Listening to this album again after many years. As soon as this track starts, it goes through my head, "I THINK this is one of the tracks that makes me bawl", he opens his mouth and sings the first line and my face is wet.
Probably the best "love song" I have ever heard. Just describing the surroundings of the partner/ex partner can give a way clearer picture than just describing the person directly. The instrumentation is so fitting too, this is basically the best blend of nostalgia and melancholy I could imagine in a song. Another amazing song in Marks discography.
God this song kills me. I nearly break down every time it comes on. Probably my favourite song of April. April was the first SKM I listened to and I've been in love with all of Kozelek's music ever since. If you like this song, I'd recommend Fragile Bones (Feels Like Home) by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray. Him and Kozelek are two of the best introspective songwriters around. So sad and dreamy and beautiful...
Probably one of my top five songs of all-time. Beautiful lyrics and it takes me to a wonderful time in my youth pining over a summer romance on our annual vacations.
Saw them in September in Brighton UK. Tiny club (the Audio), packed to the rafters and there was this feeling 'we are so lucky to be here'. It was a magical gig that you wanted to go on and on!!Brilliant
I remember stumbling across this video ca. 2008, long before I was familiar with Mark’s music. I always thought it was so gorgeous and melancholy but I couldn’t remember who did it and the memory of this faded. Now, being a diehard fan for the past decade, I was floored when I found this video after all these years. I remember exactly where I was (my old apartment in Michigan) and what I was doing (taking a break from schoolwork) and what I was drinking (a novelty 3L bottle of Piraat Belgian Ale I won from Whole Foods Market lol) when I first heard this song and saw this video. I cried in my beer (I drank all 3L) and played it on repeat until my wife made me turn it off lol. Wow. Strange universe.
wonderful...i show it to everyone.. this video is great and should be recognized by Mark and the fellas as the official one.. it captures the song perfectly.. thanks a million!!!
Thanks Katamai so the many could hear this. I was directed to Sun Kil Moon by another fine musician and so glad to discover him first time today. I love the rhythm of his words and where he goes with them from a baby sister who picked the hue, her dad's guitar singing open tuned, to parks in London... a great voice and instrumentation. I love the imagery and images and music that travels! I'll be coming back here! Thanks Sun Kil Moon, Mark Kozelek, and Katamai!
I double that, the interview is amazing! I've recently found out that Kozelek's playing a gig in Antwerp (belgium), I'm gonna travel there from The Hague (Netherlands) to go see him. I know it's a bit of a 'lookatme!i'mobsessed!'-thing to say on youtube, but I'm almost proud of it, so I had to say it ; p woohoo!
Katy was an old girlfriend of Mark Kozelek's who died of cancer a few years ago (after they were seperated). A lot of the album is about her. There's a recent Onion AV Club interview between Mark and Ben Gibbard which goes into this a lot. It's worth reading.
Stunning song and a gorgeous video... very true to his aesthetic (or Nyree Watts' who does most of his cover artwork). The yellow is very fitting, I think, and I love how you washed it out at the end. I hope Mark sees this and thanks you.
There's a peace about the album, and in this song, I'm really glad to hear Mark being able to place Katy's death somewhere beautiful. He made the right move waiting for everything to calm down before singing about it. Best album I know from my favourite musician of all times.
@nickthestripper28 To echo the comments of an earlier poster, my friend you are certainly not alone in finding such emotions in Mark's music, or in the world in general. Speaking as someone who tried to commit suicide when I was younger, I can tell you there is hope and happiness in the world but it can be very hard, if not seemingly impossible, to find at times. I really hope you find such hope in the world.
I also believe all musicians will improve their skills by understanding how to record and produce their own recordings. This in itself, makes it more then worthwhile...
i am so blown away by this album, and Moorestown moves me more than any song I've heard in years. So I'd really appreciate if you could expand on what it's about as you've got me really intrigued already
Its another song about Katy, his muse; an ex-love of his that he wrote many songs about since the early days of the Red House Painters and throughout the years in Sun Kil Moon and his solo works. Katy passed away shortly before ‘Ghosts of the Great Highway,’ was released, and it’s clear that he never got over her or forgiven himself for whatever went wrong. Several songs on ‘April,’ are about coming to terms with her death, if not the overall theme of the album itself.
I moved to Moorestown in the summer 1980, right before 8th grade. I had a paper route on North Church St and a best friend who lived on that street as well. I spent many summer nights playing basketball under the lights at Maple Dawson Park and hanging out with my buddies til the wee hours of the morning. Im curious to know Kozelek’s connection to Moorestown.
this video is incredible! i actually like the version where it lags better--gives it a hazy quality that fits perfectly with the mood of the song. well done!
fastfrankblack It’s those tiny details he nails so perfectly; it’s every lost relationship boiled down to those elements unique to every person. I can’t remember every conversation with the girls I dated, but I remember the little things like this. So beautiful and perfect. It makes every relationship important, no matter how long it lasted or how it ended.
