That Jazzmaster is amazing honestly. I had no idea who J was when I got mine. I played a lot of guitars, some much more expensive. I even played other Jazzmasters. But that J Mascis Jazzmaster is just something special. For $500 it's great. I'd go as far as saying they could price it at $999 or $1099 and I still would've bought it. It's that good
I’d have to say that between the two guitars the best one is definitely the best one. There’s no doubt that when both of them are played back to back that the winning guitar sounds and plays better. It does, however, come down to personal taste when you realize that the better one is just that good that you might need to get the other one to have a comparison, despite the fact that they are two different species of animals in the same phylum. It’s nice to see that the best guitar is represented in the best way for our pleasure. Thanks for this video and I am not a bot.
Yes, the JMJM has P-90ish Pickups. By this I mean they have adjustable pole pieces and there are two small magnets on either side of the pole pieces. These pickups seemed too hot for me, (Stock PU Bridge 9.0 Ohms, Neck 8.4 Ohms) so I swapped them out for Fender Pure Vintage '65 pickups since I wanted a more traditional JM sound (Bridge 6.9 Ohms, Neck 6.7 Ohms). I'm not disappointed. It has 1mg pots, a rhythm circuit like a traditional JM and an outstanding satin finish neck. A really great instrument.
Aside from the blue sparkle finish, The signature telecaster neck specs are what makes the guitar, IMO. Bought one from stratosphere for my personal tele build. Reminds me of custom shop specs, TBH.
The neck on the mascis JM is just perfect. The p90 ish pickups are ok. They do the job. I’ll be putting his sig JM pickups in once they’re back in stock. Getting a 9.5” radius TOM bridge made that guitar incredible to play.
@@nicodarnese7901unfortunately it has been discontinued. I tried to source another one last year and I’m kicking myself for not buying a few of them originally
that neck on the tele sounded wonderful tbh! Never been a huge fan of the tele sound, but always loved the look.. But this ones calling to me. Great playing guys!
For me the jazzmaster really converted me to jazzmasters and it’s the guitar in my collection I’m building that I want to modify . I like leaving the others just as they are
I have both of those, I bought the Jazzmaster in 2014 and just picked up the Tele. J. Mascis doesn’t allow his name to be put on junky products, but he still likes to keep them affordable…kudos to him, and it’s in-line with his punk background ethos :) Nice review, cool to see the two guitars together!
Just bought the jazzmaster the other day! In love with it, does not feel cheap whatsoever on any part! Got a stupidly good deal on it and figured I'd be changing out the tuning pegs, pickups, wiring, and bridge/trem but honestly none of it really needs to be changed. Bridge isn't my favourite kind for a typical jazzmaster but I've got a TVL on the way that can be used for that if I want the traditional trem feel! A+ guitar!
You guys rock. Jmascis is and has been my man since the late 80's. Had the jazzmaster switched to a lesPa😮ul I miss it everyday and got my eyes on that rele. Love his music listen to it and play along everyday. Gotta have a big muff a double Rick and loop pedal and it's j. all the way.
Not a fan of the sparkle blue, but man, I was listening while watching, and there was one pickup switch that made me jerk my head toward the screen with an audible, “ooooo.” Great sounds from that Tele. Congrats on the addition to your collection. I’ve been debating if I’m going to get the Mascis JM or the FSR JM. Still undecided, though leaning toward the FSR.
Yea, I legit wanted go into this and not like the tele and man!!!! I love it! That’s the best sounding tele I’ve played in awhile. I would say, the Mascis has the better neck. But overall, I’d say the CV50s.
@Neon Thunderbird Different strokes for different folks! I'm not that fond of the mirror pick guard either, but it's better than the Jimmy Page Dragon Tele pick guard by the looks of it. I have that model, and the pick guard is already warping a bit.
3:01 there's kevin parker from Tame Impala too, he uses a Squier J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster live a couple of times during their set I love your videos!! Please make a video about these cool Sunn amps behind you
In keeping with this channel, Teles have, for decades, been the go to guitars for countless working class musicians. It would be cool for WCM to take a look at an Affinity or CV Tele as a platform for relatively inexpensive pickup swaps. Jason could even challenge himself with a pair of (Strat sounding) Twisted Tele pickups, with Tia, of course, getting first dibs!
@@esimms1889 Surprisingly enough, I have a FSR CV60s Tele in Olympic white with black binding. I'm game to do an episode about it, It's already modded with Pure Vintage pickups and a 4 way selector.

@@spiralwall It's not, the CV50s is basically a reskin of the CV60s. When compared to the SQJMJM it has different frets, different neck, different pickups, different wood. The CV50s is more vintage accurate when compared to the SQJMJM. But we got a video comparing the two on the way. :)
This channel is Great!!!!! I'm a big Jazzmaster nut as well. I would buy the Mascis JM in a heartbeat, sadly I don't think it comes in lefty. ive got both the jazzmaster is my go to in lots of ways but the tele is my favourite. What do you guys think of the bridge im having issues with the b string sliding when im bending ?
@@JasonTMays Jason, thanks for looking into it and passing on the official final word. I don't know how many JM JM's there are in the wild but once the NOS is gone, they're going to command a significant price upcharge on the used market. I now realize just how lucky I was to recently be able to buy a used Squier J. Mascis neck on Reverb to put on my Squier CV Late 50's Jazzmaster. I also picked up a Descendant Vibrato and Halon bridge but don't tell Tia! She needs to set up a Mastery GoFundMe page LOL(I'd be happy to contribute).

The Tele is nice, one of the better efforts, but I think overpriced in anticipation of a proven market.I built two from parts , for half the investment, that leave it in the dust.
That Jazzmaster is one of the best guitars I’ve ever owned.
Me too. At the pricepoint there is no good reason for any player not to have the JMJM.
I second or third that. By far the best even compared to my MiJ 1996 JM
So refreshing when people are reviewing gear just for the fun of it and not because they're out to sell it. Kudos WCM!
Thank you!!! Yea, we definitely just want to keep it fun and we love gear!
thanks! it's all about the love of the gear!
The drummer from Witch made some cool guitars.
How did we forget him!

The bass player of Dinosaur Jr., Lou Barlow, also plays one of those signature Jazzmasters on some of his songs for Dinosaur. So +1 to the list there.

Sweet, nice playing, really love that Tele, might have to splurge.
It's B. Maskus. He plays Troutwood... 🤣😂HAHAHAHA!!! Cheers guys! 🥰😇Love the show.
I've owned the J Mascis Jazzmaster for 3 years. Once it's setup properly it's hands down the best Squire guitar your money can buy!
Took one look at the pics when these were announced and preordered, my most expensive guitar to date and first tele. Love love love this thing 💙🤍
Love how the first clip you play of J he is holding his original fender Japan purple signature
