It's even hard to follow Sherlock with subtitles on. So many times I just have to pause to read the subtitles properly. He just speaks soooooo fast.

Watching *Sherlock* in english with english subtitles really boosted my level of english. I literally could notice that my grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation had improved in just a few weeks/months! All I had to do was pay attention and repeat the words I didn't know. Plus the plot is original and the actors are absolutely breathtaking! *Thank you for your video Lucy :)*
when you mentioned Sir David Attenborough my heart melted, I wish I had his address to write him and tell him he taught me english without even knowing, I can't recommend him enough as a teacher of an accent and the language
I watched 12 seasons of doctor who, sometimes with subtitles, sometimes without them and it made me understand british accent so wELL?? The amount of words I learned thanks to this series and accents... woah.
'Fawlty Towers': I don't know if I missed it in the comments but if you want to watch a great sitcom with Sir John Cleese (much, much younger), wish to hear some fantastic impromptu slang, RP and other accents, and find out how British sitcoms have evolved over time.... Don't miss it. Manuel says, 'Si Senor. You must watch this!'
Seeing Doctor Who in this list is wonderful! I'm Turkish and at high-school my English grades were awful. And one day I started to watch Doctor Who. After that day, both my English grades and my perspective of morality changed. I learned a lot from The Doctor, besides English. And at the meantime, my English level increased without any extra effort.
I love Doctor Who, it's been teaching me so much, not only about British English, but also about living a better life. Thank you so much for adding it in your list.
I also recommend the Early Who's, which are children's shows, but also, Blue Peter. Some of them are on YT. I discovered BP through Dr. Who commentaries. BP's target market is also children.
How did Downton Abbey not make the list? I loved it and would recommend it to any of my friends who want to start watching British productions without synchronization. Especially since in synchronization the accents do not survive, at least in the German translation, even though in German there would be tons of accents to choose from.

