    Great video. I hadn't heard of digital eye measuring systems before. My optometrist worked up my last pair of progressive lenses using a clear overlay and a marker. That worked ok, but it would be interesting to have my next pair done with one of these new systems and see if it makes a difference.

    Great information Robert! Thank you!
    Can you kindly consider making a smartlife vs varilux progressive lens comparison video outlining the price points, anti-scratch properties/durability, lens “accuracy”, thickness at a certain index ie 1.74 etc?
    High index progressive lenses are very costly and for some of us we would love for that the lenses to be a worthwhile investment.
    Thanks again and keep up the great work with all your videos!

    Thanks for the useful video. I've recently been given a small reading ADD, +0.75 on my previous short-sighted prescription of -2.00. I have visited quite a few opticians and one lens they seem to be trying to tempt me with is the Zeiss "early-stage verifocal". This is about 1/3 of the price of the Zeiss standard varifocal, suitable for those with an ADD up to +1.00 and has been described to me as a "boost" for reading rather than a standard varifocal design. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this lens and if you know how it works? I can't seem to find any information online about it at all. Thanks.

    Thank you so much for this video. I have very bad eyesight (with cataracts) and varifocals aren't working for me.., I have to use large print on my pc, but when I want to use my phone or look at something in detail close up, its actually better if I take my glasses off, repeated removal of my glasses causes them to get mishapen. When in a supermarket I have to get close up to see labels on goods. Its like I'm half blind, even with my varifocal glasses on. I keep saying to opticians they aren't helping me to see as much as I expected but never get any answers. Is there anything I can do to maximise my vision? Where should I go to get an optician who can help? How do I find the sort of optician/service you are talking about?

    Hi. Good information thanks. I just got my first pair from Asda optical. I've had them 5 days however, I notice I can only really see the computer at work clearly by seemingly looking through the reading part of the lenses I.e tilting my head back. Can I ask asda to look at them again and possibly change the lenses?

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The downside with most varifocals is they aren't ideal for long periods of screen use. You have two options: look for better quality varifocals with a larger computer zone or invest in a seperate pair dedicated for a computer. Also, if the positioning of the lenses isn't precise, this will exacerbate the problem. It's worth watching this video: th-cam.com/video/Gb6qhi6RfEA/w-d-xo.html&

    I wear trifocals with lines and have gotten along very well with them because I need the intermediate strength as well as near and far. But I have heard that lined trifocals may one day no longer be available. If that happens and I want good intermediate vision I would have to get varifocals but I worry about not being able to get accustomed to them. What do people do who need intermediate vision do if they can't use varifocals, especially of a trifocal is no longer available to them?

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi William, firstly I think trifocals are very under-utilised but I don't think they are going away in the near future.
      However, most people prefer varifocals due to the aesthetics, material and coating options and ease of use.
      If you have worn trifocals for a long time it probably would be difficult for you to adjust to varifocals, and the same would be true for someone going from vari to trifocals.
      But neither varifocals or trifocals give a really good intermediate zone. So I always recommend office lenses for extended periods on the computer or doing DIY. If you try them, you will thank me.

      @@thespectaclefactory Thank you for this information. My situation is that my work as a teacher requires rapid shifting among all 3 zones. I am also an organist for a large church for which I change to single vision lenses. Fortunately my optometrist does offer cost-free change back to trifocals minus the cost of the trifocals should I try one of the higher grade varifocals and it just doesn't work out. Its the peripheral blur that concerns me most. I have a colleague who actually changed from trifocals to bifocals and had the reading portion to focus just a bit further away when reading as a sort of compromise between near and intermediate. Not sure. how it has been working out for him but maybe that is an option should trifocals become extinct. I would like to see trifocals resurge as an option for people though this may not happen. I don't care about the aesthetics. Thank You again.

    Thanks for the advice but there’s something I don’t understand. Why would different field configurations on the same type of lens result in vast price differences. Surely it’s just a matter of grinding different areas of the lens or do you have to use different lens blanks depending on the prescription?

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the extra you pay is for the R&D that goes into creating an improved lens design. It typically involves a lot of expertise, research and patient trials over a period of years.

