      Hey Miles i agree. he's been quoted as saying his situation is "hell on earth...like being dead." the only person he actually can recognise fully is his wife, and he's obviously over the moon whenever he sees her (for him it must feel like he hasn't seen her in forever, even when she's only in the next room.) i can imagine his wife and music are the only things he can really get any joy from. i'm glad he's got something to hold on to, at least

    When Link said "He's living in the moment", that really got me thinking about that phrase much more deeply. How does one live in the moment? Because there's no way you just don't think about the past or the future at any given time except if you're not capable of doing so.

    • @miggysalvosa6286
      @miggysalvosa6286 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IMO to live in the moment means to disregard any plans or worries you have, past or present, and do what makes you happy. although I don't like the idea of that

    • @Joaoc86
      @Joaoc86 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MinimiMax Living in the moment means you pay attention to what's happening right now.
      You don't loose your memories or forget plans you have for the future, you just shift your focus more to the present moment and stop worrying and ruminating so much over the past that is gone and doesn't exist anymore and the future that just is an illusion or a thought in our minds unlike the present which is were we always exist.

    • @EnnoMaffen
      @EnnoMaffen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MinimiMax Yeah I think that phrase and others like "Live each day like it's your last" are just meaningless. They're meant to sound philosophical and smart but they really are just as helpful of advice as "be happy". My answer: "Duh"

    • @zachcollins9687
      @zachcollins9687 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MinimiMax Humans don't really live in the moment, they live 8 milliseconds in the past. This is because it takes 8 milliseconds for our brains to process information.

    I saw a documentary about Clive in Psychology class a few years ago. I remember seeing his wife walk into the room and he would just burst into tears and a big smile and hug her like he hadn't seen her in centuries. One of the only things he remembered was that he loved his wife.

  • @PurpleKangaroo4
    @PurpleKangaroo4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I learned about Clive in philosophy class. we were discussing what makes someone the same over time. very interesting discussion, but I think the most fucked up thing about it is that he literally thinks he's dead. He kept a journal and wrote that he can't remember anything, and that the only conclusion he can come up with to explain it is that he must be dead. yet he can still play piano like he never had anything wrong with him.

    I studied Clive Wearing in my A level psychology, he's very interesting. The best thing about his case is he keeps a diary, and it's the same thing over and over; "Now I am awake" believing that the precious entry was written when he was not fully conscious, but in that present moment, he is. And it goes on and on, crossing out the previous entry claiming he wasn't awake before, but is now. He seems to not have anything unique in his mind to give him an identity until you sit him in front of a piano, and he will play it without fault, however he experiences seizures afterwards for a reason I can't remember!

  • @vaalea3
    @vaalea3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Memory isn't straight forward. Most amnesiacs retain conditioning responses even if they can't remember the conditioning situations. So, you could shock an amnesiac every time a bell rings, and Pavlov dogs-style, they would expect pain every time the bell rings, even if they have no memory of having every received a shock.
    There are also indications that some amnesiacs retain certain aspects of their forgotten memories, and there is also spontaneous recovery of memory loss, which can be total or partial.
    There are also people who are blind (because the area of the brain responsible for processing visual stimulus is damaged) who can navigate through an obstacle course, even though they can't see anything.
    Lesson: Brains are weird and amazing

    Clive Wearing was one of my psychology case studies to remember! It's really sad, but so interesting how the brain works. The part of his brain which remembered skills was still intact - which is why he could still play the piano. But the part that held memories both short and long term was damaged, so he couldn't remember any of his life past and present - apart from up to 30 seconds.

    As a psychology minor I have studied Clive. There are a lot of videos out about him.
    So basically there are two types of remembering that a person has. One is implicit memory which is "how to" memory and this is like how to ride a bike and in Clive Wearing's case play piano. Then there is explicit memory which is split into two types in itself: facts and personal events. Clive lost pretty much all of his explicit memory. There is a video of his wife coming through his front door and he says "there she is!" and gets up and hugs and kisses her and it is really sweet. But it also shows a conversation that she has with him and he forgets what they are talking about mid-sentence which is the interview that Rhett was taking about. It is really interesting. I would definitely recommend looking into it if you are interested in this stuff :)

    I remember watching a documentary about a man (I think he was British) who woke up in a train in another country who completely forgot who he was. One detail about his story that was fascinating was when he experienced snowfall, it was new to him. And a sad part was he wanted to remember his mother, who I believe passed away a long time before the amnesia.

    I heard a special all about Clive on NPR a couple years ago and it was super interesting listening to him talk about how his wife and music have been his only lifelines when dealing with this. He said that when he hears an orchestral piece it's like a whole new world opens up and he can remember, but once the piece is over, it's gone.

    Can someone explain to me what this means? I know it's not amnesia, but it is something I don't remember.
    So there was one morning when I walked out of my room and my dad said to me, "Hey, are you feeling any better?" I asked what he was talking about and he said, "You know, how you woke up screaming last night and your mom had to run to your room and make sure you were okay?" I had no idea what he was talking about. This was when I was in middle school. To this day I still don't remember anything about it.
    It's not like it's haunting me or anything. I was just wondering if anyone could help me understand it better.

    Clive remembers his wife and he remembers how to play the piano. I don't remember the article but it's so interesting. He keeps a journal and writes "I am awake" everyday and when he wakes up and opens up the journal he crossed out everything he previously wrote.

    I think having a clone to do work would end up like that Naruto episode when Naruto made clones to do his homework but every single one was equally as lazy and he ended up with 20 slacking clones.

    I think Clive can still work as a musicologist because other parts of the brain are concerned with listening and playing music. I think it's also why even Alzheimer patients can remember music even if they've forgotten the rest. Here's some more information: www.livescience.com/19765-music-alzheimers-patients-memory.html
    The relationship of the brain and music is pretty interesting, I recommend reading more into it. One book I'd recommend is Musicaphilla: Tales of Music and The Brain by Oliver Sacks.

    You forgot the movie with Nicole Kidman and Collin Firth Before you go to sleep. Great movie about A woman wakes up every day, remembering nothing as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. One day, new terrifying truths emerge that force her to question everyone around her. Kinda like Michelle but so much more scary.
