The Final Battle - Anzac Hall by Denton Corker Marshall

  • Kevin Hui and Andrew Maynard made the trip to Canberra, Australia to add to the fight for the survival of 20 year old award winning Anzac Hall by Denton Corker Marshall. Potentially the last goodbye to this elegant and poetic piece of architecture at a difficult time when our Federal Government thinks that spending half a billion Australian dollars during a pandemic on demolishing this building and upgrading a war memorial is a good idea.

    Haven't had the argument for keeping Anzac Hall put so convincingly or succinctly in all I've read. HALF A BILLION. WTF.
    Fun fact: in the early Canberra plans the war memorial site was flagged as a casino.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, but 'casino' took on different meaning throughout the 20th Century. A casino was a social hub for citizens, not what casino means now.

    • @Archimarathon

      Also, see the proposed in the video link in description.

    • @WelcomeToSteph
      @WelcomeToSteph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Archimarathon sure, I still find the contrast amusing. I imagine a casino would have been a vibrant gathering place in comparison to the (rightly) sombre war memorial.
      And yes, couldn't agree more that there's plenty of space to expand the exhibition and storage areas without demolishing such a young and poetic building!

      @@Archimarathon oh God that music was cheesy. And the sound effects at the beginning could be rather triggering for veterans with PTSD who I imagine would keep an eye on this development. Finally, that comments have been turned off on TH-cam is troubling... actually, one more thing: the proposal is very British Museum.

    Great video about an amazing building!!! I totally agree with you guys, there would be a great lost to demolish it. I love the way architecture can be so meaningful and with just simple resources can not only be just a place to storage old war stuff but a place to mourn and remember. There are lots of additions all over the world that made even better the original building. It would be an amazing challenge to redesign the whole site, keeping the memorial instead of wiping it out

    I'm from Canberra and this has been a contriversial issue over the past year. The project recieved a record number of submissions against it, however it is still going ahead. The NCA (National Capital Authority) are responsible for ensuring all designs meet criteria in the National Capital Plan on NCA managed land (Northbourne Ave, National Triangle, Lake Burley Griffin etc.) and therefore ACT Government have no say. If the ACT Government had to approve it (our council and state/territory governments are combined, we don't actually have a council), it probably wouldn't have passed. I dont think the NCA is fulfilling one of their key principles which is to fulfill, "The development of a city which both respects environmental values and reflects national concerns with the sustainability of Australia’s urban areas".

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really can't think of any other war memorial that integrates a military museum into it. If you look at the Tank Museum at Bovington or the Udvar-Hazy annex or the Canadian War Museum, they're all big sheds separate from the war memorial. They have programming you can't really do in a space like a war memorial; Big workshops, tracks for running vehicles, live demonstrations. The knife wall and the minimalist structure of Anzac Hall are a nice solution to a weird brief.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @clawrence034
      @clawrence034 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Archimarathon Oh, it's obscene to be spending that money on a war memorial expansion. It's like some meta version of Eisenhower's arms race speech. "The cost of one modern war memorial is this: a modern brick school in 30 cities". I meant that they trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to storing planes and tractors and that is going to cost a ton of money.

    If there is indeed a political ulterior motive involved in literally vanishing this jewel of a building [which is very likely that there is a political motive], in certain political parties and their ideologies there's an eagerness to get rid of anything that would be reminiscent of the previous administration and its "accomplishments", an eagerness to vanish the memory, specially if said previous admin. doesn't aligned or represents what the current administration stands for, happens a lot in dictatorships like regimes. It's absurd! There's also high levels of corruption and money laundering involved.

    Half a billion could not only go towards affordable housing but to help those veterans who are screwed physically and mentally by ‘serving their country’. Unfortunately if it only has the NCA to go through for approval it’s a Commonwealth entity (not the ACT Government) so they aren’t going to sway away from the Government’s position, although it will take an age to be approved.

    I've been fuming over this decision since I read about it. I had no idea what this award winning building looked like, but from the outset I knew this was the typical LNP world view where they know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.
    Now that I can actually see this extremely subtle piece of architecture I feel even worse. What is the point in Australia of even awarding excellence for anything if we basically cancel the award by removing all memory of the building or art work or service to our society ?
    Ok, let's just completely demolish the WHOLE National War Memorial. Let's build a completely new enormous structure to commemorate every aspect of every conflict Australia has ever been involved in. Every military folly every hard won battle for peace in our time. Yes wrap ourselves in the Australian flag by building a new memorial that will last a thousand years.

    You guys are bad for 'business' deals - you must stop trying to save notable fine working examples of architecture that get in the way of the 'common good'. Side note - not far from me a landlord left a building to weather & fall into disrepair to improve it's chances of being demolished/redeveloped.
