Absolutely spot on Vince. I only shoot Springers, and have done for 60 odd years. I started to do HFT on Sticks a few years ago - easier on my body and joints - but instead of resting my rifle in the support on top of the sticks, I rest my hand, and shoot with my gloved hand open, resting the the rifle - generally an HW98 - in my open palm. Guess what....it works :) I hope you feel better shortly. Keep up the great work, and all my best wishes for a very Happy & Healthy New Year
Hi Vince! Yes that was a funny tale 😄Four days ago an airgun "expert" in south Africa was doing a review on a Gamo Speedster 10X IGT Gen 2 and had the gun resting in a Caldwell Lead Sled pod. The groups where terrible and he thought himself it where very nice groups. In an earlier comment some months ago i told him to use a sandbag and the artillery hold but the expert knew better. There are also people who don't want to learn or have problems accepting criticism 😵💫 Cheers!
It is surprising how many make this mistake, 6 days ago a guy does a video on Remington Pest Controller and really pulls down the rifle, whilst using a metal V wedged rest bolted to his table. Crazy.
I agree about not being in a hurry to strip a new spring gun down. Unless you've bought it specifically as a project and insist on spending £££s to have it tuned /customised to perfection (nothing wrong with that), it's probably best to put at least a tin of pellets through. I had an HW80K which when new had horrible spring buzz but within 1/2 a tin of pellets the noise went away and it continued to smooth out. The grease inside needs a chance to migrate and the internals bed in together. Beyond pulling some patches through the barrel of a new gun and checking the stock screws are tight it may be a good idea to be patient and simply practice more.
I watched a guy this week who bought a new 95 and wasn’t happy with the power it was putting out so he took it to bits and cleaned it up dropped another washer in it etc and was a bit cock happy that it was putting out 11.9 ft lb, A brand new gun sold with three year warranty, I can see that gun creeping up over 12 and not just that he’s no doubt now lost his warranty on his gun. I think in time the gun would have bedded in anyway and if he was not happy with the ft lb take it back to the dealer and get it checked and if not performing as advertised let them sort it.
I think it was myself that mentioned my beautiful HW98 on the last video. That guy who reviewed the 98 sounds like a complete whopper. I have shot springers for over 35 yrs and that 98 is the best I've had hands down. Personal choice
Hiya Vince, I'm convinced its down to experience, most seasoned shooters will understand not to rest a springer on hard surface, like s fence post. I have around 20 Springers all HWs or AA, i can shoot a springer off my sand bag almost as accurately any of my PCPs at 25 yards definitely, Sand bag is not hard like a fence post ot table top, i find as long as the hold is consistent then the accuracy is i can get on my setup is accurate as. My neighbour is 72 years old and a fantastic shot, he always rest gun in his open hand, he says he can't hit shit the way i shoot however like he says i bloody works well for me. I imagine there will be others comments say they have great results i imagine? You are absolutely right though in practice its best to get used to resting on hand especially for those who don't seem to get anywhere 👍👍
@@24745037 all very fair points my friend. I feel this could open up another can of worms so to speak. Now alot of my shooting is field work out hunting. In general I'm of the view that standards in general marksmanship are slipping, I see it all the time when coaching. There's a world of difference being able to shoot accurately off a bench and freestanding etc ...just food for thought...👍👍👍👍
Hi Vin , just to add a slightly different perspective , i used to think a springer had to be held with the supporting hand like the age old advice. However after watching ‘ Airgun exploration and advancement channel ‘ ( check it out ) it appears to make no difference. The guy on these video’s is getting tiny groups at 50 yards with a hw97 / hw35 /Tx200 by shooting off a bag centre-fire style !
Update to my reply buddy. Yes I've watched his channel, definitely he is a fine shot but I'll stick to my guns and say there is a difference between a rested rifle and a held rifle supported. I can't find his video he did where he actually found that out himself 😉
Hi Vin. Paul from SA again. Loved this video. Newbie errors for some poor guy. Funny thing, the holds/rests. It really depends on the rifle and the pellet selection. My Gamo CFX Royal with an IGT ram and trigger job in 5,5 mm shoots a 16,36 Grain Brazilian cheaper (Indubrac Rifle brand) pellet into 7mm for 10 shots at 20 meters, off an X bag with a rice filled army sock at the rear. But I put no pressure at all on the butt. Basically balance it and squeeze of the shot, just keep my off hand on the stock gently to prevent torque. Offhand standing silhouettes, normal hold, no problem. My HW97s don't seem to care, but they are heavy. Just don't muscle too much off a bag. Gamo Speedster in 5,5 mm, that wants artillery palm of the hand moderate butt pressure, even better of the back of my hand. Wife's Norica Spider GRS in .177, an 18 foot pounds thumper, wants to be muscled, so real hard in the shoulder, and artillery hold. The more time you spend with the rifle and the more stuff you try, the better it gets. Cheers boet.
Very amusing vin, reminds me when i had an HW80 for the first time many decades ago, I absolutely loved it, thought it was the b o l o x but I couldn't hit a thing , was only when went to my local shooting club that I found out how wrong I was using it, after a little coaching , BINGO, Plus all the bedding in and pellet testing of course, just like a melon I sold when PCP stuff was more available to me £, to this day I regret selling it, I now have the latest version of it and Iove it, I also have the 98, they all have different characteristics in my humble opinion. Cheers again vin keep em coming.
I shoot my 98 off a Primos Trigger Stick in a deck chair (bone idle or what), it comes with a rubbery V which didn't work so I covered it with the soft pipe lagging and then some chamois cloth, it's a tack driver with many types of pellets but I use H+N FTT. All the other things like trigger use and shoulder pressure still apply. Tomorrow, Sunday I will be using it with a TBT short stroker in and testing my Cometa 400 with a Welsh Willy kit fitted. Update, don't like the short stroker, seems to have made the 98 more hold sensitive. The Cometa is fantastic with the Welsh Willy kit fitted, not pellet fussy, liked FTT and JSBs but a slight preference for Superdomes.

Hi Vin, many years ago when I had the Mercury and the HW35 (both in .22) I used to squirt "Triflon" into the cylinder via the transfer port, which puts a very thin coating of "Teflon" on the cylinder wall, when it's dried out, making the Piston travel a lot faster, thus more fps and Ft/Lb's.