@Utah Man dude what? how long ago did you live there? im a moorestown resident rn and it's probably the most accepting place ever. It has a SAGA club for the LGBTQ+ community. Its such a nice place.
i love the video you did, ive always wanted to do a simular video to this...slightly different in my head but simular in a way...really enjoyed it. and the songs amazeing i love Sun Kil Moon!
This song is so breathtakingly beautiful. I love Mark Kozelek!!! Genius songwriter. If you love Kozelek, you should check out ''Fragile Bones (Feels Like Home)'' by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. I would say that Kozelek and Murray would have to be my favourite songwriters.
She moved away to Williamsburg Her eyes sad as a raven My thoughts will pause, my throat will swell When her name is spoken And looking past the cold, long sea I cannot bear to wonder now If the cascading soft lights Are glowing for us in Moorestown
i've known of this band for a while now but never heard their stuff so i didn't know that this is the same guy from red house painters until i heard his voice
@TheSunAndAntarctica Also, several bands have been successful with DIY type operations. I'm sure you a fan of some of them. A great song can be a great song without all of the "bells and whistles" of the studio. Getting it down on cheap gear definitely helps as demos and can be a gateway to better production opportunities. But I hear you; it will always be difficult to make anything close to a normal living off of music, and this is an area where I separate passion and money...
@nickthestripper28 You're not alone in your love for Mark Kozelek's music nor are you alone full stop. Your comment moved me, I hope things are well with you. Keep on keepin' on.
Music today is better then ever, and will only continue to grow. Technology has given us all huge possibilities. An example for those who can't understand: A musician buys home studio gear for cheap (not likely a few years back) Then promotes it through any number of websites (definitely not possible a few years back) There is so much good music out there I've never heard, and that is never going to change. The best thing that has happened to music is the slow decay of big record companies.
@TheSunAndAntarctica I addressed your argument. I just feel that whatever someone wants to do with their time is the correct way to go about their life. Thus, I work in a studio and play music; and I'm competent at both. I'm also decent at working on cars, and situations involving financial and business practices. The more knowledge acquired, the more life becomes interesting. This is my simple point, and I fully believe in it...
@nickthestripper28 You're not alone in your love for Mark Kozelek's music nor are you alone full stop. Your comment really moved me, I hope things are well with you. Keep on keepin' on.
I was on North Stanwick, about a half-mile from the schools. Lived there from 1986 to 1994 (when I graduated from high school). Though at the time I didn't fully appreciate it, looking back it was an amazing place to be a kid.
I sent this vid to a friend and the link said "This Video is no Longer available" but I clicked on the same link and I could watch it w/o any problems... I guess it must be some youtube's bug
Moorestown's a really nice town, but it's expensive to live here and the kids are spoiled. I wouldn't move here if I were you... But this is a great song.
The music world's most under-appreciated artist.
Very True
amen
There is nothing more melancholy than Sun Kil Moon. Hits you like a ton of bricks
2:09 is where this song knocks the wind out of me.
Red house painters too lol
Beautifully melancholic
Sun Kil Moon just washed over me like a wave. So much emotion and effort in this music. Simply brilliant...
Just drove through Moorestown NJ with this song playing, windows down, old parking lots and neighborhoods.
I woke up in the middle of the night to this song a few nights ago and I just absolutely bawled my eyes out. This is such a great song.
I cant get over how much I love this song.
***** i feel exactly the same
Possibly my favorite Sun Kil Moon song along with Carry Me Ohio. The video fits beautifully here as well.
Listening to this album again after many years. As soon as this track starts, it goes through my head, "I THINK this is one of the tracks that makes me bawl", he opens his mouth and sings the first line and my face is wet.
This may be his best, and that’s within a collection of pure artistic excellence.
This song made me shed a tear... first time a song has done that to me. Absolutely breath taking...
Great description of what makes this an epic song.
Still always find myself coming back to this. Pure art. Relaxation with a side of nostalgia.
Yeah just gonna be one of those nights :/
God this song kills me. I nearly break down every time it comes on. Probably my favourite song of April. The video plays out like a vivid memory and the song is melancholy and beautiful... the two really compliment each other.
Probably one of my top five songs of all-time. Beautiful lyrics and it takes me to a wonderful time in my youth pining over a summer romance on our annual vacations.
Looking out at the streetlights on a quarantine night. .. perfect
Saw them in September in Brighton UK. Tiny club (the Audio), packed to the rafters and there was this feeling 'we are so lucky to be here'. It was a magical gig that you wanted to go on and on!!Brilliant
I actually live in Moorestown - my school bus drives past those fields every day.
Is it just me or is this one of the best goddamn songs of all time?
yes
Love won and lost. Epic song.
One of my favorites of all time.
Song is haunting.

