Witness History on Wheels: Fairy Queen, World's Oldest Working Steam Locomotive, Embarks on Exclusive Journey at Rewari Heritage Steam Loco Shed
In a remarkable spectacle of history on wheels, the Fairy Queen, the world's oldest steam locomotive in working condition, has taken an exclusive ride at the Rewari Heritage Steam Loco Shed. The locomotive, constructed by Kitson, Thompson, and Hewitson at Leeds, England, in 1855, and later brought to Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) the same year, showcased its timeless charm during this rare event.
The Fairy Queen, bearing the fleet number "22" under the ownership of the East Indian Railway Company, initially served in West Bengal, hauling light mail trains between Howrah and Raniganj. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, it played a crucial role in transporting troop trains. Subsequently, it was reassigned to line construction duties in Bihar, where it diligently served until 1909.
Following its extensive service, the Fairy Queen spent an astonishing 34 years perched on a pedestal outside Howrah station, becoming a symbol of railway heritage. In 1943, it found a new home at the Railway Zonal Training School in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, where it served as a fascinating curiosity object, captivating the imagination of countless students. #FairyQueen #indianrailways
