  • Death in June and Current 93 have both been deeply influential to me as an artist. They are two band which often come as a pair in people's minds, but here I outline the fundamental differences in their aesthetics, poetics, politics, and their visions of the occult.

I collaborated with David Tibet on a book, and I love both bands, but I remember before David committed to being part of the book, he said to me, "This can have NOTHING to do with hate". Obviously it didn't, but I think the misperception of DIJ has weighed heavy on David, and made him weary of people misinterpreting these things. Think about it. Most DIJ and C93 stuff delves deeply into the lexicon of darkness.

    • @goldalien2016
      @goldalien2016 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

If I'm not mistaken, David actually cut ties with Douglas and DIJ. If that's true, then that really shows what impact that weariness has had on him. To my knowledge, David's doing pretty good in life right now, and good for him (I've heard he was going through depression around the time of the Imperium album, which was also when he was working with DIJ), I just hope he's ok

@@nicknickson3650 Good to hear he's doing alright! I have yet to listen to the full album for "The light is leaving us all", but I've listened to "If a city is set upon a hill", and I really enjoyed that one. My first exposure to his music was with Imperium, and only becuase it was in a Warhammer 40k video, lol, but I was amazed by the variety of music in each album. Most of Imperium sounded creepy/depressing, but then you've got If a city is set upon a hill, which has many songs that are more somber, but almost in a peaceful way. It was like an adventure of some sort, discovering more about Current 93 and their music, it felt like diving into a well of dark water, not knowing where I'd end up, and resurfacing with a pearl in my hands. In the end, I'm glad I found out about Current 93, and even just neofolk in general. It helped me through some rough times, I'll admit

Very interesting video. Ive been listening to C93 loosely over the last few years but never dove really deep into them or David Tibet, this helped put things in perspective.
I have to recommend you some music from the swedish progg scene of the 1970s. It shares some interesting thematic similarities with C93 that i think you might appreciate.
They mixed the progressive rock sound of the time with traditional swedish folk music, which creates a really unique sound. Though, they are usually not nearly as dark and menacing as C93 often is
Merit Hemmingson and her albums ”Huvva! Svensk folkmusik på beat” and ”trollskog” are gems largely forgotten to time.

I realize that this is an older video, but it's still cool to come across a content creator talking about these bands. I agree with what you were saying about the difference between both bands and the reactions that you get when you put them on at a party haha! I really adore both these bands but I rarely come across others who are familiar with them. What do you feel about Swans? The Swans newest album is really good, but I haven't come across anyone that I can really talk to about it (These days I'm living in a very small mountain town). Im always a little afraid to listen to new music by these bands (that I love) especially after they haven't released anything for quite some time. It can either be incredible or incredibly disappointing.
It's also interesting that you mentioned Coil too. Recently I've been having a Coil revival, Coil and Einstürzende Neubauten. The cover of Soft Cells version of Tainted Love is so haunting on multiple levels. The video really makes it. I've always really loved Throbbing Gristle too, but I just really like the direction that Coil went in. There's a handful of wonderful bands that dwell under that umbrella, that unfortunately go unnoticed by these younger generations. That vein of occultism is almost wholly ignored at least in my experience. It's very sad. TOPY is an interesting subject unto itself. I'm definitely going to check out your channel.
If you haven't checked out King Dude yet than I highly recommend him, especially his record Full Virgo Moon. King Dude is varied in style (in a good way), but I definitely hear influences of these bands in his work, especially Death June.

Excellent commentary. I've always felt that Tibet and Pearce were on the same path but chose very different paces and noted very different things along the way.
Tibet is ephemeral and ultimately hopeful, while Pearce marches along stolidly and taking more note of where he was. I kind of get a vibe from Tibet's music that he's nearly discovering things as he goes along- almost like he's with the listeners and by no means is he in a hurry to take anyone anywhere.
Pearce, on the other hand, doesn't dance about with wonder. Some pain somewhere along the way won't let him go, and he will take whomever he can down into his labyrinth.
I love both but if I'm being honest, Pearce is my Pied Piper. Currently on a Nurse With Wound/Blind Cave Salamander kick, but I'll always go back to DI6 and Current93.

