What FOODS to eat to prevent AUTOIMMUNE disease? | ft. Dr. Akil Palanisamy | Dr Pal

  • I am discussing with Dr. Akil Palanisamy (combined degree in both Ayurveda and Allopathy) why there’s been such an explosion in autoimmune disease and how certain insults in our modern-day society-like heavy metals, pesticides, poor diet, and chronic stress-could be to blame.
    Autoimmunity is becoming increasingly prevalent today, affecting an estimated 300 million people worldwide. As one of the fastest-growing areas of chronic illness, more and more individuals are seeking help to get to the bottom of what’s driving their symptoms. The conventional medical approach often fails to identify the root cause of autoimmune conditions, leaving patients dependent on immunosuppressant drugs or embarking on an extensive journey of searching for answers.
    Dr. Akil is a renowned Integrative Medicine practitioner who combines conventional medicine with holistic approaches like Functional Medicine and Ayurveda. He is a Harvard graduate and received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Akil completed his residency training at Stanford University and a fellowship in Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona. He is the Department Chair for Integrative Medicine at the Sutter Health Institute for Health and Healing (IHH), where he also serves as IHH Physician Director for Community Education and leads educational initiatives and programs.
    In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Akil is a well-known author, speaker, and educator. He has authored two books, The Paleovedic Diet: A Complete Program to Burn Fat, Increase Energy, and Reverse Disease and The TIGER Protocol: An Integrative, 5-Step Program to Treat and Heal Your Autoimmunity.

    Sir, following your diet advice. Helping me to have a good lifestyle.
    My wife has been suffering from Uveitis (auto immune). The series of events are covid (delta wave) during pregnancy, c section delivery and primarily covisheild vaccine.
    It will be really helpful if you can share which foods can be helpful to control the inflammation. Currently she is on 5 tablets of mycept 500 and undergoing treatment in LV Prasad, Hyderabad.

      Palaya Soru is a great fermented food, it will surely help reduce inflammation. Plus, include curd in the diet, home-made one, if possible.
      Add fiber aka salads.
      Reduce the frequency of outside processed foods and junk foods.
      Avoid Red Meat, have chicken in a while, but prefer fish.
      This is the basics. Hope your wife gets off the pills. Good luck.

      Be mindful of what you eat and exercise and you’ll be off soon. I have psoriasis and arthritis both. But from one year I am 90% in relief.
      How,
      Intermittent fasting,
      Fiber,
      Curd,
      Ghee (good fat),
      Olive Oil (good fat),
      Fruits,
      Green leafy vegetables,
      Fish (if you’re non vegetarian),
      Flax seed or Algae Omega 3 (if you’re vegetarian),
      And walk daily one hour non-stop, meaning once you start no taking breaks. In the starting you won’t be able to but sooner or later you’ll reach the pace.
      And, lessen tea and coffee.
      And if this seems tough, just think your life depends on it.
      That’s how I’m coping daily. Stay strong. 💪

    Your telling the fact. But my GI doctor said diet has nothing to do with my crohn's. Food doesnt cause it. I find it confusing. I had crohns when i was 12. I had lots of fast food since young and stressed due to my first public examination that time. Can this crohn's be reversed.

      Doctors are not trained that well in nutrition. Any illness can be greatly improved if one follows this kind of diet. Eat low carb, decent protein and lots of veggies and fruits diet. Take buttermilk everyday as probiotics and onion garlic sauted with lunch. Sleep 8 hrs and 1 hr pranayam + meditation.

    My mother has this autoimmune condition called Sjogrens and this disease attacks the glands in the human body. And she can't take many of the food because of lack of secretion of salaiva. Her disease has advanced over years since 2013. Right now her teeth, kidney are damaged. She is maintaining her health only through steroids and if we decrease the mg her skin turns into rash. Can you educate us somehow. Thank you in advance

    Another great episode.. Love to see different perspectives. I had one question.. The guest said idli and Dosa are fermented foods. But we heat it and eat it. Would that not kill the good bacteria?

    • @AkilPalanisamy
      @AkilPalanisamy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes it does but a little are left behind which is better than nothing

    • @Tully70
      @Tully70 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes - live microorganisms may not be available in idli/dosa. But, the benefits of fermentation is already available in them. So better than non-fermented food.

    Hi Dr Pal, your videos as also that of your guests' are very valuable and eye opening. I wonder whether the cooking process would destroy the good bacteria in idli batter, etc. If yes, how then would these foods be able to add good bacteria to our gut? Thanks.
