We wear the mask that grins and lies.
It shades our cheeks and hides our eyes.
This debt we pay to human guile
With torn and bleeding hearts…
We smile and mouth the myriad subtleties.
Why should the world think otherwise
In counting all our tears and sighs.
Nay let them only see us while

When I think about myself
I almost laugh myself to death.
My life has been one great big joke!
A dance that’s walked a song that’s spoke.
I laugh so hard HA! HA! I almos’ choke
When I think about myself.
Seventy years in these folks’ world
The child I works for calls me girl
I say “HA! HA! HA! Yes ma’am!”
For workin’s sake
I’m too proud to bend and
Too poor to break

My folks can make me split my side

The tales they tell sound just like lying

Their flesh count every plank,
The slats leave dents of darkness

And they gnarled like broken candles,

There in those pleated faces
I see the auction block
The chains and slavery’s coffles
The whip and lash and stock.

I could hear it in her voice and see it on her face that she was going to cry. It's our ancestors, it's our history, it's our truth
I wish I knew how to help heal these wounds (that sounds so trite in my head, but I see they are wounds). I'm a veteran with my own wounds, you just can't see them. But these are far more real. I feel like I've had it easy, despite all the crap I go through every day.
The only thing I can think of doing is helping folks in my community that needs it, marching with those who deserve it. Does me marching make a difference?I hope so. My family is terrified when I go, but I don't know what else to do.
Her grace and strength isn't something I deserve. She was never a popular author in my schools, but her stories, and James Baldwin's, and Huey P, and Angela Davis, were by my classmates. Definitely eye opening, when I'd never really read anything like them until I was in undergrad. It feels horrible, like it's something I should have done a long time ago, and it's my fault.
I'm so glad this was shared, it wasn't something I'd heard before. I felt ashamed. I don't know if I should have, but I did. I could tell it wasn't just a poem, but her story, or at least part of it. I hear the anguish.
I'm scared I haven't really learned the lesson, like maybe I'm living vicariously. I've never really been a guy of faith, but this made me think religion doesn't matter; it's faith you have to have just things will get better. I just wish I knew how to get there.
@@Justone177 Thomas, I love that you lay your self bare in your comment. Can I suggest you don't minimize your own "wounds" as you call it. It is just as important to heal from those even as you participate in helping to heal our country.
Even after marching and learning, sometimes we lay down and still have to face our own monsters. Please take care of yourself especially now.
@@akatobi2002 Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've got a long way to go for my own health, but I was very lucky to have such a diverse group of people to serve with, good and bad. It was actually an old supervisor who recommended books by James Baldwin, and when I watched his debate at Cambridge Union (many years later, don't ask, I'll lie), it was far more impactful.
I hope I can learn better. Grew up very sheltered, and dealt with a lot of crap from family when I enlisted. But, with the friends I've got, it's getting better. Don't really feel like I laid myself bare, but just wanted to demonstrate even the normal person is pretty ignorant, even if it's a product of their own society.

I didnt know why I did this but im here now understanding my actions.
This woman changed my view on literature during the end of my school days. I went from the edge of failure and not attending lessons to getting a B in the final tests. My teacher loved Maya Angelou and taught her words with all the passion and emotional she could, she believed in the beauty of the words Maya Angelou spoke. She's motivated me to start writing myself and I will be uploading these on my channel. I may not be able to speak words like Maya Angelou but there's an unbelievable sense of fulfilment in expressing yourself in writing. I hope she can rest knowing how many people she has inspired and gave meaning into their lives.

I experienced the honor to have met this Extraordinary Divine Feminine Energy when I was 12yrs old and she came to speak at my middle school in Berkeley California. I cleverly ask to be excused to the restroom at the time she was due to arrive. I waited for her out front and she pulled up in a Volvo and politely asked me "is there a good place to park around here?"
I told her "You are the Queen of Quill"! "I was hoping to meet you one day!...and that royalty such as yourself get VIP parking on the campus!"
She and I walked and talked in the courtyard for what seemed like Forever and the Wisdom She gave me I will Always Cherish!