Very intelligent analysis. But although Tibet is a singer, a poet, an artist and a visionary, he is not a composer. When speaking about the music of Current 93, one should at least mention the wonderful Michael Cashmore who composed most of their songs in their classic period. Others have taken up that role since then, but not Tibet. On the other hand, Douglas writes the music of Death of June. The differences between the two bands are not only due to the different personalities and ideologies of Tibet and Douglas, but also to the different approaches to music between Douglas and the composers of C93's music.

I would definitely watch a video about them if someone made one. I will say, I saw Cut Hands, Bennett's project, open for Godlfesh and I was pretty into it. But that was pretty different from Whitehouse

It was also intended to reference the flower rapeseed or rape.
It wasn’t just Tiny Tim (rip) but also the royalties that supposedly World Serpent owed Boyd & Doug. I think that drew a line and broke up the family of all those bands on that label. Not even sure that Rice & Pierce are friends any longer last I heard but that was a few years ago now.

Do any of you remember a band on World Serpent named Primordia? They did an album & a CD-single, then disappeared when World Serpent folded. The first time I ever spent time with my wife, even before our first "date", we walked into a record shop in Greenwich Village, NYC and they were playing Primordia, around mid-1992. I bought what turned out to be their whole catalog, and we still listen to it.

I was a Club DJ for years and got to a point in the mid-90's where I wanted to play kind of the music I liked, for the kind of people I associate with. That happened to be noise & industrial fans, and older goths (as opposed to high schoolers into Marilyn Manson at the time). The only bars or clubs that would book us were gay bars, so I got to know and befriend many gay men & women over the years. Amongst homosexual men into experimental music, most were of the "bear" type he refers to, these weren't the twee Hollywood hairdresser type you see on TV. Death in June, and especially Coil are icons for a lot of these men, and the reference you made is a big part of that. It doesn't really apply to C93, not with anyone I ever met.

Really enjoyed this video. Though one thing I think you missed out on is how each artist talks about relationships.
So many Di6 songs are break up songs, Runes and Men, and the whole album Rule of Thirds seem to talk about loneliness and unsatisfaction and I think C93 often talks about love in a similar light with stuff like Gothic Love Song

I will say that while I don't particularly AGREE with Douglas P.'s aesthetics and his ties to people who share horrible ideologies, I still love the music and the WAY it's performed MOST of the time (he did go a tad too far on the funny-mustache-man-worshipping side with Brown Book, though). Plus, he handled the split with David quite immaturely based on what I have read of it.

I think Tibet's "Oh Im not into the second world war " speech is odd ~ particulary as his own song "Hitler as Kalki" definetely inspired by Esoteric hitlerist Savitri Devi he also wrote "One is the axis :anynonymous in glory "in "Punishment initiation" .,he told me he wasnt interested in Crowley yet had first editions of his paintings when i visited him in hastings.I think Tibet and Douglas made great music together but i think Tibet knew how to play the game ultimately and he threw Doug under the bus in order to win "Politically correct " vibes. i do like Current 93 particularly the years he worked with Rose and Doug and Freya .But with Death in June the music is on a higher plane.Thank you for having the guts to address these groups many wouldnt!.

"Thunder Perfect Mind" and "Black Ships Ate the Sky" are the longest (track length album length) and best examples of C93's neofolk side, in my opinion. 1994's "Of Ruine or Some Blazing Starre" is a shorter album (14 tracks, under an hour) and could be a great entry point to their neofolk sound as well (my favorite song is "The Teeth of the Winds and the Sea"). Make of that what you will!

One of the deepest c93 lyrics, though it may be out of context and just a fragment, to me was from the album black ships: "...and I do believe what I don't believe!".