My parents didn’t understand it either and they’re in their seventies and we’re born here. Even if you get the words it’s so complicated that a lot of people don’t get it.
I'd recommend Peaky blinders for intermediate level They speak pretty slow and in a clear accent, although there is a diverse range of accents used with other side characters, and they use lots of different words and phrases, it's especially good for vocabulary. It's also one of the best British TV shows and one of the best internationally too an its based off a Birmingham gang
I think Downton Abbey is a great tv show too and it really helped me improve my English because there are so many different accents like RP, Cockney, Irish and Scottish
I missed "The Crown" as a recommendation. It was perfect for me to improve my English and British accent understanding, and of course to learn more about recent history of UK, Europe and whole Commonwealth countries.
I´m from Spain and I absolutely love David Attenborough. I grew up watching his nature programs (dubbed into spanish, of course) but later I started to rewatch them in english.
Fawlty Towers was recommended when I started work in UK and one of my coworkers brought me DVD. Pure british humor. Sometime they cross the line. It would not acceptable now. That's why I love it.
My mum and I have been watching the mini-series Good Omens in English and it really helps us learning. I would say it's on an intermediate level, but we found it way easier than Sherlock and Doctor Who. I also recommend BBC Merlin, it's set in medieval ages so it's not necessarily good for learning currently used vocabulary, yet it helps me a lot to get used to the sound of British accents!
What about Downton Abbey? The people from ‘upstairs’ speak with RP and most of the servants have Yorkshire accents. And there is also someone with an Irish accent (Tom) and someone with a Scottish accent (Mrs Hughes). And the show is just awesome and very entertaining and I’d really recommend watching it especially because of Maggie Smith’s character. Good Omens is also really great and as Broadchurch it also stars David Tennant and a lot of Queen Songs are in it. It’s also absolutely hilarious and intriguing. Another show I’d recommend is Fleabag! It’s funny and about daily topics and the main character is really relatable. And I definitely need to watch Broadchurch now, I didn’t know it stars David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker AND Olivia Coleman. If you want to have an American accent I’d recommend watching Friends, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, any Star Trek series or Grey’s Anatomy. Or if you are into that sort of stuff, The Bold Type or The Marvellous Mrs Maisel. You could as well watch Killing Eve for lots of different accents. For movies I’d definitely recommend the Harry Potter films! And The Favourite!
G P Yes, you are right Downton Abbey is just perfect for learning English! And you can see different accents this is really awesome. And Maggie Smith is the best ❤️😃
I watched Merlin since I was 8 & I'm really obsessed with it until now. I think this show is perfect for younger audiences coz you'll never see any blood when they are fighting :)
Hi Lucy, I've discovered your channel a month ago and I've become a huge fan of your work! We are from Argentina. My daughter started watching Peppa Pig when she was 2 years old, and since I couldn't stand the Spanish accent of the translated version, she starting watching it in english (also because in english, she would find many more episodes!). She then continued watching movies and many other cartoons and series in english. And she is now bilingual, at the age of 7. She has a perfect pronunciation... I'm amazed at how the method you are suggesting really works!
Thank you so much Lucy! I am glad I came across this video for my 14 year old daughter who has no English teacher at school at the moment. I was struggling finding something suitable for her to practice her listening skills! Thanks to you we now have good options to move forward! Greetings from France!
I remember when I watched Sherlock for the first time, I couldn't keep up with Benedict at all. It was back on 2014, and it was my first year of learning English properly. At first it made me feel bad about myself, as if I wasn't good enough or I wasn't doing enough. But when I calmed down, I looked at it as a challenge. Now I can proudly say that I've watched the whole show multiple times and I love it. It's brilliant! I would also recommend Peaky Blinders. I'm absolutely in love with the show, especially the accent. Before watching the show, I believed that RP is the most beautiful accent. As it turned out, I was wrong! The Birmingham accent is just something amazing. And obviously writing and acting is superb.
I tried with "Sherlock" but I could not understand anything and I thought "English is impossible, it isn't for me" hahaha so I thought that I should watch children's programs and now I'm seeing "pocoyo" hahaha. But series like "the walking dead" I can understand, maybe because the American accent is more easier.
@@wendyclcl thank you very much for your comment!!! I'd like to try it but... I haven't found it on amazon prime where I watched Downton Abbey. Do you know where I can find it?
What I recommend is: The Last Kingdom. I really like the colourful pronunciation of Uthred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Draymond), especially in the later seasons.
Children's tv show: Rick and Morty Family guy Nature program: Ancient aliens history channel Cooking program: Kitchen nightmare The f word Sitcoms: Monty python Dramas: Peaky blinders The Irishman Comedy panel shows: Monty python (again)
Um. Those "Children's TV Shows" aren't for children. If any parents are reading, please don't leave your seven year olds after putting Rick and Morty on lol.
