    I'd say go for the ones with structures as its expensive to buy and time consuming to source secondhand polytunnels and sheds. Also you need to take into consideration how close you are to facilities, i.e. water, parking, site deliveries of woodchip, manure etc

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is a really good point! There is water on the site and some of the plots are closer to parking and the wood chip drop off points, so much to consider!

    Yes one or two, it’s important to have a structure but also that the plots next to you are well maintained or you’ll be dealing with the crap growing through to yours. Omg how exciting Laura and here’s to a fantastic 2024 growing season. Stay safe, Ali ⛄️☔️🇨🇦

    Number one for me. Nice big fruit cage and shed looks reasonably good condition (might want to check for leaks though). It was hard to guage the free space for raised beds on that first one but assume it's reasonable and just short grass so you could put raised beds down and not necessarily have to clear the grass. You could maybe take the polytunnel cover off and use metal mesh over the frame for climbing plants like squash.
    I think the polytunnel frame looks better quality on the first one that the fifth one which looks like one of those cheap ones.

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wasn't able to check for leaks on the first plot shed!! The tunnel takes up a good chunk of the space, maybe one third? Maybe more? That is an interest perspective on the frame just as a climbing frame 🤔😅

    • @nitelite78
      @nitelite78 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thetinygarden_ An open frame is much less likely to blow away than a covered polytunnel. It's the plastic that catches the wind. If you do grow stuff over the polytunnel frame then those plants could act like useful shade for veg that doesn't like too much direct sun in summer e.g. lettuce.
      I guess it all depends what you want to grow though as to whether you want a covered polytunnel. I can't have one on my plot because it's just too small. So things like tomatoes and cucumbers I just grow at home on the south facing patio where it's sheltered. I'm going to try and grow some blight resistant tomatoes at the plot this summer but I anticipate they won't do as well as at home in the sheltered sun-trapped patio.
      For the she can you at least check the roof condition to see if the felt looks in reasonable condition? When I got my plot the shed roof was a mess - water poured inside - and I was planning on just refelting but in the end I put a big OSB board as the existing one was rotted.
      I'd give the fruit cage a bit of a rattle too if you can. I think it's quite easy to get excited about having certain features but then when you start working on the plot you realise that things aren't in as good a state as you hoped.
      Good luck whichever plot you go with. I'll look forward to watching your videos as you make progress.

      No1. does have a few bits on it to get my going for sure the poly will need rewrapping,, the shed is cute but wasn't able to check for leaks. It's kind of narrow plot and I'd want to move the tunnel to maximise the other grow space 🤔 💪 but the structures in general might save me some cash!

    @StellasVegetablegardens 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Step 1 - i would get the compass out and work out east west north south then i would chose the ones with the best sun travel position once that is down you can then narrow your options. Allotment is always hard work so your choice can then also consider if you want a blank canvas or if you want an already established plot.
    in all i saw plot one with its poly tunnel is tempting esp sein as you are further north the question though is how much space do you have left to grow on 😅 good luck with your journey of choosing ❤

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A compass!!! 🧭 Stella I don't think I've even owned a compass! All the plots face the same way except no 4! I think I can try my best or orient the beds north/south the catch the most sun as most of the plots are pretty empty. The poly tunnel on plot 1 does seem to take most of the growing space but maybe that is a good thing? 🙈😆

    • @StellasVegetablegardens
      @StellasVegetablegardens 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@thetinygarden_ If you have an iphone you have a compass app. but if you don’t open your gps app they normally have north marked i think 🤔 Part of why we garden is we like to be outdoors so for me the poly tunnel takes away from that but if your goal is self sufficiency even in the winter and being able to grow more fair weather crops in the summer, then a poly tunnel is a good idea. the other poly tunnel is a cheap one which i would only use for a brassica cage if i was to get that plot. good luck with your choice. A blank canvas is the best as you make the space yours in every way - when you take on other people’s ideas they only work so long before you change them 🤣😁🫶🏾

    Hi Laura, wow you have 5 options to choose from, that's awesome 😊 I liked the lots with structures on them as in the long run that will save you money but also you have a place to keep your tools,wheel barrow etc.. number 5 I liked the most because you had raised beds already in place and again that is money you don't have to spend on immediately and you can start planting whilst you set your layout for your lot. I think all the lots have ample space for growing. The only thing I think you need to consider is which lot gets the most sun throughout the day. Personally I wouldn't worry about what other lots conditions are next to the one you choose because you will be able to maintain it and looking at the lots it looks like mainly grass is the cover on the soil. Best of luck to you as you make your choice Laura, I have full confidence in you that you will make the best choice 😊👍

    My pick would be the first one. Fruit tree cage is going to be well worth it, not to mention the shed and the polytunnel (even if it does need a little bit of fixing).
    You'll quickly be grateful for the ready-made infrastructures!

    • @ErraticPerfectionist
      @ErraticPerfectionist 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      #5 would be a close second. It has some really good infrastructure framework as well, with the option for chickens if you're thinking of trying that out. The proximity to the drop off point sounds like it would be very handy.
      The only drawback I could see is it'll be a lot of work clearing out that runner grass, which looks like the popular kind here in Australia. Everybody puts it in and then wonders why it's constantly popping up in their garden beds all the time 😅 it's a tough one to beat, but it is pretty hardy even during drought which is why it's so popular.

