    acting does not equal roleplaying

Read the definition of roleplaying. It is about playing and acting out a role. That is roleplaying.

Correct. Acting is theatrics, which is potential facet of a RPG.

@@FMD-FullMetalDragon its fully possible to roleplay without acting & act without roleplaying.
acting is about presentation. roleplaying is about decision making. you can roleplay without ever talking "in voice".
the decision making works kind of like this
story games= "what makes the most interesting narrative"
roleplaying="what would my character do in this situation"
strategy games="what will give me the best mechanical advantage"
in reality most games are a mix of all three. how much of each is dependent on table culture.

@@jw66667your breakdown of the 3 styles is right I think. But I would say that if you go about "doing what your character would do" in character, you are roleplaying "better" than someone who isn't. I completely agree that people who try to play "in character" can help everyone else have a better game if done correctly. It can be overdone and pointless and that's bad, but I think MOST players/dms should be aiming to improve this area of their play, which means messing up sometimes too.

In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of 3D Gamers squabbling with 2D Gamers over 3rd Gen Roleplaying games.
But because, I am an enlightened 4D Gamer. 🧐🧐
jokes aside, this was an interesting conversation. 👍

I've found it can really come down to the energy one has at the table and where they like to focus said energy for their efforts during the game. Some people like to focus there energy on decision making and trying to solve the puzzle and circumstance at hand. Roleplaying, as Black Lodge Games is using it in this discussion, isn't necessarily at odds with the decision making, but it is another outlet for their energy that might "compete" partially with the other aspects of the game they prefer to engage in. For one reason or another.
Maybe they lack practice in this form of RP, and thus its more draining for them to engage in, like an untrained muscle. Maybe they don't just get much value and enjoyment from those aspects and they feel its a waste of their time at the table to turn a one minute moment into several minutes (to exaggerate a bit ). Some people just have different tastes and it's not where they like to focus their immersion.
It's less that these things are at odds and more just people like to focus more on what they
re familiar with, and of course that which they enjoy more. Wargamers/optimization types are their to be immersed in the game of the game. The rules and such. Persona players are gonna really wanna put their focus on the character they're playing that's different to that of themselves. Some, which many would call Roleplayers, just want a loose avatar to facilitate themselves as a member of the setting. It's less playing a character and more playing an avatar of themselves in the games circumstances. Individuals belong to these groups at different ratios depending on their personal preferences and such. Subjective taste and all that.

Great interview you managed to make Ginger Fraiser and Young Steve Buscemi watchable for an extended period of time, unlike their podcast where they call everyone autistic and garbage

These edge lords advocate not playing with friends only doing online games where you essentially do a “casting call” and any other way of playing is garbage, this is what i do not like about them, role playing is great but being a militant role player is like being a militant atheist, whats the point

It is funny watching two painfully autistic dudes rant for an hour at the OSR being autistic for "not doing" something 99.99% of the OSR has been doing and advocating for since its inception.
Its clear from their podcasts they dont actually know what the OSR is considering all of their examples boil down to attributing 5e D&D mechanics to OSR games and acting like the old school mindset is rules lawyering and min maxing stats.
