    One of the reasons I enjoy your videos is I share your enjoyment of trying things I've never done before. There always has to be a first time, and a am always excited to learn a new skill by trying it out.( after learning lots of interesting tips!)

    Your marble pot came out really nicely! The holes look perfect. I'm going to be holding my breath when you work on tapering the sides. I'd be so afraid of cracking it, or taking too much off. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

    Holes looks great Nigel!👍
    A few of my trees died this winter. Utah's weather very unstable, we have warm days cold nights, warm weeks then plants start to bud, wham we get hit with more snow. Then it will happen again, plants would bud out and you think winter is completely done and over with and one last winter storm that just about kills everything and if that doesn't the heavy down pressure winds will come shortly after. All of this dramatic weather brings out the best features in our native trees.
    I can't wait for my favorite nursery to open up in may so I can purchase some unique native specimens.

    Great job on drilling those holes. I've drilled many holes into stone and cement pots, I find using a hand drill with water works the best. The slower you go through the last section of the hole the smoother the edges will be. I put almost no pressure when I'm at the last 1/4 of the hole or so. Just steady the weight of the drill and let it pass rite through.

    I was thinking maybe you could carve the plugs to look like ancient ruined pillars or something to use in one of your bonsai? I love it all, and I can't wait to see you try your hand at masonry for real! You're a brave man Nigel!
    Thanks so much for another excellent video!

      That's a really great idea, Lisa! One could carve grooves (flutes?) in them, as if they were once mighty columns very long ago.

    Hi, you could use those marble plugs as feet on two marble bowls from the thrift shop. Use 3 plugs per pot and using one plug from the bowl would give you nice recycle pots.

    Nigel, I`d use bit with the guide centerbit inside the circle - so it wont wiggle aside and you can hold it vertically from the start.

    I wonder. With all those cuttings from pruning, how many would root? In sand or bonsai mix and leave in pot in the cold and see in the spring/summer for growth. Would be a nice little experiment.

    @growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I bet you can use the plugs as a marker with a date as to when you repotted a tree. It would be almost like a stone in the pot. Just a thought.

    Enjoyed watching your work on the lovely marble pot. Those seedlings will someday become beautiful bonsai under your care. I've got the spring fever as well.....just placed an order for some flower seeds. Might have been caused by our recent cold snap with temps down to the mid-70 F. LOL

      @@TheBonsaiZone Yes, it will be harder to produce uniform lines. But is it really necessary? Perhaps supports underneath the pot will allow for air and water flow.

    Thank you Nigel!! You always know how to make me feel better!😊 I only have one that budded out. The soil stays firm cold, so lightly frozen. It must have super powers.... Haha! Your marble pot is gorgeous! Instead of carving off the whole bottom to make the feet more pronounced, would painting that angled part between the feet black have the same effect?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would, but I need the pot raised so the water will flow out the drainage holes. I might try the angle grinder, it will be very dusty!

    All year you've been talking about trees you had on the bench last year that were pruned by the rabbits. Are you sure it wasn't squirrels. I haven't seen too many rabbits that were able to climb. Squirrels however are good climbers and they love to nibble on twigs particularly in the winter when everything else is covered in snow.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was from my low bench, the rabbits stand on their back legs and eat the trees, they can actually reach the second level too!

    • @TheBonsaiZone

  • @jackthefarmer08

    I think the marble pot looks really nice at the moment and it'll be really risky to try to taper it, so if I were you I would leave it intact. The final decision is yours, of course.

      The cutting direction is irrelevant with that type of saw.

  • @nolesfan8900
    @nolesfan8900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I fear that you had the drill turning in reverse. If so it likely slowed down the aggressiveness of the cut. Might be for the best.....? Either way, it didn’t look like you had to work too hard to penetrate. Perhaps a core bit for stone doesn’t have directional teeth. Michelangelo had nothing n you.