Was about to write a comment on that show. I've been able to follow panel shows like wilty, QI and so on for years but fookin' Peaky Blinders? No way, mate. Do Brits actually understand a word? As a German I don't stand a chance.
Thank you very much! I love all your recommendations, really great choice of programmes. I just wanted to chip in with a comment about "pre-int" level. I adore David Attenborough and his work; but I was astonished when you mentioned that his programmes are relaxing. I wept all through "Our Planet" and "Plastic Ocean" and was aghast at the damage the humanity is causing. He makes you question your life and your choices, which is all but relaxing. It's heartbreaking to watch his latest works. Don't get me wrong, these documentaries are eye-opening and ground-breaking; David Attenborough changed my life completely and I agree that the language is very accessible. I just can't get my head around your words about how calm and relaxing the documentaries are... I was all tense and crying. I admit, I haven't watched his earlier works and maybe you were mostly referring to them, but the ones I did see overwhelmed me to the point of losing my sleep at night. I am not making any reproaches, not at all. You are a wonderful ray of sunshine for me, I love you videos and truly appreciate your help to us, learner of English. But I couldn't help myself, I felt compelled to speak out here. Lots of love, Lucy, and thank you again for doing what you do ^^
@@vineetnagavi3689 It's not Gypsian, it's brummy/black country accent, which is an accent from Birmingham. Their accent is from the area they live in not the fact that they're gypsies. Everyone there speaks like that.
I've been seeing "the crown" but my English is not good and I just understood a few thing. I must practice but British English is hard to learn, but the hope is the last thing that we should loss.
OMG, I just HAD to pause the video to say this: I LOVE the Scottish accent! It is quite difficult to understand "aye", but I love it! Well.. actually, I love everything about Scotland. Lucy, you MADE MY DAY with this recommendation. Thank you very much and sorry for any mistakes, my English is a work in progress.
I love your music at the beginning, your style, your hair, your accent, your humour, your videos in the countryside and although I'm French I totally recommend you ahahah! You're the besssstttt
Man, QI is the best series ever. I am German and have been watching it since around the third series. It's pretty much perfect. A blend of humour, interesting facts and wholesomeness. Brilliant! There's a series that I would like to recommend. It's a bit older, but it's the coolest, smoothest series I know. It's called "Hustle" and it's about a group of extremely likeable and clever con artists who only con bad people. One of my all time favourites. If you like House or Holmes, this could very well be up your alley. Oh, and as for comedy: A Bit of Fry and Laurie.
I'm a simple woman, I see Sherlock I press like. Btw, I consider myself quite good at English, and Sherlock's English level seems quite advanced to me! If you have an intermediate level I'd recommend watching it with the subtitles on 😉
Surprised that you didn't mention Downton Abbey! Would it rather be intemediate or advanced in your opinion?? Great video as usual. You are so inspiring Lucy😊
I would recommend something advanced and sometimes funny: The House of Commons debates LOL And I truly admire how Speaker John Bercow uses English, academically and astonishingly!
I would love to see other videos on podcasts and books : ) Thank you for your TV series recommendations, I will definitely have a look at some of them!
Whatever you’re trying to achieve, guys, staying motivated is the key to success. Learning English can be tough, so it’s useful to focus on the improvements learning English will make to your life. And Btw To learn English , guys, you should only do one thing . You should practice. Yeah practice. try to go back in time and imagine yourself as a baby. How could you learn your mother language? By listening, right! Listening and trying to speak. Try and make mistakes .it's fine, But in the end i promise you. You will do it.
Hi, actually all what you wrote it's true. And I want learn English but I don't know any body to practice with ,so if you don't mind can I practice with u please.
@@sadael6290 I'm also looking for English learning partner with whom i can practice, but my English is not good enough as the writer of the above comment has 😒
For me the best way to learn English was reading on a Kindle with dictionary installed. I read Harry Potter in my native language like 5 times before i started to read it in English, so i knew what almost every sentence was meant to say, but if i didn't know word or two i just long pressed that word and it showed me the description of it. By doing this over those 7 books, you get to know English a lot and after a while you can start watching sit-coms with subtitles with no problem to understand most of them. Then you will somehow become lazy to download subtitles to everything you watch so you would do it less and less and suddenly realize you don't need those. Maybe this will help someone, keep going guys. Good luck
For intermediate or advanced speakers I would definitely recommend the Outlander series. It covers various accents, Scottish mainly, English, American and also you can hear some of the Scottish Gaelic. It really is a masterpiece which takes you on a journey through the 18th century Scottish Highlands.
For sitcom, my recommendation goes to Coupling. Except being THE best comedy ever, it's got excellent pronunciation by all characters and Sarah Alexander with the most beautiful accent. There are also, fast paced action/comedy -Keen Eddie. Good Omens -the best Doctor Who David Tennant in new quirky role. And for pre-intermediate Midsomer Murders.

