1980 Williams FIREPOWER pinball machine

  • Hello everyone! Today we have a 1980 Williams Firepower pinball machine in action for your viewing pleasure. Two complete games are played in this video because I couldn't quite get multiball started in the first game. Of course, as soon as I achieved multiball in the second game, I immediately lost every ball.
    This machine is one of the more iconic classics of the early solid-state era. Designed by Steve Ritchie, it's the first solid state machine to feature multiball and the first with the lane-change feature.
    The very Star Wars-esque artwork, combined with the awesome speech and cool, fast rules make this game spectacular. The spinner shot to the saucer at the top of the playfield to start multiball is the best shot in pinball, as far as I'm concerned.
    Rules are basic, of course, but still more involved that your average electromechanical game. Hitting the six stationary targets in the centre of the playfield lights two of the saucers for lock. Hitting the targets a second time lights the third saucer for lock. Locking all three balls in the saucers starts multiball. Spotting the four lanes at the top (which can be changed on-the-fly via the right flipper button) lights the FIRE insert and hitting the three right side stationary targets lights the POWER insert. Completing FIRE also builds the bonus multiplier. Once multiball has been started, restarting it requires completion of the six stationary targets again three times (instead of two) and then the player has to again lock all three balls.

    What an awesome machine my dad used to have this in his basement and he sold it and wow today I want it back in our game room. And they made around 20,000 so they are not hard to find online. In my top 50 for sure😀

      The ruleset is simple and it’s fairly easy to do well on this M/C. On of the reasons I love it so. ❤️ ❣️

    I prefer Firepower II as it's easier to get multi-ball. Just lock one ball and hit the release target. I also prefer the Firepower II artwork. It's more rare with only 3,400 made.

    My dad bought this pinball machine new in 1981. I grew up with it. Firepower and Medieval Madness are my two favorite machines. Williams made the best pinball machines. Too bad they left the pinball biz in 1999...

      If you can’t actually own the real thing for whatever reason Pinball Hall of Fame Williams & Gottlieb Collections for the Wii are fantastic simulations. Wiimote is the left flipper, nunchuck is the right flipper and nudging the M/C is done by motion sensing. It feels and works wonderfully. 👍🏼 🥚 🎱

    A simple yet fun Williams M/C from the early 80’s . One of my favourites. Get Pinball Hall of Fame Williams Collection for the Wii if you can’t own a real pinball M/C. Firepower is one of the great games included on the disc. Pinball Hall of Fame Gottlieb Collection for the Wii is pretty good too. 🥚 👁 ⚾️

    It's an all-time classic, but it's also a bitch to play as you saw. I have this game on mobile app Pinball Arcade, and like the guy in the video I have trouble keeping multiball play intact. A lot of fun though

    Where's the drop targets?

    • @londonpinball
      @londonpinball  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only prototype Firepowers (or games that have been modified to accommodate them) have drop targets

    • @bhs6252
      @bhs6252 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@londonpinball Why is that?

    • @londonpinball
      @londonpinball  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bhs6252 Well, according to the designer: "The first 10 games we built had 2 3-banks of drops in place of the standups. They were so crappy that they were making the game unreliable, so we went with the standups for production. It was a smart move. If we had good drop targets it would have sold 20,000, but it wasn't working long enough to earn anything with the bad drops....".
      This info can be found here: www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=856
      I'm not sure what the issue was with the drop targets. Stellar Wars and Time Warp (for example) use the same type of drop targets in a similar spot to Firepower and those games were fine.

    Sounds like defender and robotron!

    • @londonpinball
      @londonpinball  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Firepower was released before both of those games. And the sounds and software for Firepower were developed by Eugene Jarvis, who was instrumental in the programming and development of Robotron and Defender, which accounts for the similarities.

      @@londonpinball I own a Robotron and I believe it has the same sound board that's used in this pin and later in system 7 games.

    I used to love playing this awesome Williams Pinball back in the day when it was brand new, in a arcade at Clacton-on-Sea just outside of what used to be the Butlins Holiday Camp.
