This was the best presentation on vanishing points and perspectives that I have ever seen. I took a painting class where he drew a barn in two minutes and thought we understand, not! Then I took another drawing class on line with the instructor did drawings in a virtual class, not. You're in depth explanations and drawings were fantastic! It's because you're a teacher drawing for a student's perspective. Not all artist can teach, which was my frustration and I am a retired teacher and could relate to your teaching style and explanations. Thank you so much! 🤗
Wow! You really made my day!! Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope to put up another video soon. I have been working on commissions and have had little time. Again, thank you.

Diane Wood's Art Lesson Channel👈 sincerely, Mrs Diane... You just don't know how you are impacting my career...it's a blessing to have you, teach with such CHARISMA...👍👍👍👑
First time watching & I so appreciate your teaching ability it makes aworld if difference. I am an Early Childhood Educator who thrives on clear explanations just like the "littles" do. Lol.
I’ve taught this same lesson to my students. When initially starting your house you drew the small vertical line to establish the height of the roof. Although you used a straightedge to draw it you basically freehanded it. You should have drawn a line from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the left side of your house. Now repeat the same step on the opposite side by drawing from top right corner to bottom left corner of the left side of your house. This establishes an “X” in the left side of your house. The center of the X is the center of the left side of the house. Now you can use that center point to draw a true perpendicular line. If your vertical lines are freehanded (even with a straightedge) your drawing will look off. The vertical lines in this drawing drove me crazy. All in all I thought you did a good job. You are brave to put your teaching skills out there.
If you are representing a house or room from a plan, the lines going to one vanishing point are those parallel with the X axis, and the lines going to the other vanishing point are parallel with the Y axis. You don't need to guess, just start with a plan view!
Such a good tutorial, thank you; I learned a lot. I was wondering if there's any way to know how far apart to put the paving stones as they fade into the distance?
Thank you for your kind words. As I am a fine artist and not an architect, and I am not versed in mechanical drawing, I just "eyeball" it. I know that the pavers appear smaller and closer together as they go into the distance, but since it isn't drawn to scale, I have no specific formula.
@@dianewoodsartlessonchannel2229 Thanks for your reply. That's fine. I have to say you have a wonderful way of teaching. I have been binge watching your videos. I am a beginner at watercolour painting but finding that it's very helpful to know how to draw. Wish you were my Art Teacher. Thanks again
I have a doubt on how did you find the center of the left face to find the top of the roof? If it´s just measuring the segment in perspective and divide it in two, i think it´s not the right way of doing it. You should make two diagonals on that face to find the center and bring the line up, shouldn´t you?
Don't know. Never tried the diagonals, but if it works, go for it! I always tell my students that if they find something that works, do it! Good luck to you.
I don't have a background in art, but I'm pretty sure the diagonal lines should not just be parallel with each other. If you keep making parallel diagonal lines across the page, you will get to the point where they line up with your vanishing point, to make a "horizontal" line in your image, and that has to be wrong. How do you use this technique to represent actual dimensions accurately? If you are drawing a view of your house design for a client, how do you ensure the drawing accurately portrays how tall, how wide, and how long the finished house will be?
Hello. Great questions, however, this is not meant to be a scale model or professional rendering. It is a basic lesson to introduce perspective to a beginner art class in high school. You might want to consult someone who does planning/rendering professionally to answer your questions. Thanks and good luck!
5:20 The two roof lines should *not* be parallel! They recede to a vanish point that is directly above the vanishing point on the horizon-in this example, where the roof line drawn at 4:34 would intersect the left edge of the page. I'm always surprised that so few people know this, especially those who purport to be teaching the correct way to draw in perspective.
You may have to use your visual judgment, also known as "eye-balling it." Compare lengths of lines on the house you are drawing, for example, a 2 story house will have longer vertical lines than a ranch house. You really need to LOOK at what you're drawing. Also, it gets easier to judge as you practice. Good luck!
Not quite sure what you are asking. The line first drawn is the horizon line, which is at your eye level. As for the vanishing points, they are, in this case, at each end of the horizon line. All lines that are not vertical, with the exception of a select few diagonals, end at the point. If you are asking how to tell to which vanishing point to draw the line, use your visual judgement. If you draw your line to a vanishing point and it doesn't look right, try the other one. Hope that helped.
No, you're not. There are 2 videos, parts 1 and 2. Learn the basics, then add your own stuff to make it orginal. For example, make the basic house taller and you have a 2 story. Just remember that the majority of lines are vertical or they go to the vanishing point. Good luck to you!!!!
