  • Today we're taking a look at Texas hate preacher Johnathan Shelley. He's been keeping busy laughing about slur words and storming local council meetings to rant about gay people. What a delight.

Seeing preachers like that make me really miss my pastor from my church growing up. He was so understanding and kind, even when I left the church, got tattoos, and a pink mohawk. He never once made me feel bad about anything. Even when I stopped believing he was still the same. A great example of a good Christian.

Growing up and learning history in the United States, this “pastor” reminds me of how white supremacists talked about people of color when segregation was going on and they were upset about the civil rights movement. I have a terrible feeling history is starting to repeat itself while queer people are just trying to be treated equally. Hearing things like this talked about publicly and unapologetically where I live deeply saddened me Emma. Thank you for reporting on this.

    That “crazy look” about him?
As a U.S. citizen, with fundamentalist Christian relatives in both Oklahoma and Texas, I can tell you, anecdotally, that the “crazy look” is something I can recognize on someone in a crowd and almost unfailingly correctly identify them as a “fundamentalist”…meaning they harshly judge people on Old Testament teachings, believe that cruelty is actually love of all because they are required by their faith to convert everyone to their way of thinking, is practically devoid of any semblance of understanding of the teachings of Jesus and their reasonable meanings…i.e. “love” is not generally associated with cruelty.

    • @kyleinthejar6829
      @kyleinthejar6829 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The look every Texan can identify lmao.
It literally got to the point where as kids, my brother and I would watch families outside our local church argue (which was quite frequently) and would be able to correctly identify which family member was a fundamentalist Christian and which one just didn’t want to be there 💀 It was a fucked up game now that I look back on it.

    • @katherinemcintosh7247
      @katherinemcintosh7247 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@kyleinthejar6829 😂🤣😂👏meh…I don’t know if that was a fucked up game. Seems like an interesting one. My sister and I would look around the sanctuary in the Church of Christ my cousins went to, looking for people paying attention to the sermon. We always paid attention to what was being said because, well, at our church thats just what was done, by our family. One of my cousins, as we got older, would use the time in church to paint her fingernails, which we found totally bizarre. I have one cousin who has that crazy look. Not the same family as the ones who went to the Church of Christ. None of that family had that crazy look, but there were plenty of people there who did. And they would speak, in earnest, about Jesus to anyone who would listen.
My sister and I used to analyze the sermon after church. We both knew for a fact that when the preacher pointed out that “there are sinners among us,” that he was talking about us, personally, because we were not Christians. We were unbothered by this and found that portion of the sermon never inspired us to become Christians either.😂🤣😂

I know there are people that do believe what I’m about to describe, but are the strict followers of the Old Testament (fundamentalists, I suppose) those who pedal slavery? I doubt every fundamentalist does, but it must be a higher ratio than the average population… the main problem is that they don’t even think for themselves, anybody who digs themselves out of that hole must be so greatly relieved, and those who don’t are comfortable living that way.

Omg my mother and her husband are this EXACT type of person!! They legitimately believe that they have a fundamental RIGHT to not have to hear about or see LGBTQ+ people ever. It's the most fucking insane thing I've ever witnessed. When they are watching a show, and a gay or lesbian couple are represented, they freak the FUCK OUT! Screaming and slamming their fists against the couch and going off about how "they don't want to see that disgusting shit and they're infringing on our rights by showing it in media" yada yada. They have no concept of "your rights end where my rights begin". They're also the Authoritarian types who legitimately believe that when anyone enters their domain, their "castle" (which is literally a 1200ft² single floor house), that those people automatically waive their constitutional rights. Right to privacy, to free speech, tenant rights, they refuse to acknowledge ANY of those exist for anybody EXCEPT themselves under their roof. It's actual lunacy and I've excommunicated them from my life as a result.

