About 20 years ago I met the great opera singer Rene Fleming. In our brief conversation I mention our mutual love of jazz singers with Sarah Vaughn being her #1 favorite. (Mine too). She said she could have easily been an opera singer but wasn't interested and too lazy. I saw "Sassy" 5x times LIVE from 1981-89 right up to her very last engagement at The Blue Note on Bleeker St. NYC. There I saw her 2 nights in a row. I recently read that she ended that 2 week engagement early as she was diagnosed with lung cancer a few days before the end of her gig there. She went back to California where she died in under a year. May I say this- Sarah Vaughn was singing absolutely beautifully with lung cancer!!! She was one in 10 million! A rare and wonderful gem.
WOW SHE IS MY NEW FAVOURITE!!! I'M JUST A 26-YEAR- OLD WHO FELL IN A RABBIT HOLE OF JAZZ MUSIC AFTER I RANDOMLY WATCHED "A-TISKET-A-TASKET" OF ELLA FITZGERALD.... NOW IM HERE! AFTER A VERY LONG HISTORY OF JAZZ PERFORMANCE BINGE WATCHING! I LOVE YOU SARAH VAUGHAN! I KNEW YOU SO LATE, I WISH I'VE KNOWN YOU LONG TIME AGO! 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻
Sarah Vaughn, the Divine! Her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” starting at 15:30 is the best and most definitive version I have ever heard. Her phrasing, vibrato, and perfect tone makes this performance an absolute masterpiece.
Her voice is just like...what?! When I'm listening to the music, her voice is so consistent that it just seamlessly fades into the instrumental, until it ceases to exist. It's incredible. Truly.
My favorite Jazz singer Sarah, I was so lucky to see her just before she passed at Blues Alley in DC. She had the audience in her hand singing from her Brazilian album. Saw the wonderful Ella in my hometown Mexico City with Count Bassie. Gloria Lynn in her latter years in DC. Wish I could have seen Morgan's King live. All of them in my top 5. ❤❤❤❤❤
Home quarantine brings back Sarah Vaughn Gloria Lynne Ella Fitzgerald Carmen Mcrae Johnny Harttman Joe William's Arthur Prysock Nat King Cole.... Quarantine is good😌😌😌😌😌😌
When writer Kurt Vonnegaught (sp?) was on his deathbed, someone asked him: what's the best thing about living? His response, "music." He could have had Sarah in mind when he said that.
1958 was the year Sarah Vaughn was in her prime. Enjoy the purity and beauty of the tunes, as well as the trio of Ronnell Bright, Richard Davis and Art Morgan.
I first heard young Sarah Vaughan at the Hi Hat in Boston a few years earlier than this performance first with Lester Young, heading the "house band" and also with a trio backing her. Her voice was a marvel then and still is, or was until she died. Her singing will keep enhancing listeners as long as vocal music lives.
I'm glad to know that Sarah had such universal appeal. The good stuff usually rises to the top. Maybe not so much today, but definitely back then when people knew the difference between excellence and mediocrity.
Her timbre, vocal technique, phrasing, diction, expression, presentation : it's all beyond perfection. She masters over the material, but it never makes me cry.
@@adaliantsiki Wouldn't say effortless, sweat drips off her body -- Besides that, after rewatching, must admit: she left me in tears after all ! ! Esp. over exciting Bill Baley song -- Simply couldn't hold it back --
She is an angel….!!!! So humble yet a lovely, talented woman… Not like the rubbish of nowadays!!! A true artist and with Ella the best ever voices in music history!❤️❤️❤️🇮🇹🇬🇧🇮🇹🌹
A classic, made at a time when electric correction was not even imagined. Back when singers had to actually be able to sing! Sure, you've got some decent singers these days, but back when this was made, the standard was considerably higher, and oh, so, satisfying when fulfilled! Sarah Vaughn certainly met the quota!
She is one of my favorite female singers of all time. She made her incredible vocal skills seem effortless in a way that makes you feel as though her performance is an intimate conversation. Some artists just know how to perform. They invite you in, as they say. This whole show is a treasure, thanks for posting it.
I was, and am, a huge fan of Ella's, saw her live a number to times, but I consistently regret not having turned on to Sarah sometime after her sad death. The woman just blows my mind!!
Woow, that splendor ... 💖 One of the most important singers of the Jazz scene, good and beautiful miss Sarah Vaughan !! 😘💖🌹 Thanks my friend, great video 👏👏👍😉 Like! Have a wonderful weekend my friend, Cheers!!! 👋👋😊✌🎶🎶🌈🌈
Why I couldn't be born in the Jazz era there so many talented people it's so hard for me to have a favorite I wish I had the chance to meet Sarah Vaughan I would have been at all her concerts 😔
In this historical "Memories Album" collected by TH-cam, Sarah's voice is just amazing !! She probably the best Soulsinger of her time, simply a QUEEN ......
Misty.. my God, she said she's having a cold.. dear Lord I'll settle for that cold for the rest of my life, if I could perform like that... I promise....unreal rare gem sweet miss divine....absolutely stunning...
What a great voice! A rare slightly vibrato and very flexible voice. And it's a delight to watch her singing. No wander she was called "The Divine One". Thanks a lot for sharing!
Discovered this last weekend. A huge thank you to whoever uploaded this. Thank you for making sure future generations get to see such monumental art being performed by such exquisite talent.
This old footage just proves you don't have to twerk and be half naked to be extremely sexy! I love how women dressed conservative back in the day and they could actually sing. I love this!
So great to see these performances. I've loved Sarah's music since the 80's and recently I read Queen of Bebop: The Musical Lives of Sarah Vaughan by Elaine M. Hayes. A brilliant study of the Sarah's towering, original talent!
I prefer here voice when younger, 18 to 30 years old. But her voice changed in later years, became more mellow and deep. Her work with the Bob James trio is a good example of the later period. I dont know which is better, she is just incredibly talented.
Queen Sarah has a voice that is an instrument of elegance and grace. The equivalent to a Stradivarius violin. Sheer beauty.

Make me wish I took up singing when I was a child. If we had music like this in the house I probably would have.

"seamlessly fades into the instrumental, until it ceases to exist".
The art of the word describing the art of the voice. Bravo!
It's like butter!
I wish her concerts from Sweden were recorded/released on vinyl. Some extremely fine interpretations in these concerts.

She was a real beauty back in 58. I usually don't pay much attention to singers, she is the exception. Noone compares to Sarah.
one of the greatest voices of all times!
She's one of the greatest phenomenon of all times!!!!
Just imagine listening to that beautiful voice LIVE. Not only her voice, her eyes, expressions, everything. Amazing band of course.

Even after vocal music ends i have a feelings its the singers from the 40’s 50’s and 60’s that will bring society back to vocal music in the future
What I would give to go back in time to that show!
Starts off light years ahead of any other singer who's ever drawn breath and just gets more and more amazing as it goes on.
I'm glad to know that Sarah had such universal appeal. The good stuff usually rises to the top. Maybe not so much today, but definitely back then when people knew the difference between excellence and mediocrity.
Not sure it did, even then. The majority of be people were probably listening to something else.

She is so cute💕
The bass player in the 1958 sets had exquisite taste and sensibility. Really great lines that supported the vocal and the song alike.
