Thank you for another fascinating episode Ben. This was a particularly enjoyable one. I have this humorous vision of greys from Zeta Reticula flying overhead singing a merry chorus. Still, I've been reading about these incidents for years and have always been intrigued. Before I go I have a subject suggestion for you. The disappearance of Alfred Loewenstein.
Good podcast. I'm open-minded about whether there was a real airship or not. I think it's possible that some of the early stories have a basis in fact. A book worth reading is "The Great Airship of 1897" by J Allan Danelek. He makes what I think is a good case that someone might have been experimenting with an airship of relatively advanced design at that time. The basic technology was already there, it just wasn't quite good enough to make a practical vehicle yet - but it wasn't far off. People had been flying experimental airships since the 1860s, the main thing that was lacking was an engine that was both powerful enough to drive an airship at a decent speed and lightweight enough to get off the ground. So if you imagine a rich guy with a dream - like a 19th Century Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk type - employing a talented engineer to work on the problem, they might have got some interesting results. As to why this hypothetical project was never made public, there are a couple of possibilities. The first is the airship being destroyed in an accident, probably killing the crew. This is certainly a believable possibility, seeing as we're talking about an experimental aircraft operating right out on the edge of what was possible at the time. If the chief engineer was on the crew, which seems likely, that would have crippled the whole project. You can then imagine the money man shutting the project down and suppressing all evidence for fear of lawsuits and bad publicity. The other scenario I can think of is that after carrying out a series of test flights, it was decided that the airship's performance just wasn't good enough to be commercially viable - in which case it seems likely that the money man would pay off everyone involved, destroy the prototype airship and file away or destroy any records. After all, there'd be no profit in publicising a failed venture, especially if Mr Moneybags had shareholders to answer to. Of course we'll probably never know for sure, unless one day someone going through an old storehouse of company records stumbles across blueprints for an airship from the late 1890s.
So I'm a patron and a long listener of the podcast for nearly 2 years now. Kinda miffed that I literally type in 'dark history' in the TH-cam search bar and have to scroll way down to find you. Mr Cutmore I really need to suggest you to more people!
First time I heard of you. Going to try your show and I'll let you know what I think after I listened to it. I happen to love the flight club story from 1890s so hope it's a good podcast. Thanks
Hey great podcast absolutely wonderful and I'm half way through. Most do a lot of chatting and very little with the topic or story. That was not the case here I honestly can't praise this one enough. Personally I have to say thank you for such a professional job. The detail and research was beyond what I know and that's so rare to find. Most people use podcasts as a chance to spend an hour reading what anyone can on the net then recording themselves talk about themselves and make dumb jokes for 30 to 45 min with maybe 15 to 20 min on the actual topic. This one wasn't like that at all. It's simply the best and most professional podcast I have ever listened to.
It was Captain Nemo!!!! I think he had flown from Mysterious island to reconnoiter the USA in preparation for the unleashing his WMDs, or maybe it was the military testing the stealth characteristics of a 1st Gen airship, or it was aliens that didn’t have the most technologically advanced spacecraft, or maybe it was time travellers, Doc Brown turned a Delorean and a steam train into time machine’s, so why not an airship, the arguments were Marty and Doc Brown trying to figure out how to get Back To The Future, Jules and Verne had to be at school next day, and Clara was at home with their dinner in the oven, and would be very angry if they were not back in TIME. An excellent episode, thanks for all your hard work doing research and recording/broadcasting this strange but very interesting story 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
Hahahah, it’s no homunculus, but for the children’s sake maybe it was for the best. I got to say, that last episode spawned quite the interesting conversation of the birds, bees, and..... oxen? We’re looking forward to this one!
I have studied this subject for years to varying degrees. Short of someone finding old invoices for a purchase/shipment of an incredibly large order of silk and shellac to build an obvious envelope or someone finding old plans/schematics for an obvious dirigible there’s nothing to see or find that represents “evidence “ of there being any truth to it all? Just old newspaper accounts and historic references. What’s surprising is the fact that the names mentioned involved with the reported airships are collaborated in other texts that the authors would have had no idea of each other’s writings….eg, the repeated reports of a individual named “Wilson, Hiram Wilson”, etc. Interesting!
In spite of being subscribed with the "all" Notifications icon active; I have not been receiving notifications of your new videos. This has been happening, or not happening in this case since December 2020. I thought that you were just moving your presence off to the paid-for platforms. The same has been happening with the "Reading the Past" Chanel and I mentioned this in a comment to Kat yesterday. I received notification on the newest "Reading the Past" video this morning.
@@cutekanjii I agree. Don't want to hear his bias when the research itself is actually good (guardian reader and clues in other podcasts tells me he's a cringe lefty "I fucking love 'science'" and "aren't white people terrible" type)
You struggling not to laugh is hilarious. But these "pre alien UFOs" are fascinating. There was a similar flap in 30s Scandinavia, with giant, presumably soviet planes seen in bad weather in the artic.
I thought it interesting that the earlier stories seemed to believe there was amazing modern technology being tested and later versions pushed the extraterrestrial story. Quite the opposite of recent thought development. My theory is there were a whole of of attention seekers.
So glad I discovered your channel! I am so enjoying it. Listening as I go to sleep at night because your voice is so soothing! Thank you!

Given that literal airships were bombing London less than 20 years later I find it highly possible
Yay, a new episode! Love this one and can‘t wait for the next one! 💖😄
Alright ... Been waiting for a new Dark Histories . Thank you 💌🍀🍀🍀

I grew up right between Sacramento and Oroville, but have never heard this story before. Thank you for putting this together, Ben.
🤜💥🤛

I almost made one, thought I saw it blink anyways
So long as it didn’t sneeze on you I’d say you came out on top.

Great stuff.
I love it when you try to keep your composure when you get to the part of reading clearly ridiculous bull#^$ :)

Very interesting bit of history. Fascinating example of early media hype / manipulation, and the various interesting ways Individuals relate to it.
Ben certainly has a surplus of internet groupies 😆
Hi
I like the chat at the end more than the story!
I don't

I wonder if this is the origin of the airships of the final fantasy series 🤔🧐
No doubt with all the backyard inventors at the time.
Late 19th century Bizarre history!
Edison Zeppelin Wells & Verne in cahoots...?
Woo hoo!! I'm first. Love you Ben xx
Think the 'beings' were asthmatic!

Amazing how contemporary this sounds, with the cover-ups, Chinese lanterns and cattle mutilation. 👽
