I started riding 1969 which was a magical time for motorcycles sales and tons of riders on the streets and tracks. I saw the first big drop of riders in 1980s but it is the safety nannies and control freaks who want to decide what is good for you.
At 70 years old I'm closer to the end than the middle of my riding career, however I'll go out with my boots on twisting the throttle. I'm still do drag and land speed racing as well street riding and touring.

As a copper who also happens to ride bikes including dirt bikes with 3 kids who also ride. Not all of us just want to rape and pillage the good people.
Being in a town in the middle of nowhere, I encourage the kids and adults to ride sensibly along the shoulder and just walk their bike over the road and once out of the town so out of everyone’s way and risk, let it rip!
I think it’s bullshit that the govt can’t let kids ride bikes in the bush away from houses etc in the local forest or national park…
Perhaps Alistair who now identifies as Angus needs to remember not all cops are c&@ts haha!

I think it's great that you use discretion. It's lost on the young coppers, or trained out of them. Profession aside, people who live and work outside of the cities are pretty much better rounded people. Thumbs up fella!

    • @blackers10
      @blackers10 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CRFLAus its not trained out of them. Just a perspective and way of thinking. I would certainly agree that many coppers who are in outer areas have a different outlook on many things as you aren’t dealing with strangers every day. You are dealing with your community and people you know or see around town.

    Hello Mark & Angus.
    Hope you are both well.
It’s Fathers Day here in the UK on 18th June. Would you mind giving my old man (Paul Croucher) a shout-out? He is a big fan of yours and we both regularly enjoy “chatting shit” after listening to each episode.
Dad has a Himmy, a Cross-Tourer, and a Piaggio 125cc daily-hack. We enjoy riding together whenever we can; constrained only by living 5 hours apart.
In the spirit of friendly-banter you might call out his recent habit of laying his bikes down on the driveway after a long ride … I suppose they deserve a rest too, and picking them up again keeps him fit :-).
All the best to you boys. Keep on keeping on.
    Many thanks, from Tristan

@1:20 buying bikes for testing then flogging it off, rinse and repeat. Have a chat to BIG ROCK MOTO in the states, he is doing exactly that. Maybe you can ask him how that's going financially etc etc. He actually mentioned that the Ducati dealership in the states refuses to sell workshop manuals as they don't want people to wrench on their own bikes. That alone and the fact that they are bl**dy expensive puts me right off Ducati.
Anyway, great idea about the bike, test, flick idea.

The Christmas Truce has become one of the most famous and mythologised events of the First World War. But what was the real story behind the truce? Why did it happen and did British and German soldiers really play football in no-man's land?
Late on Christmas Eve 1914, men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches.
The following day, British and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. After Boxing Day, meetings in no man's land dwindled out.
The truce was not observed everywhere along the Western Front. Elsewhere the fighting continued and casualties did occur on Christmas Day. Some officers were unhappy at the truce and worried that it would undermine fighting spirit.
After 1914, the High Commands on both sides tried to prevent any truces on a similar scale happening again. Despite this, there were some isolated incidents of soldiers holding brief truces later in the war, and not only at Christmas.

Now an adult is ticketed for allowing a child ride a bicycle with out a helmet. Crazy. I am not a fan of the way laws have gone. But go ahead a feed your child the highest addictive drug in the world every day (sugar) and there is no law. I don't want a law for that, but even parents can't make a knowledgeable decision to ration the drug. And don't get me started on the second addictive drug with anti boredom for kids.

I think there was a small bump in the downward trend helped by the hipster-with-classic-bikes-especially-Japanese 60s, 70s, and Kawasaki W650/Bonneville boom..Cafe bikes, built on TH-cam 'etc., but other than that, I see a decline everywhere. Same for a whole bunch of things teens did in the 70s, from playing guitars to DIY electronics, sailing boats, hotting up old cars etc., etc. Drinking beer, playing footy etc. etc. but Angus&s story is very powerful..about the way people approach things now. If there is any possibility that they leave window of vulnerability exposed, they&d rather tear the whole building down. I sold one of my precious two bikes last week.^just in case^...*insurance complications...and also, pollution rules are spoiling a lot of nice bikes. And punishing classic little bikes ..it is OK to drive a huge 4WD diesel or EV with a giant battery that will go to the tip, but it isnot profitable for bike makers to make a lot of cool bikes anymore.

People are just going top say .....That said, where are those visceral things now? People and authorities want inertia and continuity and that super-fund has to keep rolling forward..and we killed the federal pension in the name of super..so thanks it.

So here is a question. Let's say in the last 30 years, you have bought multiple bikes , but really developed a long term relationship with two of them. But both times, the bike the longer I owned it, the less I liked it. Both ended in horrific. Would you stop riding, as the bikes I have owned all have ended with disappointment.
    End of that question.
    Next question.
The first question relates with relations with women!?. Been married twice and dated 40 plus other women. I have stopped the hobby of women, as my bikes have never let me down. Always, even in bad times, they made an experience. Maybe because I buy them new and use them till the end of there use, but some have been sold, as a woman came into my life. Sad I do that. I won't do it again. I am a motorcyclist for life till I have to ride a Honda Trail 125! Or a KLR 650! Or a Himalayan! I feel like Steve Martin in the movie " The Jerk". Keep adding other things I need in life. Lol.
Women are now just a side hobby and don't invest in that hobby. Maybe guns and growing Marijuana, ooowwwwwh and playing billiards. Ya! I good for now. I like investing my time and money in hobbies that are solid return on my investment. Love motorcycles. Had to put you guys on pause and take an 80 mile ride on my Concours just now and got back and wrote this as I am commenting like a little girl talks!

