- ‘Jahmake Ska’ is a track in the style of original Jamaican ska artists such as Desmond Dekker and Prince Buster and later ska groups like The Specials. It features an offbeat hi-hat pattern, syncopation and cross stick on the snare among its techniques.
The distinctive feel of ska is instantly recognisable for its hi-hat patterns that play on the offbeat rather than on the beat, as is usually the case in rock ’n’ roll and R&B. In traditional ska, the drummers often play with a cross stick on the snare instead of a conventional stroke and many ska drummers have a timbale in their kit for accents. The style requires a high level of syncopation to balance the beats on the bass and snare with the hi-hat patterns.
