This footage may be from the URGH movie, but this was the first of two shows that were scheduled for that night. I had tickets for both. However, during first show, a guy jumped on stage and while there, reportedly yanked some wiring and damaged the sound system or lights. Devo finished the 1st show, but had to cancel the 2nd show. The Riverside official appeared on the roof of Raincross Square with a mega phone announcing the 2nd show was cancelled. The large crowd waiting outside was not happy and expressed said unhappiness by smashing nearly all of the two story glass windows making up the entrance to the auditorium. This action was followed shortly thereafter by the arrival of dozens of Riverside's finest in riot gear delivering numerous cans of tear gas, both near the entrance and in the underground parking, which prevented anyone from getting to their car. In the end, it was all pretty exciting for what was normally boring little Riverside. Devo returned, under heavy police presence, about four weeks later and rocked a two hour show. At the very end, Boogie came on stage in an electric wheelchair, drove to the front of the stage and proclaimed, "This is for you Riverside," at which time of tossed a bass guitar into the crowd. Long story short, it took 20 minutes to peel people away after the lights came on and there was one guy left on the floor with his body wrapped around the instrument. He refused repeated instructions from security telling him to set the bass down, so finally 4-5 security officers picked him up and carried him from the arena, as he remained wrapped around the instrument. Thus, we know this film is from the first show cause there is no appearance by boogie at the end. Saw so many great shows at Raincross back in the day...The Police, Oingo Boingo, Adam Ant, Berlin, G. Night & the Pips, Eddie Money, Cheap Trick, Rick Derringer and the Baby's, INXS, Missing Persons, X, Billy Idol....those were great times.
We had our Junior Senior Prom @ Raincross Square. It was funny. At the time, all we wanted to know was where the heck Riverside was. That was in 1984. Ironic because I've now lived in the great City of Riverside for 26 years!
Was at almost all of those shows you listed. This one is the most memorable because of the riot and the fact my buddy Mike Coco caught the guitar from BoogieBoy but it got ripped from his hands. Great show though... I also remember it like yesterday. Before the video started streaming I was ready for the fog filled stage and the backlight and Bob coming out waving the flag. GREAT Memories! and thanks for putting this up. -Sleepy
Thanks for letting me relive that concert from 40 years ago. Remember it like yesterday and even saw us in the crowd at one point, you can't miss Coco's curly mop ;-)
I was in the square waiting for the 2nd show and clearly remember the police helicopter over our heads.. then 4 mounted police officers arrived at the corners of the square and the crowd was gone in seconds...
I was there. Remember after that first show there was a guy in line waiting for the 2nd show that had the jack Daniel's bottle. I remember saying to him party dude. Well that Jack bottle was throwing at the windows and broke one of the windows. Classic!!!
Remember Sparks/Vapors @ Raincross that was a blast, Bill Duffy and I ate our weight in Del Taco before the show, and of course there was plenty of weed n beer too.
I stand corrected, a 1:10:25, boogie arrives on stage to deliver the gift instrument to the Riverside crowd. thus, this is the second or make-up show the spud boys played after the riot show several weeks earlier.
I was there the night of the riot, waiting for the 10:30pm show with my friend. First time (only time) I inhaled tear gas. I remember people throwing bottles at the plate glass windows in front., and later personnel in riot gear emerging from the front entrance. It was just one big mob of people in front. Came back for make-up show at a later date. I vaguely remember they were taping the shows, but technical difficulties forced then to postpone the show, leading to the riot. I was 18 then. I still have the ticket stub.
I was there too. I remember the acoustics were not too good, but we had a great time. I remember seeing Eddie Money there as well. Loved Raincross Square.
I have to disagree with the date mentioned in the title. Freedom of Choice was released August 14, 1980. Whip it was the single from that album released at the same time. From this crowd's reaction to, and singing along with Whip It, this show couldn't have been two weeks after the record's release. Maybe later in the year, but not August.

The other thing that was most memorable was the strobe light boxes on stage. I think it was Gates of Steel where they were all lit up.

I remember seeing the guy with the bass after the show.
I was at the UK Newcastle City Hall show for this Tour. Sneaked in for the Soundcheck.
Classic! Was there as well as pretty much every other show throughout the 80s. Not sure if I paid for any. Incredible memories.
I was there. Right up front.
I was there too. I remember the acoustics were not too good, but we had a great time. I remember seeing Eddie Money there as well. Loved Raincross Square.
Crowd's going nuts!
I was there at this concert, in the back on some demented bleachers,
There's a mild scuffle at 59:58 when Bob1 jumps in the crowd, he even loses his guitar.
I remeber that, was glad I was not on that side ;)
No, Boogie threw the bass into the crowd…see prior entry below

They only played two shows ever at this venue. Date is correct
Smart patrol / mr. DNA is lit
Do we know who originally shot this concert? I’d love the opportunity to transfer the original tapes on high-end equipment.
I just have it on disc
