    How exciting to be with your daughter when your granddaughter was born! Congratulations! That little coming home home outfit will be perfect as the weather cools over the coming month. I have done the same mix up forgetting to change needles- so frustrating. I made MONSTER BUM. Pants for one of my granddaughters and they were fun to make- I think you will enjoy making the rest of the baby set. I find most young parents are asking for earthy colours and gender neutral items for their babes. Love your Lento. Mine is already to go but I need to finish my Elton (Joji Locatelli) and The Stephen West MKAL is coming up- yikes! Also knitting the Bean and Olive sweaters (Andrea Mowry) for granddaughters turning 6 and 8 in the next few months. Never enough time. Your shawl will be lovely! Thanks for the discussion about weight and knitting above gauge- so interesting!

      Thanks, Jennifer! I really wanted to make an Elton this summer and then never got around to it. It took me a little bit to get going on the lace portion of the shawl, but I'm rolling along now.

      @@northwestknitting5993 The Elton is taking forever and I am doing it in black mohair and stained glass yarn which is charcoal based- yikes! I had to get light coloured needles to be able to see the stitches and sunny knitting in the day time. However it is very pretty.

    Congratulations on the new granddaughter! I read The Uncommon Reader this year and loved it. It was a quick and fun read. I have a sweater's worth and more of Jamieson and Smith and you are so right about the candy. I enjoyed your podcast having just found you. Also enjoying the fall weather here in southern New England after a terribly hot and humid summer.

    Hello! Congratulations on your new granddaughter. You will have lots of happy hours knitting baby gifts. I have watched your podcast from the beginning and look forward to every podcast. Your knitting journey mirrors my own and it's so fun to see all your yarn finds and knitted garments. You do such a nice job with yarn subbing and fitting your sweaters. They all look so nice on you. Have you ever thought of doing a split hem on your pullovers? I prefer my sweaters to give me a long look instead of a wide look. I don't need to add bulk. :D Enjoy your book recommendations too and will look for a copy of today's recommendation. Have you read The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss? I've read it 3x. I also enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry this summer by Bonnie Garmus. It was so good. I also enjoy reading anything by Wallace Stegner and Jane Smiley. Right now I'm knitting some pumpkins using the Simple Rib Pumpkin pattern by Mandy Pertroski. It's a free pattern on Ravelry. I love Fall. I live in the Inland NW, so it's fun to hear you talk about where you live. It's familiar. Take care!

    Congratulations on the new grandbaby 😊. I also enjoyed that blog post of Albiona. I've ordered some Nutiden to try her Nostalgic Sweater Coat, but I plan on maybe mid-thigh length. As for shawls...a few of my superwash ones just keep stretching and stretching, so I recently tried one using Holst Supersoft. It's so light, and I love the texture....I'm a rustic girl at heart, that's for sure. I will be knitting the Stephen West MKAL using a rustic Canadian wool...looking so forward to it 😀

    Like you I’ve had children and never seen a birth but I was present at my grandson’s birth on Christmas Day and it was incredible, I wanted to fall on the floor because I felt like it was a Holy moment; life entering the world that was not there 2 minutes ago. It is the same when someone passes, a Holy moment when they depart.

    Congratulations on you new Granddaughter! I hope you enjoyed your time in the BayArea. I live in San Jose. Funny I was in Portland area Labor Day weekend. Visiting my Mom and family. I had a wonderful visit as well. Your Lento looks amazing. It’s on my knit list. I have some beautiful yarn from The Farmers Daughter fibers. It’s apart of her Indigenous collection. I want to put it with a Woolen spun yarn. Maybe Brooklyn tweed. Or something from the Wooly Thistle. Would love a recommendation if you have a favorite fingering from The WT

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teresa, I think woolen spun might work a lot better than worsted. The difference between Loft (fingering weight and woolen spun) and the Jaggerspun Heather (also fingering, but worsted spun) is significant to me. I'd like to try more of Farmer's Daughter fibers. So far I've used Pushkin and it is nice and plump.
      I'll think about what's my favorite fingering yarn and get back to you!

    A sustainable woolen mill in Wyoming is one that I highly recommend. They are Mountain Meadow Wool Mill. They use only locally sourced wool. Even tell you which sheep ranch the wool came from

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linda, thanks for the recommendation. I just had time to glance at some of their offerings, which are mostly merino with beautiful colors. Quite a selection. They must be huge. Then noticed that they also have a yarn made from the Lincoln breed of wool which is the same breed as some of the yarn I got from my son's mother-in-law. I'll definitely look into this mill. It looks like they do everything on site, which is so unusual in the States.

      I love Mountain Meadow! I was in their yarn club. It’s a great way to get to know their beautiful yarn. I joined right before 2020,their yarns are processed in their mill, so cool! They spin yarns for local wool, and I’m sure some yarn companies contract with them. I found out about an awesome knit designer who does amazing colorwork, Varian Brandon, who was a guest on their vlog.

      Thank you, Kathy! I’ll listen to this soon. I read Raw Material: Working with Wool in the West by Stephany Wilkes a few years ago and there was a section on the ecology of sheep/wool ranching in southeast Oregon that was
      fascinating. Very detailed in the science of it, and I remember that part of the book more than any other. I didn’t know until one of your comments that superwash merino uses excess water in processing.

      @@kat6671 I feel like a beginner at all of this myself. I have been finding the names of more superwash yarns that are GOTS certified, meaning they are using environmentally sound methods of processing, and want to explore those. I just ordered Raw Material. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Love your Lento! I found the sleeves and body length also crept up on a pullover I knit a while ago. I've knit other cardis and pullovers with fingering and mohair with no issues. So I think it was a tension issue for me. Remember, mohair/silk has no stretch.

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's so interesting. I'm curious to see what happens after I block it. In one of my other mohair sweaters I held it double with alpaca, and I think the mohair has kept the alpaca from stretching out too much, but it has been wonderfully drapey.

    Congrats again on your granddaughter! Great to see you when you were down here in CA. And thanks for sharing the piece about knitting above gauge -- I've been eyeing the ranunculus and although I don't think I'd go with fingering, I've been wondering what kind of DK/worsted yarn to choose because the gauge is still so loose! I think reading that will be helpful.

    I found the link to your podcast while looking at Lento sweater. I love yours in Loft. I’m trying to knit it from stash and what mohair I have is only one or two balls in each color. I have some felted tweed Aran and might swatch with this I also have some old maiden aunt yarn that might replicate the fuzzy as well. I will definitely look at A Mclochlin blog. Congratulations on your new grand babe. I am all set to cast on the Lento and do not want the doubled knit neck. What cast on did you do and then did you just half the number of initial ribbed stitches? It has been a while since I have watched your vlogs and you are doing great!

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Lisa! Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure I did the Old Norwegian cast on, which I believe is the same as the German Twisted cast on. And then I did just knit about half the rows the designer has for the collar.
      The neck is quite loose with that cast on, which is okay because of combination of a rustic wool with mohair. With superwash, this cast on might be way too loose.