I fund it absolutely impossible to understand what people are saying in this show honestly
Ohhh, I absolutely love Good Omens! I'm definitely watching Broadchurch, too, just to see more of David Tennant:)
Elifsu Akın For American accent also watch Small Wonder
Why don't you include The Big Bang Theory into your American accent list?
''English with LUCY'' it's like a movie .... best English and Awesome teaching
I watched Merlin since I was 8 & I'm really obsessed with it until now. I think this show is perfect for younger audiences coz you'll never see any blood when they are fighting :)
Asuna hamilton you should have watched ROME ^_^
@@awesomereviews1561 There's nothing wrong with Merlin. It's a lovely show!
broadchurch

now I'm officially allowed to tell my mum that I'm watching these shows not just for fangirling, but to study English
I love "IT crowd" and "Keeping up appearances".. Greetings from Italy.
I love IT crowd too!!!
People will definitely learn the word "team" by watching the 1st episode. :D
I recommend watching Harry Potter movies
That would be the hard level, right? 😭
That's like basic level
They are 100% accurate as well
Yes! And READ potter books after watching one movie, you'll read in their accent! I've tried this.
The films are like B1 level XD kinda easy and all of them speak sooooo properly and "slow"
Life is less stressful to have Lucy teaching English during lockdown.
"Mind your language" is also brilliant for learning and absolutely funny.
After your comment I searched mind your language and I started to watching it :) it's hilarious brother, thank you so much :)
I would definitely love that this was a series of British recommendations! (podcast, tv series, movies, etc)
I totally agree 💯
Do you have any advice for me?? Anything helps me
Peaky blinders is truly amazing
thomas shelby
Sherlock would be C1/C2 level. Especially C2.
Why can't I see anyone talking about Downton Abbey ? I've loved their accent so much, felt like a lord using it during classes xD
I've just finished to watch Downton Abbey and I miss it now. Do you know something smiliar to watch?
I love Downton Abbey too. May be the language is too proper for modern day use?
Julie Naumova give call the midwife a try. It is also from BBC.
@@wendyclcl thank you very much for your comment!!! I'd like to try it but... I haven't found it on amazon prime where I watched Downton Abbey. Do you know where I can find it?
@@julienaumova5433 Poldark is amazing or Victoria.
What I recommend is: The Last Kingdom.
I really like the colourful pronunciation of Uthred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Draymond), especially in the later seasons.
Benedict Cumberbatch is speaking soooooo fast asf :")
He always known for it, at some tv shows like James Cordon and etc, he could speak fast. his pronunciation is also really good!
The most beautiful teacher in the world!🤗😍
Thank you very much lucy. It's the best british tv shows recomendation i have ever found
I recommend Mr.Bean for higher advanced language learners... he speaks a very complicated accent of English 😂
Are you kidding me?! 😂😂😂
HAHAHAHAHA
Hi persian
😆 LOL Dude 😆
Mr. Bean uses more words than Sherlock indeed.

Exactly☺️
Um. Those "Children's TV Shows" aren't for children. If any parents are reading, please don't leave your seven year olds after putting Rick and Morty on lol.

Didn't expect Dr. Who on this list. Love it!
Gracias querida Lucy. Justo estos dias estaba buscando series para aprender English. ¡Me salvaste!

I love Scottish accent as well and love watching Outlander ❤️
Can you tell me where we can watch Katie Morag ?
I'm learning by watching everything in English is amazing
Upper-Proficiency C3 level: Peaky fookin' Blinders
best comment ever HAHA
Это типо самый самый верх английского?
By order of the peaky fookin blinders
I've just started watching it in English and God, it's so fookin haard
Was about to write a comment on that show. I've been able to follow panel shows like wilty, QI and so on for years but fookin' Peaky Blinders? No way, mate. Do Brits actually understand a word? As a German I don't stand a chance.
I truly love Faulty Towers and Keeping up appearances. ❤️
Lots of love, Lucy, and thank you again for doing what you do ^^
I absolutely love David Attenborough's documentaries. 💖