    Thanks, wish I could come to you... I picked up my varifocal glasses today from vision express. The prescription seems ok but they used the pen on the glass method. Now I have them, to watch TV or distance, I have to pull the glasses down or tilt my head into my chest as the focus is right at the top, for reading or iPad I have to push them up off the bridge of my nose because the near focus is right at the bottom, also looking in the middle of a sentence which is clear, each end is unclear and I have to move my head just to see the end of the sentence, can’t be right. Basically a complete waste of time and all very unnatural to wear. So disappointed. Hi Robert! Thanks for two informative pieces on Progressives which I am using for the last 20 yrs now; I have been using Essilor! I also a patient of Central Rentia Vein Occlusion secondary to Glaucoma in One Eye and both are being treated by the Ophthalmologists here in India and the two conditions are being managed well. However, due to CRVO my VA in the affected eye is 6/24, partial, and doesn't correct beyond while it is 6/6 in the other! My query is that since the affected eye doesn't help me in reading, can I wear Progressives in One Eye while having in the other eye in one spectacle have the glasses for Near Vision and in the other for Distance vision? Optometrists aren't able to say anything on this! What kind of Progressives will serve me well when I don't drive and will use them for reading and computer in addition to socialisation and going for walks/runs? Sorry for the long write up and the question!

    • @NirajPant2
      @NirajPant2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I add my corrected Near Vision on the Normal Side is N/6 while the CRVO side is N/24! The power of lenses prescribed is +1.25 and -- 1.5 Cyl 180 Degrees Axis and Add +3.00! I don't suffer from any other Eye or systemic issues!

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you certainly can have your glasses set up this way... in your case there would be no downside. Go for SV distance in the weaker eye and your brain will utilise the good eye monocularly.
      BUT - and this is important - the progressive lens needs to be ordered with 0 inset. This means the reading zone is directly below your eye as there will likely be no convergence due to no binocular vision. Usually, the reading zone is inset by around 2-3mm per eye to compensate for how the eyes converge when reading at close range. However, this won't be the case for yourself.
      Due to the high add, Hoya Lifestyle 3 lenses will be well suited as they split the add between the front and back surfaces, which reduces distortion in higher add powers.

      @thespectaclefactory  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, sorry for the delay in responding as we often don't get notifications for TH-cam comments... the answer is it depends on the brand. The most complex lenses start with a special 'blank' as we call it and are worked on form there to make them bespoke. The cheaper lenses start as just a basic single focus lens. It's important to note that the different 'grades' of varifocals are not that comparable between different brands, and this is one reason why.

      @@thespectaclefactory BS and you know it or are you just dumb? Your answer doesn't make any sense. Special "blank" LOL

      @thespectaclefactory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bekanav I'm not exactly sure what you are saying, but there's no need to be so angry!
      So for example, the Hoya ID technology is produced from a pre-moulded blank which has a proportion of the add on the front surface. The back surface is then customised to the prescription to form a finished lens. This is different to most freeform lenses which start off life as a generic single vision blank. Hoya argue that it is optically superior, and it is certainly more costly for them.
      Please tell me where I am wrong...

    • @bekanav
      @bekanav 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thespectaclefactory Unfortunately there is reasons to be angry: people have to pay big money from simple pieces of plastic and metal wire.
      Certainly Hoya say their "design" is superior, it is part of the game. Marketing, fancy names, same BS all over. Big money and lot of marketing for at best marginal improvements for suspicious basic idea.
      Varifocal lenses are quite a lot based on customer getting used to them - and yes people can somehow get used to very silly things.
      Not far down on comments there is a guy who feels disoriented with his new glasses which he payed "quite a lot"... He thinks it is the fault of the company he bought them LOL
      This whole eyeglass business is rotten

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bekanav Just because we make a profit (and I am not a wealthy person by the way) from selling glasses does not mean we are 'rotten'.
      A £100,000 car is not twice as fast as a £50,000 car. That doesn't make the one who buys an expensive car an idiot nor the one who sells it a bad person.
      Of course there is marketing involved, but there is also quite robust research since optical lenses are classed as medical devices. I have seen the data on wearer trials for example with the latest SmartLife lenses - they are tested on hundreds of people in double blind tests before they are sold to the public, and the vast majority prefer the SmartLife lenses. Even if the difference is marginal, it is an improvement nonetheless.
      Why should we not recommend the latest technology and let the customer decide if it is worth it to them or not? This video was designed to educate people on the pros and cons - was there anything in the video you disagree with?
