I started out the same way. I was miserable when my parents dropped me off to race practice because it was so boring and repetitive and I would sneak out of practice and shred the terrain park. my parents soon figured out I was skipping practice and they signed me up for the free ski team I excelled and am now too 30 in the nation for freestyle skiing in my age group. Thanks mom!!

Hey brotha been watching a bunch of your vids and landed on this one today. My junior year of high school I fractured my L5S1 in football and then again during the wrestling season (didn’t listen to my doctor). This vid really resonated with me and after watching your channel I feel the urge to start trying to do more on my skis. Have had the fear of really injuring my back for past 5 years and that kept me away from jumps and rails. But I think it’s finally time work past that fear and start having fun again.

The effects from multiple concussions usually show up later in life. It’s now known that when you injure the head or brain in the same spot before twice before the first injury has had time to heal properly there’s something like a 99% chance of permanent damage. Their learning more about CTE than ever now. What’s it worth. Think of the people (your kids, wife, family)that will have to deal with your behavior and issues later on when this starts to show it’s true colors.

Damn dude. Made me think back to my own skiing injury. Long story short, exploded both of my shins and broke my left arm clean in half at the same time at 14. End of my skiing "career" right there. Luckily the only lasting effects are lack of rotation in my left wrist and some back problems caused by my spine being compressed so much i lost over an inch of my height. Might sound sucky, but honestly the older i get the more i realize how lucky i am to still have a normal enogh life. Still able to ski casually, though my shins are quite mangled so ski-boots arent excactly comfortable

I'm a skater and I've been dealing with back problems since I was 16 and got a unaddressed compression fracture in my lower lumbar. now I'm 25 and have been off the board for about two or three months now with a herniated disc. the herniation is partly caused by the compression fracture in my back that I never got taken care of and healed improperly. This last time it happened I was skating and I didn't even fall just kind of stomped my trick hard and like you said I walked up the bank and sat down and when I went to stand up I couldn't. let me tell you that is the most terrifying thing I've experienced. I've broken both my feet my ankle and wrists and this is by far my worst and scariest injury. I could barely walk for the first month and my legs would just give out in excruciating pain randomly. recently I've been doing better going to physical therapy and trying to get the disc to go back in place/ regain strength in my back muscles. its definitely been a struggle and at times very discouraging and dark but hearing you talk about your experience made me feel a little bit better. even if we may never see what could've been without the injuries just knowing that its possible to heal and at least be able to still do what you love is reassuring. love the content, you made me start playing steep!!

I was a 3x CNISF (California Nevada interscholastic ski federation) state champ. Freshman, junior and senior year. Sophomore year i was in a near fatal accident at Northstar after our last hs GS race before states. Was convinced to take one more run before lunch. Was on the backside doing high GS speed. Went over a blind knoll and a Jerry had stopped below and couldn't be seen from more than about 10 ft away. Lit him up like a linebacker. Put my helmet into his chest. He broke 5 ribs, clavicle in 3 spots, bruised his heart and had to be life flighted. I was knocked out for over 30 mins and shattered my radial and ulna in my left arm. Had 2 plates and 18 screws put in. Suffered a moderate, borderline severe TBI. Concussion protocols were very different in 1997. I had already had a pretty bad concussion less than 2 months earlier during football season. Lost my USSA points so I went to new Zealand that summer for some FIS races to try and get my points back and I knocked myself silly again. I had at least 3 bad concussions from fall to the hat summer. It changed me mentally. Stopped working out seriously and tried to rely on talent. Which is fine for a 30 sec Boreal SL but if you try to ski a world cup caliper run without legs of steel you will get crushed, no matter how talented you are.

Went home for a month and then went back for the last couple weeks of the winter season. Went straight into the park and hit the big line only to sink into the slushy landing on a 360. I got flung forward and landed on my head again, breaking the bottom vertebrae in my neck. Had to give up on skiing after that but I am lucky enough to still be walking.

I collapsed my T6 and fractured T7 when I was 21 there is no words to help describe to people the problems breaking vertebrae causes I was going about business for about 2 months before the doctors finally did a proper scan and found out. My back has never properly healed, fatigue is now a constant part of my life and I'm 33, struggle to work more than part time but I'm otherwise pretty healthy and can still walk and my body functions as intended which I am grateful for ;)

Great video! I have had the same experience myself. About two years ago i went skiing almost everyday as well as playing basketball at the same time. After almost every session my back was hurting a lot and i didn't really think anything about it but one time my back was in so much pain i couldn't really walk and i was like, something must be wrong. Well we went to see a doctor and we found out that my L5 was broken on both sides and i was immediately not allowed to do any sports. Well it healed almost fully and i after that i probably started doing stuff too fast because like a month later it was hurting like a bitch again. Well it healed ALMOST FULLY again and i was back doing everything imaginable. Then a couple of months went by and i was happy playing basketball in the summer but it starts hurting again. I immediately knew what it was and i was just so mad. I chose to quit basketball because i just didn't want to fracture my vertebra anymore. This season has been the best one ever even tho my L5 is never going to fully heal back to what it was. I just have to live with it. Luckily it doesn't hurt that much anymore. Skiing is the best thing ever!

Thanks for sharing your story! I relate as I fracture my T12,L1 vertebrae snowboarding when I was 18, kinda comforting to know I’m not the only one!

I broke my first bone a few months ago at work back in August 2022. I broke the Distil Phalanx bone (end of my left index finger/pointer finger). Broke it near the tip of the finger cause the distil phalanx starts about mid way up to the tip/end of finger. What happened was I was trying to lift a huge block at work, it was obviously too heavy so I dropped it and it came down somehow, someway onto my finger and crushed the hell out of it. Major major major pain right away, and a huge amount of numb feeling. I couldn't feel my finger, couldn't bend it for that moment and was bleeding everywhere cause the crush injury actually cut a very tiny piece of my finger off near the tip around the fingerprint area. Needless to say I kept working after an hour of rest in the break room and never went to get stitches so it bled for 4 or 5 days off and on. I finally went a month later exactly like 30 days later in September for a X-ray and I found out I broke my finger. I had been complaining about feeling something sharp whenever I press that finger down on a flat surface, something like a rock or something but it's in my finger (bone fragment or bone now broke and cut off in a weird way).
The doctor said it's a tuft fracture meaning it will heal itself and dont need injury. Still to this day I feel that rock when I press my finger down hard on a surface. My finger looks mostly normal no one would know unless I told them, or they take a close inspection. Anyhow, that's my first bone break at age 32, I got lucky cause it was the end of my finger so not too bad. I wasn't lying when said i'm the type of guy to break a bone and keep working....

i know about breaking something on the hill. Broke my arm in february 22, and what you said around 11:30 makes total sense. the adrenaline punches you, then sometime later, it just all hits and you collapse.

A few years back after a DH crash doctors told me that I had broken off a piece at L3 - L5. I thought they meant it is "somewhere there in-between" but I later found out that they meant that transverse processes had broken off from L3, L4 and L5! :o 2 weeks sick leave lol, luckily only temporary pain and no other symptoms.
It was the first time I was wearing "body armor", gave me too much confidence.
