  • Hi and welcome to the channel
    Disgusted at the price of roof racks for sale out there I decided to make my own and save a small fortune using the very versatile Uni-strut that's available from all electrical and engineering wholesalers
    This video demonstrates how easy it is to install the Uni-strut and how I sealed it, I will also show you the easiest and quickest way to remove the manufactures fixing point caps.

    Your doing a great job with this mate! I know I’m late to the party and the vans done now but just a tip for future vids… the title of the videos.. if you use something like ‘Self build Crafter campervan roof rack’ rather than just ‘roof rack episode 3’ for example the TH-cam algorithm will work better and you’ll get loads more views!!
    I’m amazed your channel hasn’t got far more subs! Your vids are good and quality of the van is great👍🏼
    Just trying to help you out mate not trying to tell you what to do😊

    Get on mate just started watching the conversion and learning a lot can I just ask what flooring you use and how it was fixed to the factory floor or is there a video I've not got to yet cheers

    • @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife

      I'm not sure if I made a video on that 🤔
      We used normal vinyl flooring nice to walk on than the industrial stuff but not as hard wearing

    Hi Sam, I've only just found your channel and have just started doing my own Sprinter conversion and I have already found your content really helpful so thank you. Good job with the roof rail I am going to be doing the same, is there a reason why you didn't go for the lower profile Unistrut? Cheers

    • @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife
      @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there glad you like the channel the reason for choosing the 41 x 41 strut was I wanted to fit an awning later the shallow strut would be lower than top of the gutter it sits in and the mounting plates would rub on the body work causing issues at a later date 👍

    What is the cleaning fluid that you use to clean the roof? Roof rails look proper good, and U saved loads!

    Sam. I’m about to do this. I’ve been inspired and just brought a 15 plate crafter.
    1,A few questions. 1, did you buy 6m Uni strut and cut it down or use a few 3ms joined ?
    2, the mastic tape. Did you cut this away where the roof panels lap over in the channel ?
    3, did you support the bolts inside with another section of unit strut or just washers? Square plate washers perhaps ?

    • @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife
      @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi I used 3 mtr lengths but in hindsight I should have used longer ones and cut them down, I did cut away the mastic at the panel joints so it didn't put undue pressure on the panel joints, as for securing the uni strut I just used M8 bolts nylock nuts and M8 penny washers
      I drove around for a couple of week with everything exposed on the inside of the van so I could check for leaks

    ou chose nuts and bolts over rib nuts, any reason ? Also the uni-strut you used didn’t have the many slots in the base for fixing. Are these lengths cheaper?

    • @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife
      @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Riv nuts can work loose over time so I used bolts, large washers and ny-lock nuts to prevent this from occurring
      water will enter this area and can pool in the slot of the slotted uni-strut so we used un-slotted to act like a gutter to take the water away both area around the same price

    Hi mate, done to perfection. Can I ask how did you know where to drill the holes in the bottom of the uni strut? And why did you not buy the uni strut with the slots in the bottom. I bet there is a reason, lol. Cheers mate

    • @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife
      @TheCraftyBlindersvanlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi sorry for the delay in responding
      I measured the distance between the holes and marked the strut to suit, I chose not use the slotted strut as water will get into the strut, I wanted it to act like a gutter and allow the water to run right out unobstructed
      hope this helps

      @@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife I have just bought the slotted stuff as I thought it would be lighter, but I like your thinking using it as a gutter. What did you use on the other ends of the bolts? Nylon nuts / washers etc?

    How does your van travel with solar panels on, as in wind noise. Would you consider a fabricated wind deflector in front just in case. Cheers Stew

      Have you considered using shallow slotted unistrut as this is a little bit more flexible than 41mm x 41mm standard strut👍
