If you rock the bit, you risk increasing the diameter of your hole. If you're using a flush mount jack plate it won't fit properly. Best to set up a jig and use a drill press to make it straight and true.

Came here to say the same, it’s pretty bad advice if you’re going to mount something like an electro socket Jack . It’ll just look messy

I just watched a video using a special bit to drill that kind of Jack holes , where can I buy one of those ?

@@Fili2009ableI’ve always used a forestner bit found at any hardware store. Size it according to the jack needs.

I been in wood working over 45 years the whole rocking back and forth is not at all necessary.

What was the reason to drill through? 25-30 mm would be more than enough to place jack in there. The wire channel could be done by regular 6-8 mm drill bit. And that tear out.....

The thing with Fenders is they use a plate which is secured in the hole and the jack socket needs to be fed from the inside to push through it. Hence why they tend to cut completely into the cavity.

Great info! The use of a Forstner bit allows you to control drilling and not need the drill press.

How not to drill a straight hole

  • @mallrat11
    @mallrat11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

if you use a sharp self feeding bit there should be no need to 'rock it'. i use self feed bits all the time in my day job and the only time there is a need to do that is if the bit has gone to shit, or the screw in it is dull.

mallrat11 just what i thought. If it smokes then the guy is using dull bits. No need for rocking with real sharp ones. It messes up the diameter of the hole. Actually it is the purpose of forstner bits to drill very straight downwards.

I was checking out his drill bits on the table in the background thinking why not use Colt drill bits... you would have 0 break out if you drill the hole before routing the electronic pocket...

Could you post video on enlarging a barrel jack hole to fit an Electro jack plate on a painted body? Thanks.

Forster bits work great so do the flat wood drilling bits. If you try a regular twist drill bit, you will hear the crack first then see it. Not pretty. I wish there were many more of these videos by qualified people.

This is the worst advice and technique I've ever seen in my life. A forstner bit for the jack? No. As others have said, rocking the bit is a bad idea and, with a proper bit, unnecessary.

For an angle of reference, it may be done with 1 person via carpenter tape, and clamping the guitar flat to the table. Though, it would change how you handle the dril

No wonder American guitars cost $2k and Chinese guitars cost $99.
America has 10 American paid workers to drill 1 hole. Chinese have 1 10 yr old kid. 🤣

An old carpenter's trick is to use bee's wax (Burt's Bees Lip Balm) for drilling, or screwing into hardwoods helps with the friction and prevents splinters. Back in the day of hammers and nails, that was why nails were kept in the mouth for trimming/framing, not just for ease of access, but to help the nail penetrate dry wood smoothly. But for precision work, and drawers that just had friction slides (wood on wood), it got a coat of wax as well. You can even keep a candle burning and dip into it, but I find that a tube of lip balm works better, is easier to keep around, and if you run out or lose it, you can get another one almost anywhere. (BTW, I am an old retired carpenter/mason/builder that learned from a few old carpenters myself.)

I never would have thought to run the drill from the cavity all the way through the pickup routes. But I knew that had to be a way.
I don't really think a drill press is needed for any of this because the holes are not going to be seen

    • @rosswheatley8329

I've actually preferred to go through the neck pocket to connect the two humbucker cavities.

I sure hope you're talking about a guitar which has an open Neck pickup cavity at the neck insertion end!
(As opposed to having to drill through the body to first get from the neck pocket to the neck pickup cavity!
Or maybe that would be another way this "teacher of the year" would consider an improvement to teach to his "just-got-out-of-jail" looking students!)

  • @xfup

Actually I was a little hesitant to try using the rocking motion. BUT when you follow this guys advice it is actually cleaner when you fully penetrate the wood once entering the control cavity.