From the US, after a little over 50 years riding, the trend went from little to bigger, bigger, bigger since the 1970s to now getting smaller, smaller, and smaller. I have loved my full dress Electriglide, but the actual majority of riding is around town.....errands. I find that my Vespa 150 gets the most of my riding time, and the Harley sits unless heading for the horizon. Around town, a 300-pound bike is a lot more fun to run around on rather than the 900-pound one. $6,000 vs $25,000, 90mpg vs 40mpg, and when it's 90 degrees out, all that big, v-twin heat shoots up to your nads while the step through is cooling. As far as the horizon goes, my 33 year old daughter just got her cycle license, and we are heading for a week on the back roads with a pair of 150 scooters (Vespa and a Lance). Sturgis went from a rally to a fashion show. Things like the Small Bore festival, Scooter Cannonball, Amerivespa Rallies are just bringing it back closer to the roots. The thing that seems to be pretty much gone is a tarp, sleeping bag, and a old, cheap bike travel. My daughter's and my upcoming trip will be that. Not that I can't afford a nice hotel, but there is something about that simplicity that makes it a true experience.

Reason we don't have another generation of motorcyclists , we have to much estrogen in our boys and young men today, along with the pussy men we have today. I attempted to teach my second wife's kids to ride a skate board when they were around 7 years old and all three were stating it was to dangerous. I owned a motorcycle and one child would not get on, one would only go 200 yards and want to get off and the third one was wanting me to go faster and go all around town. But he did not have the coordination to skate board and barley had enough to ride a bike. I attempted to have them on there bike do a jump with a plank of wood and a spare tire. Non would engage in that activity. We have raised our kids to be soft and take no chances. Three boys, twin 14 year Olds and a 16 year old and none have broken a bone. What does that say. Most adults would congratulate me, I am worried! I haven't seen a cast of a child for years. They take no chances. So, you are correct Mark, they are not pushed to think for themself and work trough anything anymore.

Things change, nothing stays the same. Motorcyclists will always be around. The shift I've seen in 20 years is everything used to be dirt bike or sports bikes of all capacities. Dirt bikes are still very popular (probably still top the sales charts) but I can't remember the last time I saw a Fireblade on the road. EV is lagging, it will happen but I reckon we got ages yet and I won't ride an electric bike stick that up your ought! Motorcycle culture has definitely changed. Lots of ethnicities getting into it now but seems like suburban and city riding is the go. I remember going to the Reefton Spur back in the the 2000's and there'd be a hundred or more bikes there going mental, a death every other weekend. Nowadays there's hardly anyone. Anyways, Ala...er Angus, welcome to Costco, I love you.

Unfortunately I think you may be right, us being the last generation of bikers.
Motorbikes were once a cheap form of transport but now it is not with cars being ever so more fuel efficient etc
With governments making it ever more harder to get into biking as a youngster it is only the older generation that can either afford it or passed their test when it was simpler. In the uk a youngster may have to take 4 tests before they are 24 to have a full licence , all making it prohibitively expensive & enough to put anyone off. It's not even that electric bikes will be the saviour as they are so damm expensive too.
The only way bikes will continue is if the government's stop screwing us over and stop making it harder and harder to make it viable.

. Guys,, this is not rocket science.. it's all about influence... and also about what sells. Young people are doing exactly what we " our generation" have influenced them to do. If riding is to continue like our generation has, it must be influenced by us.. When the manufacturers want change, change will happen. I am not a fan of efi... if people want it, people will get it. The people in the states don't have our problem ..

Im 34 and have always been into bikes, but its just bloody expensive between the bike, maintenance and gear. Housing and cost of living are way up, but not wages so bikes just getting cut out honestly.

Hi Vise, I haven't ridden for a long time, a very long time. Am test riding a brand new Himi, on Monday june 5. Will be wearing hi vise on the day, will probably do the same for a while until I get fairly used to the bike and feeling comfortable on it. I am a bicycletourist, and have never stopped wearing hi vise since I came back to it in 2016. What is wrong with wearing it , other then looking like a newby rider, or looking like a dick, I actually want to survive.

It's not about if you want to wear it or not, or if it is safer. It's about government overreach. I am for wearing bright colours when cycling, you're a sitting duck doing 20kph when people are driving doing 80.. They are proposing every vehicle to have running lights on. Why? To reduce the road toll. Imagine getting booked for not having your headlights on on a bright summers day. That's right on our doorstep, they call it clown world.

Funny you mention him ! I love his excitement and the way he rides !
I saw him eight or nine years ago at the TT … he was always on the back wheel ! Probably not the fastest way of racing … but fun for him (and the spectators) .
