A B3 & a Leslie cabinet was the absolute bomb on the 60s & 70s in pop music. Every major music act in those decades used them. Surprisingly, they were never sold as a package by either Hammond or Leslie. When the end came for these big, difficult to transport pieces, musicians struggled to maintain that classic sound, but no electronics company could precisely & successfully emulate it. Sure miss this great duo. It's the sound of an era.
You 2 are great ! Thank you. I am alone and depressed as hell in the middle of nowhere in Alaska. This music helps to brighten my mood. I assume y'all know about Delvon Lamar Organ Trio outta Seattle__ thank you for keeping the Leslie's & Hammond alive & kickin !
Bravo! I only just read about the Leslies and yours is such a great video intro to watch: real people just enjoying the heck out them. What an incredibly wonderful thing to have passed down. Condolences on the loss of your father, but he would be so touched and proud of this. Best to you. xx
Thank you for your excellent views into the magic that is the Leslie speaker! I had tried explaining it to the wife without much success. Your video is perfect! Like your playing too. Please keep that rig forever!
That's a beautiful setup.... I do hope you did some maintenance beforehand on the organ and Leslies though - as they do need regular oiling 😉 My dad took me to organ lessons when I was 4, and I'm now 57 and still thinking about him whenever I play my own B3. He started on an accordeon sometime late 1940s, and kept it for many many years. After he passed away in Jan '99 I took it, and I still have it. Music allows you to convey emotions and memories that words simply can't describe - and when you sit behind that B3, I'm sure you'll feel that connection too 🙏
Great vintage gear. The 1950's were the best years for B-3's in my opinion. The percussive attack on them were killer. Nice groove and wonderful to pay tribute to your father. Later in life, my favorite times was playing music with my Dad. he played guitar and accordion (could play anything with keys) and we would jam for hours. I even taught him to play "Purple Haze" including the dive bombs and feedback, etc. In the 1970's I used a Hammond and those dollies were a back saver.
You sound great...who knows, you could very well go on to be the next Booker T. Jones, of Booker T. & the MGs. or Buddy Cole...both of whom were amongst the greatest Hammond organ musicians around. BTW, either of them can be seen and heard on TH-cam. Don't ever give up! 🎵🎹🎶
Sounds great! thanks for posting and having fun. Ive been restoring Hammonds for maybe 30+ years and hope to save more. Keep em going no more "Real" ones being made.
I am sorry that your "Dad" has died and gone to sleep. However, he played the organ perfectly and better than I can keyboard on the computer keyboard. That music he played is incredibly terrific.
I LOVE THE BEAUTIFUL SWEET SOUND OF A HAMMOND B3 THROUGH LESLIES! You seem to be playing mighty damn fine to me bro. Need a good bass player and y'all are jammin"!
A few years ago, I had a friend that had his setup that used two Leslies. When he decided to sell them, you can bet I was the first one in line with the money in hand. And, I'm here to tell you.... if you think a Leslie sounds good, you haven't lived until you hear two of them daisy chained together. WOW! The sad part is that, when you go live in a large venue, and everything on stage is getting mic'ed, the two Leslie effect is completely lost. In order to really appreciate what's happening, you need to be in a small listening room where the sound you hear is coming straight from the Leslies themselves rather than through the house PA system.
True that! I've used 2 Leslies for a while, and while one is already a full-on 3D experience: using 2 is a sonic whirlwind!! But very hard to capture with mics indeed, the absolute best way is to experience it up close. Miking them both up *can* add some flavour, if they're close enough for the sound of one to interact with the other. Really weird phasing stuff happens that way in between them, and it does really sound amazing... 😎👍
@@claudevieaul1465 When using two Leslies, change the horn speed on one by switching one belt to a different slot on the motor pully. Makes the sound even bigger. And if you think two is big, try three.
I hear you! I built a Passive Leslie 147 clone to hook up to my Yamaha E75. The guts of the clone was made from parts from a Gulbransen organ. I used to sit in front of the cabinet when playing the organ and when it ramped up with a bit of volume, it just swallowed me whole in sound. It was fantastic!
I hope you know how to fix the Hammond. There are few good technicians out there at least in California, so i have to get rid of mine. Good luck and happy playing,
Often imitated never duplicated! Some new equipment comes close to the Hammond Leslie" sound but not really. A Leslie going full tilt and not through a PA gives a sound and feeling experience at from 100 feet or more away that nothing can duplicate through a stationary speaker
@@Earlvis agree 100% - that is why most pro bands still use them and not any of that sampled shit. To my ears the B in a Box and any plug are an insult compared to the mighty B-3
@@Earlvis - making music is moving air. After I stopped hauling the Hammond around (we no longer had a band van) - I went to a Crumar T-1 and finally a Roland running through a RVS amp. No one in the audience knew the difference, but I did. Can't replicate the Doppler effect of swirling sound
I'm sure there will be some more work in the future. Where we will work on some full production. At the end of the day. It was a joy to be in the same room with this B3. Was it my best playing? No Was it fun? Yes Thanks for the feedback, and keep tuning in for some amazing work from Pat.
naaaah, they're just goofing around, really nice if all of us have a space in our home solely for playing music with friends and neighbors who just come around . . . . invited or not. 🤣🤣🥰😍🥰😘😘🙃🙃🙃😗😗😗
@@benjaminacargen7799 Not denigrating any of that. I'm talking about how they recorded the sound in the video. The title of the video is about the Hammond and the Leslie. What comes through the most is the drums which drown out the nuances of the organ/speaker.
The drumbeats complement the organ, and the organ complements the drumbeats. Put them all together, and there is a song that both instruments bringing harmony and rhythm into a song.
What a precious piece of equipment to have handed down. Keep it. No matter what.
Very sweet honoring your dad like this. He left you a precious gift.

Yes, it's the best! Wish I'd taken those stinkin' piano lessons with my sisters all those years ago 😞 Brian Auger is one of my Hammond Heroes!

Super cool, mate! 👍🏻
I gotta say, this is a fine sounding recording! Your mic placement, and in particular the drum sounds, are spot on. Good work lads!
Just like my Twin brother and I. However we are now 72. Loved your sharing here. Skills 🎹🥁🤩🤩
I swear I just felt the air coming off the Leslies when you turned em to high speed! Sounds killer. I’ve got a B3 and an A102 myself.
Sounds good .
I was in a band in the 1970’s. It took 4 of us to unload and set up, but it was worth it!
