Not sure when this happened, but ads have been automatically added to the video because of the copyright holders.
It's very intrusive, and I just hope Robert Rich himself is receiving some money from this, not only the copyright holders, but who knows.
    A few ways around:
    - Listen to the album on Robert Rich's official Bandcamp robertrich.bandcamp.com/album/somnium (free streaming, 20$ download)
    - Use brower extensions like uBlock Origin or any adblocker (PC)
    - Use alternative TH-cam front-end apps like Vanced (Smartphone)
    - Subscribe to TH-cam Red

This was the first ambient track I ever found and lead me to discover some of the most beautiful and otherworldly tracks out there. This by far holds a special place in my heart. I remember discovering it at college and just letting it run while the classroom was quiet and everybody was working. It was between this and 8 hours of night train, another track which holds a place in my heart. Somnium, 8 Hour Night Train, Brad McBride and William Basinski's Watermusic II' were my introduction to ambient music, so peaceful and relaxing.

The flute keeps blue balling me by never hitting F after hitting F# or D#. You expect F to be the next note in the scale, it should be the next note in the scale, but the flute fades out before hitting F. It’s obnoxious. But it also evokes emotions of longing, loss, and dread. I respect it.

This is more spiritual to me than spooky. It makes me feel...everything that once was at the beginning or perhaps the end of time. Then again it feels timeless. If you dedicate yourself to REALLY listening and leave behind all preconceived ideas of what is frightening and just listen to what you hear, you may hear and feel many things, even fear is there for a reason. This is more than "spooky" - It is the sound of life and birth and water, air , birds, breath...it is all that life holds. It is a true masterpiece. Leaving this world for now and opening the door to a better reality...unknown, yet peaceful and exciting. Fills me with a somewhat melancholy longing for somewhere, sometime...Thank you for sharing this world with all of us who love it. Peace to all, everywhere. Off to dreamland.

Find what lies at the end to awaken your inner you. To finally be free and achieve eternal bliss. To awaken from a cocoon to free yourself and become one. With yourself.

I've used this for meditation for years. A long time ago, there used to be an iOS app officially licensed by Robert Rich that played segments of each hour of Somnium in random, mixed order infinitely. You could adjust how long it took for the app to change segments. It was a fantastic ambient music app, but sadly it kinda disappeared from the app store years ago. I have an old first-gen iPod touch with this app and I still use it, but unfortunately it's kind of trapped in time...even if you took the app and manually installed it on a newer iOS device, it won't work since it was never updated for the new versions of the OS.

one gets a great sense of peace and tranquillity from listening to parts of Somnium.
the widespread water sounds, either dripping from forest canopy or sounding like water sloshing against a boat , slow moving bass sounds , echoic reverberant feel.

this music with or without electronics exist since 40 or fifty days with tangerine dreams , klaus schultze , terry riley as pioneers ... and " the beat goes on " with news musicians , new technology , but it's always the same thing . In a style more ( ! ) dark , listen " phragments and Corinth " or " dark-Ambiant archives ( mixed session ) " ... Good trip , and excuse me for my bad english .

I think the true meaning as to why this incredibly eery and dark ambient music is so calming is because we as humans find comfort and ease of mind in safety from the unknown. The differences in reaction to this music in a light forest or a pitch dark forest example this.

very well said, jamesedwardtheobald ... seems sometimes like music for music's sake is most enjoyable w/ out having to liken it to a specific film, a particular era or style or other cultural reference, (but maybe a lot of the people who feel that way don't post comments to youtube ?) in any case, thanks for pointing that out, music was probably more enjoyable when imagination 'met it 1/2 way', before it started getting re-purposed for films and other commercial uses

I love many ambient artists, my 2nd fave is Stars of the Lid, but Robert Rich is easily the best and should be in his own category. This man paints with sounds! If you like this one, check out his Perpetual, and Humidity. Nice long recordings that soothe and color and calm the overactive mind.