Amazing!
This woman's voice always gives me chills every time she'd recite her poems. She's a living inspiration inside my heart. She makes me question my passion for writing as an aspired author, I love her so much ❤
I first read this poem at secondary school, age 13 and it resonated with me then because it reminded me of my mother, grandmother and grandfather all arriving home from various jobs, multiple jobs, and when you asked them about how their day went, they’d turn horrible stories of the racism they’d faced into funny anecdotes that would have my sisters and I laughing. They were the Windrush generation, and they made me so proud. I’m glad to say, I remember Miss Maya’s poem word for word to this day.

I take the opportunity to remind anyone who does that, about the racist mistreatment of the Windrush Generation, about the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence and the Brixton "Riots."
Maya Angelou, and black people worldwide. This burden and baggage and performance you have to display and carry, I'm disturbed. I'm a white girl from Sweden, and my understanding of all this can only go so surface-level. I cry with Maya in her understanding and her witnessing of the world, what she and people now still have to endure. Especially in these times, where power and racism go hand in hand... I cannot say too much, as I have less to say than someone who relates. I only heard this today, but it is eye-opening.

From Matthew 25:31-46: "But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separatethem one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheepfrom the goats. God Himself will separate His true children from the rest.

then you have not understood them. She is over the world's bs and she is over racial inequality by her wisdom. It is all so pathetic she can only laugh. Only laugh but why, because it is so ridiculous it seems unreal , because laughing is genius but when your stomach akes of laughter u can only realise that u have no control over all the injustice, u cry. I'm not going to pretend that I have ever known the struggles that each and every person of color has been through in this country, but I can say I have never heard poetry so honest and beautiful in my many years on this earth. My daughter and I were discussing just yesterday about how hard it must be to just raise a black son in this world, and we talked about how they have to be taught a completely different life than we have to teach our children. I have never been ashamed of my race until the last 20 years or so, but what I saw, what broke me was watching a man who knew he was about to die call for his mother (who I understand now has passed) as he was slowly murdered for 8:46 and the murderer just sat there as casually as if he were reading a book. Why can't people understand that we are ALL human, it doesn't matter what shade your skin is, we are ALL human. Maybe if this poetry was taught to ALL more of us would understand. I want it made very clear; I am a Christian, middle aged white woman from the south, but I will NOT stand by and watch this happen again! I have a 6 month old granddaughter and I want this world to be a better place for her and every child no matter what color their skin is! I have shed many tears since this began and what I realized is that I had no idea how many tears have been shed from a community that has seen this happen over and over... I will end with this; I want every person of color to know that not all white people are like that filthy piece of trash that I watched kill a man, and there's a lot of us who will back you 110% and I am sorry that you have had to wear this mask for so long. May God bless you and keep you, I end with nothing but love and respect for each of you!

Thank you for expressing this!! We need your support. When people think this is a "black problem" they basically ignore it but, when every one comes together in support people start to see it as a problem that affects everyone and since many white people are in control of the system...they are the ones who are needed to make a change, to feel it, to come together in a lasting way. This isn't over when the news stops reporting on it, it has to be a day in day out fight with thoughts, prayers, actions, and efforts. It has to become a LIFESTYLE of love for each other.

@@shynicerichardson85 we use it as a coping mechanism. We use laughter to hide our true emotions just as our ancestors had hide their feelings with a smile so they wouldn’t die.

i feel that with every decade of my life, i am becoming more authentically me. at 40, i stopped tolerating alot of fools and foolishness. and i can't put myself in situations anymore where i can't be me and i can't be valued. i'm 50 now. we'll see what this decade brings.

What an extraordinary reading. I've never seen so much emotion, so much painful truth spoken with such strength until the end. 99 1/2 year old grandmother from Little Rock Arkansas who cleaned homes for a living starting at 16 years old. She lived on her own in her own home until she was 96 years old and passed away in a nursing home on May 15, 2019.

I have listened to this poem a few times and my tears have been uncontrollable. The words ring true now more than ever. We still work harder, give more than 120 % and no one sees us human. We are reduced to the color of our skin each time. The words of the poem cuts too deep, at wounds that are still bleeding, and at this rate, it looks like they will never stop bleeding. We pray on and look forward to the day of reckoning. May God continue to give us the strength to overcome.