It's not in British accent.... It's Gypsian
lol
This place is under new management...
@@vineetnagavi3689 It's not Gypsian, it's brummy/black country accent, which is an accent from Birmingham. Their accent is from the area they live in not the fact that they're gypsies. Everyone there speaks like that.
@@olliert4840 but they don't even look like gypsies, very strange. Gypsies are dark and they have brown skin with coal-black hair
Topsy & Tim is also a great children's TV show as they talk about different life situations it helps you understand the language within a context.
'The Crown' is a very good one too! I learned a lot with that TV series🥰
you didnt watch enough :D (learnt not learned)
@@DanielR.122 both are correct :D mr fool go learn again if u r this bad atleast do a research before talking 😉
I've been seeing "the crown" but my English is not good and I just understood a few thing. I must practice but British English is hard to learn, but the hope is the last thing that we should loss.
I was just about to write "why she did not mention The Crown". Fortunately someone already thought about it :)
I love it!!!
Why didn't you mentioned "Peaky Blinders"?
The most amazing and helpful show in order to learn accent.. i learned a lot from that show..
Me too!!
It seems to me that Lucy focuses on the most commonly meat accents. In the Peaky Blinders they speak brummie.
I find Peaky Blinders extremely difficult to understand and I understand most tv series

There was this old BBC series “Mind Your Language” . I learnt a lot from that programme
That is basic. But it's really good.
It's an *ITV* show.
It has nothing to do with the *BBC.*
Where is it?? On Netflix o..?

If you have an intermediate level I'd recommend watching it with the subtitles on 😉
Where could I found there series?
The same!:)

Surprised that you didn't mention Downton Abbey! Would it rather be intemediate or advanced in your opinion??
Great video as usual. You are so inspiring Lucy😊
Katharina M Definitely intermediate I think! Not very many jokes and half the cast speak incredibly clearly.
Y enjoy english in Donwton Abby and The Bridgertons.
I absolutely love Downton Abbey
My favorites are Call the midwife and Downton Abbey. I learned a lot with both.
I watched them both! You might wanna watch "The crown" next if you haven't already. Also a comedy called "bad move".
How about "Keeping up appearances" and "Little Britain"? I love this shows
Thank you for the list. I am not British but I recommend The IT Crowd, After Life, and The Crown. I loved those and they helped me a lot.
I would recommend something advanced and sometimes funny: The House of Commons debates LOL
And I truly admire how Speaker John Bercow uses English, academically and astonishingly!
Exactly my thought! And of course to speculate the never ending salary day drama for MoPs.
I would love to see other videos on podcasts and books : ) Thank you for your TV series recommendations, I will definitely have a look at some of them!

Clean enunciation.
@@sadael6290 I'm also looking for English learning partner with whom i can practice, but my English is not good enough as the writer of the above comment has 😒
Cheers mate
Good luck
@@muhammadharis4813 yeah me to have this problem so if you want we can practice together give me your account on Instagram if u want??
I'd also recommend Peaky Blinders for the advanced ones - loads of Birmingham and Irish accents.
Ted Lasso! I think it’s a cool contemporary British show with different accents and an interesting plot and appealing characters. I love it
I recommend watching "Lucifer Morningstar"
Actually it's amazing 💕😍

For intermediate or advanced speakers I would definitely recommend the Outlander series. It covers various accents, Scottish mainly, English, American and also you can hear some of the Scottish Gaelic. It really is a masterpiece which takes you on a journey through the 18th century Scottish Highlands.
i don't think
Hi
I am Indian.
Can you talk to me.
Absolutely need a British friend. I'd listen to Scottish accent all day.
This is amazing and would love to have similar recommendations for Podcasts, Lucy.
fantastic idea!
Hi
For sitcom, my recommendation goes to Coupling. Except being THE best comedy ever, it's got excellent pronunciation by all characters and Sarah Alexander with the most beautiful accent.
There are also, fast paced action/comedy -Keen Eddie.
Good Omens -the best Doctor Who David Tennant in new quirky role.
And for pre-intermediate Midsomer Murders.
My favourite tv show is still Fawlty Towers. Sybill’s accent is absolutely beautiful.
When I hear British accent it's cute and I felt like kind of falling in love to someone speaking.😅
Me too -and American nerves me a lot 😊

I need clarification on this lol why would the partner leave the chat? So confused
I loved Vera, Endeavor, Call the midwife, etc. I don't catch every single word but in context I get to understand the show. Thank your Lucy.
