  • Between 1935 and 1945 a large dam was built across the River Derwent in Derbyshire, England. As a result, the picturesque villages of Derwent and Ashopton were submerged. This video shows the remains of Derwent village in January 1996 during a period of drought.

Can still remember my Auntie Anne telling me of this when I was a kid. She lived in New Mills, Chesire, and would speak of her mother hearing ghostly bells from the old church, and also her mother recalled the steeple of the church standing. Haven't been up there for many moons, thanks for showing me some old memories. I can't recall which of the industrial towns the dams supplied mind you.

Many thanks. I understand that the dams were built to supply Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.

We have similar drowned areas in Washington State. There are many huge hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River. Old settlements were moved or razed. Structures burned, leaving only foundations. Train tracks that go nowhere. The resulting lakes never empty, but you can still see roads that go downhill into lakes and vanish. In the higher mountains we have storage reservoirs for irrigation. Trees and structures were removed there too. During low rain and snow years, lakes do get low enough to see the land as it was before it was flooded.

Many thanks for your detailed comment. It's great to hear of these similar situations, and there's something magical about a road disappearing into the water!

Many thanks - it certainly made me think about the past when I was wandering through the village, taking that video.

Many thanks. It was filmed in January 1996 and was the result of the severe drought of 1995.

Very good and interesting film. Surprised to see the film was made in January 1996 as l can't remember a severe drought the previous summer but I guess it's a age thing. Thanks very much for sharing this.

Apparently, very dry conditions appeared during the summer and affected Yorkshire in particular. I've just found a Government report on this at www.parliament.uk/documents/post/pn071.pdf

Lovely area, but for me it's always tinged with sadness looking across the water; the historical & beautiful lost villages, people forced out've their homes; I hate that part've it. *Fascinating to see what's visible when the dam's low, thanks :)

Good to hear that you enjoyed the videos. I think it's called the Derwent Valley Water Board Valve House and is the only complete building left on the ruined site. Some information on a similar one can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/30120216@N07/15007264643

    It gets a very brief mention at about 2:00 in Part l. It's a long-disused water valve-house.

Yes. In all, the remains of 285 people were removed and re-interred in nearby Bamford Churchyard.

What happened to the bodies and gravestones from the graveyard? Were they exhumed before the flooding?

2021, and I am wondering about that too! It seems terrible to flood grves, as it is not such a long time, since the last burial must have taken place? ...old Tich ( from Scotland, where there is never drought, due to all the rain we have )