Hello Emma and listeners! I am from the disunited states of America. I was raised loosely in a poor, baptist, appalachian, family. The judging, shunning, and overall lack of anything close to human empathy I encountered growing up as a child actually caused me to read the bible more than a few times to try to figure out why the Jesus I had been taught of as a child and the Jesus I was taught of as a teenager were so different. The Jesus of my childhood was the one who loved all of the children of the world. If you don't know the rest of the song it goes on to list the races and tell how precious each one is. The message changed in my teens. Suddenly I was a sinner and would burn in hell if I didn't allow the church to symbolically drown me so I could be washed of my sins. ( Whatever those were at 12 or 13 yrs I hadn't even discovered masturbation yet.) As an undiagnosed person with adhd and autism I tended to take things quite literally.
I decided to try other religions and read up on several mainstream and even some more esoteric forms of the abrahamic faiths. None offered any proof to me of the existence of a personal deity. My childhood grooming by the baptist faith left me feeling empty without my imaginary friend Jesus there to console me. I'm 53 now and have been going to therapy to help overcome my cognitive biases that were partly my brains fault and partly my fd up childhood. I cannot lie and say it has been easy to disentangle the parasitic effects of organized religion but understanding the human mind and psychology has given me healthier coping mechanisms and insight into why we seem wired to will things to be that have no basis in reality. We can never completely escape religious indoctrination. Nor can we hope to eliminate its harmful effects on neurodiverse children who pay a higher price for not falling in line and questioning religious dogma, or worse, become fanatics ourselves because of black or white thinking patterns and expect others to believe as we do or else. Right now in the US things are pretty bleak looking.
Our youth are being crushed and invalidated by old men and women who have reaped the benefits of modern science to live longer healthier lives only to turn around and try to stop the inevitability of change occurring in their overextended lifetimes. If there is one thing I would share with younger people today who are disheartened by the horrible lack of basic human kindness is to get involved in politics and be the change you want to see. It sounds cliche yet not caring to make your basic human rights let alone the rights of all the other species on the planet the most important thing in politics seems just as callow as the openly greedy reacharound buddies who are deciding your fate today with their malice and blind greed.
Sorry if that sounded preachy. You need to know your voices matter and carry weight.
Thanks to Emma for being a rational voice in a mostly insane world. Be well all!

I'm glad you asked, Emma. I'm a trans woman living in Texas (happen to be English by birth too) and, uh, this place tests me on a regular basis. As my wife puts it, "poorly. we cope poorly." I did, in fact, hit my breaking point a couple of years ago. I went around stealing yard signs / flags of a certain presidential candidate. I also defaced a number of bumper stickers, right up until I was violently assaulted for doing so. Before *that* I lived in a city with a Confederate soldier monument (one of those ones erected in the 1900s by descendants of those soldiers) and I used to regularly throw coffee on it. I also once defaced that statue with my own blood during a particularly unhinged moment of protest. Nowadays I mostly console myself with videos like yours and with likeminded friends. I remind myself that these haters don't get to enjoy having two queer-as-fück partners like I have, and that we get to raise our child to be a kind and thoughtful human being, but I regularly worry about the kids being raised by fundamentalists.

Stealing & defacing private property is not "cool". It is illegal. Assault is also illegal. You should not, however, be confused as to why you were assaulted, or surprised that it happened.
Why should there not be monuments to Confederate war dead? There are monuments to Wehrmacht war dead. Respectful acknowledgement of the suffering and pain of those who gave their lives in war is called "empathy", and not - as you seem to believe - a blanket endorsement of the cause for which they fought.
Defacing a public monument with coffee is illegal, gauche, and entirely unproductive. Much like looting and then burning down the homes and businesses of the working classes (of all races and sexualities, no less) because a career criminal drug-addict OD'd, regardless of how black he was.

    • @horizonblack
      @horizonblack ปีที่แล้ว

Put up a shrine to whatever people you want; nazi, confederate, or otherwise. We will keep tearing them down.
A compromise would be to have a national confederate museum where the sculptures were moved to. They could be placed in context right next to the declarations of state defending slavery and next to the personal letters of those men that also defended the practice. The reason this has not been done? People don't want the truth - they hide it under bullshit arguments about knowing history.

"i listened to this for 15 minutes, and i have not heard the word jesus, or even love once, i heard sin, hellfire, sodomites, and satan". so my question was "what exactly are you worshiping?" he had no answer, and never brought it up again.
I was fortunate to have an inquisitive nature as child, when i was about 5-6 years old i asked two different priests, and several other people if pets went to heaven, annd i got two different answers, and i said wait minute you don't know do you? then my next questions were how do you know? to everything, and the response i got was...... "you shouldn't ask questions like that" or "you need to have faith". my mind was blown. I'm like WHAT?!? seriously? and at that point i stoped believing (to accept something as true without proof or evidence). to this day "belief" is not a word i use.

Great commentary, Emma. Yes -- my wife and I live in Texas... well, Austin, so it's not quite as bad as some other cities. But, yes, it's a daily trial. Do we leave and make it even more heavily dominated by people like this preacher. Or, do we stay while the Greg Abbott/Dan Patrick gang threaten to start a war with the US government -- we'd become refugees, if we managed to survive the violence that would occur. And, for that matter, where would we go in this dystopian mess of a country. I have to say, though, that Texas is NOT bright red. Every big city (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso) leans heavily blue, but the state has been so thoroughly gerrymandered that we can't overcome the less densely populated, but extremely large red areas. Please keep on... you do give us a modicum of hope for the future, because it's a pretty bleak present.