The most love song and hurt ever forever.
Al lado de Mark Kozelek los demas artistas son simples aficionados.
This men is The God of Sadness
This sooths my anxieties in a way no other music does, thanks Mark!
This album 'April' is just so beautifully composed.
I cant believe this song has been out there for so long love it love from Ireland
this should be the official video. its really unbelievable. good work. you should do more..
I don't remember where I ran into this band, but they are amazing. And that's coming from someone who loves metal, screamo, and punk.
wonderful...i show it to everyone.. this video is great and should be recognized by Mark and the fellas as the official one.. it captures the song perfectly.. thanks a million!!!

this video is fucking awesome. You really captured the emotional and personal nature of the song which Mark's voice conveys. Thank you!
this video is incredible! i actually like the version where it lags better--gives it a hazy quality that fits perfectly with the mood of the song. well done!

Very much impressed; befitting of most beautiful song
Amazing band all songs are lovely

GOD, that's a great song- he writes rhymes like Townes Van Zandt- not " Spoken with Token", but Raven and Spoken- brilliant and musical way of writing

@nickthestripper28 wow, music is truely a powerful force... music is my life
Wonderful thing
She moved away to Williamsburg
Her eyes sad as a raven
My thoughts will pause, my throat will swell
When her name is spoken
And looking past the cold, long sea
I cannot bear to wonder now
If the cascading soft lights
Are glowing for us in Moorestown
I cant wait for this album. I pre-ordered it from their website (and its autographed by Kozelek himself).
Did you enjoy the album? (13 years later) P.S. writing from Moorestown New Jersey
@@pmd_birdman7891 Hell yes I did! I still listen 14 years later
Moorestown is in New Jersey.

i live 10 minutes from moorestown (in collingswood), and knowing mark wrote a song about a place so close to me gives me warmth and comfort.

if im correct, i do believe this song is about my hometown.
You should check Red House Painters out, too.
It lags if it isn't in High Quality mode with the fmt 18 link. It's just youtube's crappy encoding.
i live in moorestown
@vladimir541 How is that even possible to do to a growing artist such as Sun Kil Moon
@nickthestripper28 Fair bout, sir. You win. God bless you too.
Thank you! They've been corrected.

@MPRC1136 I knew you would like this shit when I told you about it. LOL. Absolutely amazing.
What you said.
I used Sony Vegas. Used 3-4 different layers of video (and pictures) at the same time to achieve the "effect".
Great job on this Katami! Captures the mood of the song perfectly. Are the driving shots from NJ?
Love this song anyone out there how long is this song out there should Google it but is there sun kill moon fans out there love from Ireland

@roflbiscuit Well in the sense that it's a little skippy, but it almost appears that it's intentional.
Moorestown's a really nice town, but it's expensive to live here and the kids are spoiled. I wouldn't move here if I were you... But this is a great song.
