I had an anterior ankle fusion one year ago and it was one of the worst things ever happened to me. I regret my decision every day and from today's perepctive i can hardly imagine any reason to get a fusion. Maybe if it the last thing you can do before your leg needs to get taken off. I would rather have my old heavyly damaged ankle back but ofc that is impossible. The pain is like before the surgery but now i feel severly physically disabled because of the loss of motion. Personally i rate this procedure as grievous body harm. In addition to the pain in the foot area i suffer from pain in the hips and the back. I know that there are ppl who experienced a fusion in a positive way but for me personally it is a complete disaster. I would strongly recommend to check out any alternative treatments as long and thoroughly as possible.

Hello Floyd, I am about to have this procedure, I am yet to speak to anybody face to face that has had the surgery. I am not looking forward to it but my end state arthritis dictates that it is necessary, so they say. I'm 39 how old are you?

@@foord09 Hello Andrew. I am 2 years older than you had my fusion because of end state arthritis and avascular necrosis of the talus bone. If you are looking for more exchange of experience i would recommend facebook groups like 'ankle joint fusion' or 'total ankle replacement group' to name just two (there are more, just do a quick research). There are plenty of people from all over the world who are very helpful and supportive. You can ask all questions about different treatments and everything about fusion and/or alternatives. I wish i had known about these groups before i had my surgery. Good luck with your decisions but as long as you can endure the pain i would recommend to get as much informations about your options as possible.

I don't understand why you feel "severely disabled" because of the movement, what reason to feel that way? It doesn't change anything whether the person has movements or not, the only problem is if there is severe pain

I have had this surgery done and I now suffer from constant chronic pain. Locking a joint in a position that is supposed to have movement doesn't relieve pain but causes more problems. The pain I suffer with every day I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy, it affects me both physically, mentally and emotionally. I wasn't told properly about the out come of having the surgery all the doctors told me at the time was that it would either fix my pain or make it worse. Bear in mind I had several other surgeries from a kid to adult (they removed an ingrown bone from my ankle and I had a partial fusion of my ankle joints) physio, pain management, pain rehabilitation you name it I probably tried it now the doctors tell me there is nothing they can do i just have to live with the chronic pain. Depression and anxiety is just two of the symptoms I suffer with because of my decision to have it done based on what my doctors advised me to do.

Hi. Same problem .ankle fracture plus dislocation doctors advised me to do surgery immediately but we decided to put cast and not ready to go for surgery. Just put tight cast and returned to home.after seven days we removed that cast on self we take an x-ray whether surgery is necessary or not
With gods grace it x-ray shows it bones automatically move to it's position little .so after that doc telling it will heal automatically but it will take time that's all. My doubt why they prefer surgery to all they know it heal automatically . Money minded people's...pls wait if ur below 45 or something it will heal naturally.......

I have a friend that lives in constant pain in his ankle from a terrible car accident that broke many bones in his Lower leg. He had a lot of screws and plates put in, and they have since come loose and you can feel them moving around if you rub his leg.
I think he would be better off with a below the knee amputation. He cannot use his leg at all, so it’s like he doesn’t have two legs already. Id rather live with a prosthetic leg than live in constant agonizing pain.

Everyone complaining about ankle fusions you can always be reevaluated for surgery and have the hardware in your bones removed.....an alternative to ankle fusion is total ankle replacement....there are pros and cons to evetything.....the reality of being human is your body will break down over time....so if you think of your body like a machine then as you wear out parts over the course of life you can have them replaced...or not...its up to you.

They take away bone for it so then a fusion is difficult to do . If the fusion then can't be done my surgeon said your foot may have to come off ! That left me with yes I'll have a fusion. Mine has worked . It takes a lot ro get used to and is hard is you are a sporty person but sometimes you have no choice