From texas and just graduated highschool. The short answer is: I cant cope with it. Its a very lonely feeling trying to make a friend and they turn out to be super conservative or ultranationalistic. I'm tired of seeing peers geared up to do what they believe is right, knowing they will fall into a rabbit hole and do really awful things. Whenever I speak up about subjects that I feel strongly about, I'm just a shrill feminist. A lot of people were disgusted at me. Makes you feel like an imposter.

Jasper Tennessee in Marion county..... Hell on earth. As a gay man it was a year and a half of no friends and no one to talk to. Every person in my school was a massive homophobic clown. Same with the town. And my dad who I was staying with...... His miserable bigoted coward religious " friend" outed me too...... It was hell. But it ended with the end of high school. It will end for you too. You will get though this miserable time. Try reaching out to the local socialist party to meet people who are normal and not bigoted. Your commentaries are fresh, energetic, and well researched with spot-on critiques. I see attributes of three of my children in you, both my daughters and my youngest son. Namely, being self-professed nerds, tech savvy, outspoken on topics you cover, and two belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. I applaud your courage and diligence in addressing some horrid (borrowed your nicer word, I would say asinine BS bigoted) dialogue and performances of the religious right. I lived in Texas for just shy of a year, and I was shocked and appalled to see that the stereotypes were so often true! Not all Texans, obviously, but it was BAD. People would walk up to me AT WALMART and do things like put their hand to my forehead, the other hand reached out to the sky, and yell for jesus to save me. This was at the very beginning of the pandemic, mind you, so... so much for 4-6ft. My favourite was the lady who put her hand on my shoulder and quietly said god would heal me like he healed her herpes. I don't know why it was such a challenge to leave a stranger alone to buy food. I was also given a 3 day notice to comply or vacate on the grounds that the lease says you can't disturb other residents... something that came out of a paragraph about noise, but I was told in person, by the landlord, that she "wouldn't feel comfortable living next to someone who was holding seances in the next room, either." I laughed because I thought it was a joke. It was not. I literally just like black clothes.

For about ten years I worked as a counselor as some church camps in Texas. For the most part they were open and welcoming (Methodist, for those curious) but we had some bad eggs in the counselor mix. People who said they were Christians, but acted like this buffoon. I did my best to go against what they were teaching their campers and to show the kids that there is nothing wrong with being LGBT+. I eventually bumped heads with some of the lead counselors and had several arguments about the nonsense some of the campers were being taught. Eventually there was a half victory. The camps were shut down, but for budget reasons not moral. So in the end we sort of won but not really but still a win?

I'm really looking forward to a breakdown of the whole "king james only" thing. I (American) was made to go to a southern baptist church that was like that. They preyed heavily on poor families who needed a source of free child care. They also didn't think women should be allowed to wear pants and needed to bow down to their husband's will, but tried to sugar coat it by saying "you just have to.. let him have his way ultimately". Being AFAB it was super fun. Also eventually realized I was bi and non binary, you can imagine their thoughts on queer and trans folk.
Oh, also one of my brother's friends stopped going because they also preached that interracial relationships were sinful and he was a mixed race kid. The grandkid of one of the major church people, who raised him, was also mixed race and I can't even imagine what his life was like.

