    I'm so sad about Dr Michael Mosley. Such a lovely man. Taught us about gut bacteria way before anyone else. I feel heart broken atm 😥💔

    Agree with this concept.
    Over 12 years ago l had a haed concussion which totally changed my life and health.
    All the doctors and specialists scoffed when l said that l noticed my brain and body reacted not long after eating. None would ever except the concept when l advocated the brain gut connection at all.
    Over 2 years , was diagnosed with various conditions - eyesight deteriatuon, hypothyroid, kidney damage, cysts and leisons on my liver, pancreatitis, etc, disbiosis, anemia, Ecoli, etc. Eventually lung cancer.
    Always ate and drank very healthy since a child - we rarely ate anything that was canned or in plastic but occsionall in glass. Always freah fruit and veg and a huge variety .
    So l just took it all a step further..
    Ate organic items whenever l could - whether coffee (drink it black with a bit of organic honey), very dark chocolate, certain nuts. Pealed all fruit and vegetables (due to pesticides), stopped eating rice, potatoes, corn, pasta, grains, cereals, ( bread , pasta etc, were never part of my diet when l was a kid so all easy for me to omit), plus l always used olive oil.
    Ate organic, grassfed Aberdeen Angus beef, wild boar, deer, rabbit, eggs, freshwater prawns , fish - 4 times a week and not huge amounts either. Only eat organic cheeses from ewes, sheep and goats because not intensively farmed animals.
    Drink alcohol - wine, cocktails, cider but only on special occasions or dining out . This is a luxury l kept because l had a connection to wineries 😊
    Most importantly - no matter at what time l finished eating, l would leave a minimum of 12 hours before l ate again and once every week l did a Fast for a minimum of 30 - 43 hours.
    Fasting definitely was pivotal.
    Got a dog to make sure l walked a minimum of 1 hour per day - as l never was a fitness / gym person but do like to ski, river raft , kund of stuff .
    Also, enrolled in variety of short study classes - art history , cartooning, wine tasting 😅 etc.
    I was given a really crap diagnosis but still surviving and my health has greatly improved with cancer gone into remission.
    Hope this info can help somebody else...

    I am not keen on eating later in the day. I prefer to sleep quite early. This helps me sleep better and wake early with a clear head and ready for the day.

    Can I mention that I find this whole good bacteria image very useful for motivation? I picture how my bean salad with herbs and spices feeds cute little creatures, and how a pizza would crush them. Then I imagine gunky slimy things loving the pizza. I know it's just in my head, and "good" microbes are objectively no cuter than "bad" ones, but the image helps. It's like the difference between attracting butterflies and songbirds to my small city centre back yard, rather than rats and bottle flies.

      I love wholesome food, I think something like a pizza can be made pretty healthy to have as a different treat or to join others, they can have a reasonably healthy one, and you can do your even healthier one . Eg a high fiber toast , covered with some good quality cheese , beef or cherry tomatoes , basil, spinach , red bell pepper , mushroom, onions and herbs. Is a nice point of difference from a lovely bean salad. Ie you want to have as little restriction your diet as possible, have social options for friends.
      You have a great liver, kidney etc - eating that toast pizza once a month will have no effect on your lifespan, but increase your happiness not to be too controlling and limiting. I would hate a carnivore diet , ignoring moral arguments , it's just so horrible as is a self imposed prison sentence, afraid to travel - as can't eat my oh so important diet , or can't do my gym work .
      Great thing is Mediterranean diet allows so much variation to personalise.
      All the people who have lived to over 100 have eaten "unhealthy" food , no one has lived to 120 years old.
      Many people live to 90 plus, even in blue zones only 1 in 10000 get to 100.
      So don't think somehow having a perfect diet will is going to magically give you extra years of life over a 95% perfect and some fun stuff.
      Exercise cardio , strength training and a reasonable diet that ensures a good gut biome will do most of the heavy lifting and get you great healthspan.
      Given that think best to get to healthy diet and then find solutions to have your treats after eg have that blueberry high fiber muffin after walking 2 hours in the hills - your muscles will soak up the extra sugar in no time , Plus you your added sugar in the muffin was just mashed banana or apple puree

      @@Petunia-fl9lu Stuff made in factories designed to last ages in plastic bags to stop it drying out without going mouldy is weird. It does break down in the compost heap, but noticeably slower than real bread scraps as long as they're kept damp.

    If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life

    I would like to know more about the roles our intrinsic hormones play in our gut and our immunity barrier. (They are finding our hormones necessary in every organ system of our body). There’s not enough research and it seems like as men AND women are reaching a “certain age” we are all having the same GUT issues. This is the time of life we are losing certain hormones that kept us “young”.

      Yes subject is huge. But guess healthy foods and sensible exercise movement throughout entire day good for everyone whatever age or gender. I think interval eating good or to put it another way what our grandparents did. They ate fresh foods usually home cooked but stopped eating around 7 pm each evening maybe drinking a milky drink around that time and then watched tv for few hours or read a book played a game. We have moved into a silicon age of 24/7 foods usually hyper processed and then wonder why we may on occasion have problems sleeping or have medical conditions our grandparents never had. Plus the car. My nanny walked everywhere or got bus/ train she never owned a car she lived to 98

      @@lisadefries6718 not as simple as that. Some women who are now in our later years were mistreated and some still are regarding menopause. Many of us had total hysterectomies and were left to age immediately because they were afraid to replace our hormones due to a bad study in the early 2000’s. No amount of exercise or healthy eating helps this. Many Hormones are essential to our functioning organs and not just estrogen!

    Is inflammation always bad? Doesn’t it sometimes occur to fight harmful bacteria, viruses etc.
    Although I do agree that giving your body a long rest between starting eating a good cleaner idea gives time for body to have a natural uninterrupted cycle of digestion and benefit from healthy foods. I am restarting a healthy regime of 10000 steps per day ( yes I know an invented number but works) and a 9 hour eating window of healthful foods and 15 hours rest for my body where I just consume black coffee and water

      Working that shift was awful to my gut. Sleep schedule was always changing.

      shift work is a terrible risk for cancer - to do with the altered biorhythms. it's hard I know my husband does it three times a week and he hates it

    I wish when people, scientists especially, talk about fat and the negative effects of fat, they should make it clear, in the same sentence, which types of fat they are talking about, which causes spikes and inflammation.
    Are we talking about a fatty stake here? Or are we talking about canola oil-fat, hydrogenated fat and the like?
    Evidence is already out that saturated anima (red meat)l fat is not nearly as bad as we thought up until recently.

    But there are other professors who conduct research and who have very different opinions (such as Dr. Ben Bikman). As a layman, I find this so so so confusing... what he says just sounds so plausible. What should I do with this now?
