinnaker pole ,and a more modern sail ie, code zero or cruising type spinnaker will be required for trade wind type of sailing ,but hey your out there and doing it. enjoy the videos cheers rob nz

We do have a cruising chute which we use seldom. With 150sqm it‘s a handful to manage and only for lighter winds… we are thinking about getting a pole, but for the moment I think we can manage… we shall see…

Another great video, enjoyed the editing as well. On a passage like that you come away with so much, not what you expected but your excellent planing and boat preparation gave you the best possible chance of a safe passage. Great team work, well done Kathrin for managing to smile through it, it’s not a nice feeling and Daniel you have a cool head when the going gets tough which means all your energy is focused on successfully managing your boat in these really testing conditions. Hope things now quieten down for a while!

What an exciting video! I liked the switching between actual footage and explanation. I can only image how tense you must have been. Watching the video I realized I was clutching my mobile with full force as if I wanted to help you holding on to the steering. And of course I saw you 🤬, Daniel so it must have been pretty bad.

That was a great passage - we enjoyed that (probably more than you did 😄) and there was a few times we found ourselves nodding in agreement with you when your future self was pronouncing on your "mistakes". The truth is, it happens to all of us - we all make bad decisions. As for the dependability of the forecast... 🤣🤣
Thank you for your wise words! We are just enjoying another one: as I write (courtesy of Starlink) these lines we are passing the oil platforms on our way to Bergen… again, we assumed from the forecast we would be motoring a lot - had gusts >30kts last night… defo not in the forecast…
@@sailingpolaris - In our experience, we generally add a Force to the forecast, so if it says F5 it means F6 😃
@SailingYachtSaltyLass we started going with the gust force from the GRIB files as the „normal“ wind force…
@@sailingpolaris - we always use the "Gust forecast" as it seems much closer to real life. Also, we are glad to see you are in OK
And another one where this strategy was right: forecast benign winds, gusting below 20 - gusts >30 for a good hour…

Ha, we‘re not that much of coffee nerds (except that I NEVER drink instant coffee and don‘t like filter coffee…). I need a good boost of caffeine in the morning to get me going, Kathrin is decaf.
We had a Nespresso coffee maker before but getting the capsules can be a hassle in certain places, notwithstanding the recycling of them.
So, when it broke we looked for a solution and found it in this. Takes any type of ground coffee. We get our coffee from the supermarket… We grind the beans ourselves in the kitchen blender as this is the black magic: to have the correct fineness of the coffee so that the water passes at the optimal pressure… (ofherwise we‘re back to filter coffee… see my entry statement… 😎)

My wife and I are planning a similar trip from south Britany (La Trinité sur mer) to Lofoten isles (via Ireland, Scotland, Orkneys, Sheytlands). Could you please provide us the exact references for your intercom helmet? Our boat is smaller (38 feet long) but we need an easier communication when mooring and in strong winds as well. Hello Polaris, amateur sailor here learning from your videos... were you going downwind when at the overfalls and enduring these 50+ knot winds and was this the reason for a concern about an accidental gybe? If it had happened with that wind strength, would this have broken the boom? Probably doesn't bear thinking about but what were the risks you could foresee? Thank you
Thanks for watching! The 52kts were later in the video when we crossed the fjord into Vágur.
In the overfalls we were between a broad reach and a run in F8-9. This limited our ability to bear off and get into deeper water faster and further away from the rocks (without gybing). We had a preventer on, so, in an accidental gybe this should have stopped the boom from going over. In these overfalls with steep short waves it was difficult to hold the course, so, yes, the risk of an accidental gybe was there.
It is quite possible that this would have broken the rig.
Frankly, during that situation my instinct was to keep the boat on course as deep in the wind as possible without losing control. I knew that by doing this I would not get closer to the rocks but I could not get into calmer, deeper water easily.
Old swell, strong wind and opposing tide in shallowing water are a dangerous mix…
