In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of www.iamalpham.com, teaches you 3 simple pattern matching tips to ensure all your patterns are matching. Matching and wearing multiple patterns in one outfit is easy to master once you understand the rules. This video shows you how to easily match different patterns in a single outfit.
Mixing and matching patterns is the goal of today's tutorial. When executed properly, an outfit is taken to the next level of awesomeness. But if done wrong, it looks awkward. Aaron Marino of alpha m. presents basic tips to keep in mind when matching multiple patterns.
    1. Limit pattern matching to two in an outfit. If you can handle two, limit yourself to three patterns.
    2. Patterns need to contrast in pattern size but the shape or pattern type doesn't matter. Alpha demonstrates. A common issue is pinstripe shirts and suits too close in pattern size.
    3. Patterns need to contrast in density. Alpha explains by equating to cities and land. Alpha's tie is New York, his shirt is Jersey City, and his jacket is the Poconos. If they were New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, it would be train wreck!
Alpha provides examples and makes commentary about the outfits. They all stick to the three rules. As long as you stick to these three rules, you will never make a matching mistake.

Totally mine blown on how simple you made this! It all makes so much sense to me know. It's all about the size a density. Thanks a lot!

Interesting, I tend to shy away from more than one pattern, I'll have to dip a toe into 2 and 3. I really like the examples at the end. It helped solidify my understanding. Thanks Alpha!

I just want to say thanks. This puts what I kind of already knew very succinctly. I always had trouble making patters work well for me so I always limited myself to just 1 pattern per outfit. With these rules I think I'll be able to branch out more. Thank you very much.

  • @stevepa999

According to Allan Flusser, (google him if you do not who he is) that rule only applies if the pattern is the same, ie stripes, checks etc. Applying two different patterns with the same density works better than with different densities. Unless the patterns are really dense. then your outfit gets really, really busy and does not work.

I keep it simple. Navy suit. Charcoal suit. Navy blazers. Solids. Shirts - solids or low density patterns. Ties - I bought 13, THIRTEEN of the same silk knit ties in solid colors. 14 if you include black, which is the absence of color. My shirts match or contrast with every suit or jacket I wear. The ties match or contrast with any shirt. KISS (you know what that means).
