Guan Acui: Bruce Lee's Spirit Unleashed in Kickboxing Arena

  • Guan Acui has one of the coolest kickboxing styles ever, and many in China call her the "Female Bruce Lee." We have three matches to analyze and learn from in her triumphant 2017 KLF victory over some great fighters. Guan Acui has amazing angles, combos, distance management, and a sidekick to end all sidekicks. I'm so glad we took another look at Acui and her amazing Bruce Lee-resembling, Sanda-style kickboxing. Leave a comment and let us know what you learned from her kickboxing style. Is she as close to JKD as we'll ever get? Does she deserve the nickname Female Bruce Lee?

Another thing that she has in common with Lee's Jun Fan gung fu/JKD concepts. She holds her lead hand low - almost like a Philly shell.
Lee famously did that speed demo with Vic Moore at Ed Parker's Long Beach Invitational where Moore could not block Lee's non telegraphed swiping punch (although Moore disputed this and is, in turn, disputed by Ed Parker's disciple, Chuck Sullivan who was present and claims he couldn't stop Lee's punch).
I think part of what makes that Lee's speed punch hard to detect is that it is slung so low outside the direct view of the opponent.
Long guard is used more as an interim guard and is held higher up. Often used defensively against an aggressive pressure fighter to stiff arm or pop them in the chest or neck in order to push them back to create space. It's like teep with your hand.
Muay Thai fighters will not leave their hand stuck out and compromise getting kicked or clocked in the head. That's generally not what the long guard is used for. It's more of a momentary guard as circumstances dictate. Long guard can also be used offensively with your forward movement to create space for a kick, or - believe it or not - like the man sao in wing chun to bridge with the opponent to get into a clinch.
I believe Buakaw uses the long guard effectively. th-cam.com/video/tB7nHMidhis/w-d-xo.html

My teacher said that the idea behind a right hander being a southpaw is that your dominant hand is naturally fast, co-ordinated, and powerful. You can teach your rear hand power but speed and co-ordination are harder. It took me a while to get used to it but it feels natural to me now.

The simultaneous bouncing feet with lead hand low is a common stance in international sanshou. The sanshou meta breaks down to those looking to score and those looking to damage. If you’re looking to score, you stay light and ready to answer any attack with a counter combination. The bouncing ready stance, like TKD, gives you options for lead low kick (opening to various punches or clinch followups) or sidekick.

Forgot to mention that the low outstretched lead hand is for warding off or catching mid/low kicks

The reason we don't see many people fighting like this is because there are better ways to do it. Bruce Lee himself would admit it because he would have evolved over time as well. In the end, it's not the style of the fighter but the fighter representing the style.

Acui is a brilliant fighter. Her southpaw stance is more "fencing", so its not meant for power, but for quickness... and... a very important way of misdirecting and hiding the side kick --- can't help it, the human brain will follow the closer threat. Like you noticed, her angling and head movement is fantastic (as in just enough to evade).
Not sure how to defend against her. It is really hard to see that side kick coming, AND, she can vary it when required. Her leg parries are excellent too.
Bruce Lee's uncanny strength and flexibility would make it like trying to catch a fish in a clinch. Darn those wiry guys! 😁

reminds me a lot of Japanese karate (Shotokan, shito-ryu etc.). Lots of very fast in and out movements, relatively low hands, main defense is distance control etc.

0:57 If you look into it MANY fighters in the UFC fight dominant hand forward. GSP on video said he's actually a left handed orthodox and called it his "secret weapon".
    I have a list lol!
Powerside forward UFC fighters: Anderson Silva-right handed southpaw, Jon Jones-left handed orthodox, GSP-left handed orthodox, Colby Covington-right handed southpaw, Nick and Nate Diaz-right handed southpaws, Dustin Porier-right handed southpaw, Cyril Gane-right handed southpaw, Lyoto Machida-right handed southpaw, and Israel Adesanya is ambidextrous but was born left handed and often fights orthodox.
P.s yes most of this fighters switch and fight well in either stance, that's part of the benefit AND note how Wonderboy fights, he's right handed and when in southpaw he uses alot of lead leg kicks and in orthadox he throws more rear power kicks