Lev. was translated wrong billy graham. Refering to pedophilia. "Men shall not molest young boys."
Delete or reject the messages sent from the messenger of Malachi 3:1 and you reject Jesus Christ Herself and choose to die with the wicked.
Malachi 2 proves Malachi 3:8 is prophetic instruction for the thieving church leaders to bring back the money they were never supposed to take for ministering and God will end Covid. Every major church around the world knew this since August of 2020 but they LOVE MONEY so much they chose to kill everyone with Covid instead of returning it!
James 5:2 Rich people are NOT Christians and the wealth they selfishly kept to themselves will only be used as evidence to burn them.
The 2 witnesses are righteousness and judgement, not actual people. There is no ONE antichrist; it was made up by people that worship money.
Stay out of the fake churches or you will die with them and their lies. In order to be a church, the place must house people inside it. Otherwise it's another private money-making business serving satan and part of Babylon.
There is no such thing as rapture. Jesus comes back to rule. God's people are caught up spiritually...
Romans is not referring to Eunuchs where one partner is transgender.
🏳️‍🌈 Eunuchs that are born that way are transgender. It's even in the Bible. Yes, the bible was written by bigoted men and is way outdated and was changed and should be thrown out. But even Jesus spoke about transgender people. Eunuchs made that way by others were abused (it doesn't happen to everyone that is abused). Those that choose to live like Eunuchs FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN are bisexual people that choose partners of the same sex characteristics but opposite in regards to gender. Notice, God PREFERS for people to be in LGBT relationships.
Eunuchs are same sex couples. One partner is transgender. Transgender is when someone is born with a gender opposite the sex characteristics normally associated with that gender. God made us male or female, determined by gender, located in the brain.
Your gender is located in your brain and determined at birth. I have an identical twin sister that is female in gender. I am male in gender.
I am Elijah of Malachi 4:5-6 and that means any discrepancies in the bible are ultimately decided by me. Plus, it states in Deuteronomy that nobody was castrated back then. And that doesn't make sense anyhow. No one is born castrated and no one is born making the decision to be celibate. But, that is what God wanted the lying preachers to think so they wouldn't take it out of the bible. Intersex people still have one gender or another because gender is located in your brain.
And Acts 3:22-23 says it will come to pass that anyone that fails to listen to me will be utterly destroyed from among the people. So anyone that says different than this won't be here much longer. It's everyone's choice.
Anyone teaching the LIE of monetary tithing or getting paid in any way to minister will also die with the wicked.
      Peter 2:9 says we are ALL ministers . . . .
Jesus was transgender and will return as a woman.....
Remember, Malachi 3:8-12 is talking to the thieving church leaders. It's the answer to end Covid and every major church around the world has known this since August of 2020 but they LOVE MONEY so much, they INTENTIONALLY CHOSE to kill everyone instead of returning it. My preaching will lead to a universal monthly income for everyone. If church leaders dont repent, they won't be here to see it. Their choice....

It's because Christians in America have become lukewarm. They fornicate all the time and then act like God will give them something if they just go to church once on Sunday. And a lot of them can't even do that. So God turned his back on them, and now they're freaking out. Instead of attacking atheists, they need to repent and do what God says to do. I used to belong to a KJV only church. Believe me I tried to explain to them how it didn’t make sense, but they’re stubborn.
Let me tell you about Christian love at this church. That pastor had to resign because he was caught doing something “ inappropriate”, with his own daughter. Anyway, a few months later the new pastor actually preached on, “let him without sin, cast the first stone “. And,”Judge not, lest you be judged “. I mean every Bible verse about forgiveness. Then that ousted pastor goes up to the front of the church. And the congregation is asked to go up in Christian love and embrace him. Well, you can just imagine how much sense that makes. They can twist things and manipulate the Bible to fit their own agenda. I think it’s important to add that the daughter and her mother left the church. There was no embracing or understanding for them. Crazy right?!

I have a lot of Christian Facebook friends from growing up (I grew up in a conservative Christian church in Kansas which is a slightly less toxic version of Texas honestly). I've had a few conversations around how they aren't being loving by posting hateful things on Facebook. Generally, they come back with the argument that the "loving" thing to do is to warn people that they're going to hell or something along those lines. I've actually managed to then convince a few of them that angry Facebook posts are in fact not the way to accomplish that if that's what they want to do, but I don't think I'll ever convince any of them that homosexuality isn't evil. At least maybe I've had some effect making the conversation a bit less harmful, or at least that's my hope

I think it might be worth pointing out that sending someone to hell isn't very loving. Hell is what deconverted me.

Homophobic Evangelicals really can change their minds, Josh. I did, and so have a great many others.

I suppose I want very clear based on responses. I know some homophobic evangelicals do change their minds. I did after all. I'm saying that I'm doing the best I can through Facebook which isn't the place to really have those conversations to really change people

The more you dig into christian/catholic demographic the more hate and terrible people you uncover. The more you dig into atheist demographic the more love, peace and moral people you uncover.

My experience has been, the deeper you dig into any population, the more people of all kinds you find.
Almost as though people are just...people.

@@arcadiaberger9204 look up any statistics. Christian communities have higher rates of murder, hate crimes, divorces, teen pregnancy, repeat teen pregnancy, pedophilia, tortures on prisoners ect.. First ones go into hundreds of times the amount of atheist communities. The religious community (in general ofc) is this shown in the video. This man represents this community

Sending love and hugs to anyone having a rough time. You are not alone.
Find a good doctor, call a friend, and do something kind for yourself. You can do this!

It's very easy to tell the difference between pasta and a pastor. Pasta belongs in my belly, a pastor belongs in the past. Hence the name.
