Thank you for taking time to do a comprehensive update of your fig orchard. I watched the whole video and must say you are extremely skilled . Would love to watch a whole orchard tour. I did a lot of research on growing figs as espalier but found that they are hard to maintain as they don’t produce fruits in their spurs like apples or pears. However, I have seen a huge fig tree in Southampton university England Fan trained. Cheers Vinny
Thank you. My tree is just a fun project. Bottom espalier part was originally shaped like a heart. Main goal is to observe top growth. Espalier in figs can be very productive, in the east, that is the preferred form.
Thanks, my first video two days ago was too long, so I was hoping to make a shorter version, and this one turned to be even longer but no editing, lol.
@@backyardfigs thanks for response. Wasn’t trying to correct you I just was blown away by how great that fig looked and wanted to add it to my wish list. Great fig orchard 💪
Excellent collection!! I give you an A+ I have several of these but would appreciate getting some more cuttings of other varieties. Do you have a way that I can contact you if you have cuttings available?
Do you bring your trees out of dormancy early in your basement grow room before bringing them outside? I am starting and also have a grow room (not as nice) so was asking what you think i can do? I have little ones and and few 3y old trees. Hoping to get fruit next year
Yes, I do. Take a look of my older videos and observe their progress early in the season. Depending on where you leave and how long is your season, also what varieties you have, will determine when you can awaken your trees. Next season you can tweak the date if needed. I am in SE Michigan, zone 6b, and usually awaken mine sometime in February.
@backyardfigs okay great. I am in Connecticut zone 7. I have mostly early varieties . I have large LED grow lights in my basement grow room (I'm improving before feb) .. what lights do you use? Also do you use heat in the grow room when you 1st take out of dormancy?
@@Alv12594Most of the trees in the orange section were in the grow room in my basement. Rest were in a garage. I have older videos demonstrating this. Thanks for asking.
Thank you for asking. I will make a video about white bags function. They provide many benefits, currently they preserve water evaporation when hot. if to rainy, by closing them they prevent excessive water saturation of soil media, and finally lower media temperature.
Love your orchard. I was wondering what your fencing is made of? Are those 2"x2"s and 4"x2"s. Also, is that a plastic mesh? I have animals in my area I am afraid will attack my new fig trees. Any advice on that? Thanks
I've been asked many times, and hopefully soon will make a video explaining the built up of the cage. In short, those are round 2''x2'' posts, draped with deer netting.
How would you compare Adriatic JH (or any Adriatic type fig) and Col de Dame Blanc? I heard they are very similar tasting only that Col de dame blanc tastes better and it better overall since they look so similar? Is it worth getting both? Thank you and you have a wonderful collection 👌
To my taste buds, CdD Blanc has more unique flavor, almost intriguing as is different than many other varieties. Thick pulp texture, intense berry flavor. But it is later ripening, so without head start would bee more challenging to grow to perfection. Adriatic JH is also very good with nice balance of sweetness and acidity. It is also earlier. To me, they are different enough to justify growing both. This year I will have a better picture of adriatic types, having more varieties to compare.
I’m just curious about the white plastic bags you have on some of your trees. How does water drain out? You have a beautiful collection and I enjoy watching your videos. I love how you treat each tree as an art piece that you sculpture to the look that you want. Your love for your trees is apparent.
Main orchard, with watering can (collected rain water), other area with hose, filtered tap. I do find that my best results are achieved with manual watering, because of my setting. I will make video explaining the reasons why. Thanks for asking.
I have two 275 gal totes connected. IDon't recall last time running out of rain water. it's been quite wet last couple of seasons. Having rain almost every other day, I wish that I was in Phoenix lol. @epigeneticnerd4244
Are you sure your white marseilles isn't a Tena? Because I have both varieties and your white marseilles looks like my Tena with the long finger leaves.
Thank you for commenting, you are correct ( just confirmed by looking at some pics from Ourfigs ). I got this tree in 2018 from Telly's, reputable local nursery with a label that has a nice short story about Thomas Jefferson and his favorite fig variety, WM. I did read some thread on Ourfigs about BM fmv free from pro fig that I have ( which turned out to be Tena), but not carefully enough, and assumed that this two are synonyms. Tomorrow I will change name on the label to Tena, and correct staff at Telly's, if they still have it. Thanks again!
My highest compliments to you. Your videos demonstrate mastery. Thank you for taking the time and effort for sharing your expertise.
Thank you much!
Great video, thanks for sharing 👏
Thank you for watching.
I am surprised you can grow these figs so far up north. Also, surprised they grow in the pots for sooo many years. Good examples
I love your videos!
You should show your winterization process -- I'm in the same zone and would be interested to see what you do
Thanks for a suggestion. I will do so.

Great video

Fig Orchard Tour July 11 2024
26:45 is this one that you raves about the Adriatic JH or a strawberry something. I got a little lost there.
My mistake, I meant to say Strawberry Verte. Didn't know how to correct that on video, thanks for correcting.
@@backyardfigs thanks for response. Wasn’t trying to correct you I just was blown away by how great that fig looked and wanted to add it to my wish list. Great fig orchard 💪
I notice your weed barrier is white instead of the normal black. I would have thought since you are so far north, you would have wanted the black.
@bosquebear1 Black ground cover would work, too. I am just trialing first with orange one first. It has faded to this lighter color after three years
Hello my friend I live in Michigan too. Do you have any cutting for sale? Let me know. Thank you.
Excellent collection!! I give you an A+

Thanks! As of now, I do not sell cuttings. I like to root cuttings myself, and confirm variety by leaves, if possible.
🎉if u can make a video of the new varrieties for 2024 ??
Some are being rooted right now, I will try to show progress by the end of the season.

Can you tell me what you're using to wrap the pots to turn them white? Where did you get that material?
Hi, many have asked this question, I will explain in a separate video.
how big are your pots? and what fertilizer do you use?
Hi, mostly 7 gal grow bags. Several larger trees in 10gal, younger in 5gal. I had posted a fertilizing video after this one.
Do you store them in garage in winter? Or have a green house?