      I didn't get to look in the shed on plot 1 which was a shame! Something with a structure is definitely appealing

    If possible Laura have a 2nd visit and take some paper and a pencil/pen.
    Spend a little while on each plot standing at first in front of the shed or where one might go.
    Look at the plot and jot down pros and cons.
    Also consider how you feel as you will no doubt spend many hours tending your plot so having one that feels right is important.
    Also see if your phone has a compass to ascertain if the plot will be sunny.
    Then check the sheds to see if they are usable as they are or if they need attention.
    New felt for a roof or patching areas should be easier than the logistics of getting another shed to the plot.
    Then have a good walk around each plot looking to see what's growing both good and bad.
    Then when you take on a plot make yourself known to other plot holders.
    It's amazing how helpful this can be as you may be offered free seedlings/plants and items to use on your plot.
    No doubt you will also receive conflicting advice but just say "Thanks that's worth considering"
    Just don't commit to ideas as some people can take offense if you don't follow their advice!
    Then enjoy having your own plot. Don't fret about getting it pristine immediately. It all takes time and most allotment growers are still learning and changing our minds about our growing spaces years after starting!
    Even Monty Don on Gardeners World doesn't get everything right and we all have good and bad growing seasons.
    Best of Luck

    Hurray! You have an allotment! For me, it would definitely be number 1 as you have a polytunnel you can fix, you have a great shed you can fix and you have a fruit cage! Wow! Just brilliant as they are all expensive to buy. It also has a fence which again you can fix . My second choice would be number 2 as it has good neighbours and again it has a shed. My third choice would be 5 because again it is fenced and it has a polytunnel although not as good as number 1. Definitely number 1 for me! Laura some things to consider are position of each plot in relation to parking.
    Being relatively close does help both in safety when you are alone but also for ease getting supplies etc to and from your plot.
    Being nearby to water taps is also beneficial.
    Also an open, sunny plot is always a plus although in this respect they all seem to be OK for this.
    I think being next or near neat, well kept plots is another consideration.
    Its lovely being next to like minded plot holders who take care and who will endeavour to keep their weeds under control!
    Plot 2 has one neat plot to one side and I think keeping the chicken coup could prove useful, either to open it up as an undercover small seating area out of the sun or possibly cover it in with solid panels and attach a small door and use it to store bulky items thereby keeping the shed less full.
    Plot 5 has the shed and a fruit cage which is real asset. The neighbours plot on one side also looks in good order.
    For your first season you could purchase special poly tunnel tape and make good the poly tunnel.
    Then down the line consider purchasing a new cover.
    Which ever one you choose I wish you the Best of Luck and hope you enjoy many happy years being the proud owner of your new plot.

      Hey Rosanna 👋 sorry I'm only getting back to you now I had to go the the office today 😆
      Plot 2 is closet to the parking! I think all the plots pretty much face the same way and the sun exposure will be relatively similar. I was very intrigued by the shed chicken coup combo I'd never seen something like that before. But I will want a polytunnel at some stage too I've never grown in one though so it's all very new! I appreciate so much taking the time to share your thought process and you have given me so much to consider ❤️

    A couple of things to consider: which one gets how much sunlight. There are tall trees around and shade can come from neighbouring structures too. It is a lot easier to create shade if you need than to create sunshine, so you are probably better off with something that has as much sun as possible. Another thing: ask around if the site has ever got flooded, if so why. From rain to flash floods, broken sewage, if it has happened try to get the plot on the highest elevation. And last but not least, try to get one that has a tunnel or a greenhouse already. Those are expensive to buy or build, if you can get one to start with that will make a world of a difference in growing summer crops. If you have to repair one, see which one is the easiest or cheapest to repair. A shed is good too, but I think a greenhouse is more important, you can hide in your GH from the rain but you cannot grow tomatoes in a shed. ;-) Good luck and congratulations anyway! 👍

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The tall trees could be a problem it's been so misty and overcast it was hard to see how the sun manoeuvres in across the site!
      I didn't see anyone to ask about flooding but two of the plots are up at the top of the site slope!
      I liked the idea of the shed but you have a brilliant point..you cannot grow tomatoes in shed haha!! Thank you Rev you have given me a good bit more to consider now!! 🙈

      There's a good app called SunCalc (available on Android, not sure about Apple) that lets you put in your allotment plot location and then you can move a bar on the screen and it shows you how the sun tracks across your plot. You can also change the date so you can see how the sun changes between seasons. This can help you see if things like trees might be an issue. For example on my plot there's a row of tall fir trees just opposite my plot - I checked with the app and the sun tracks nicely right across my plot during the morning and the trees start blocking the sun a bit late afternoon. It's only an issue for me late summer/autumn though if at all. Obviously the app can't assess for things like structures on adjacent plots though.

    The less developed ones give you more options to make your plot the way you want without having to demo or undo what is already there, but if you like one of the ones with structures, the one in need of the least amount of TLC would probably be wise. Good luck and congrats.

    I would go for whichever plot is closest to the delivery point. On my site my plot is one of the furthest away from the area where deliveries are dropped off and after moving many tons of manure, wood chip and compost I really wish I was closer. Even simple things like bringing seedlings to the plot can be a pain after several trips.
    If there are two close to the delivery area then go for one with a shed as this is also important for storage of tools, pots etc and it’s also somewhere to hide from the weather, both hot and cold.

    One thing I was happy about my plot is that it's at the top end of a sloped field. I didn't really think about this when I got the plot but when we had a lot of rain a few weeks back the bottom corner plots got flooded. That might be something worth considering for your plot.

    Polytunnel on the other allotment are ripped, cost a bit to replace... the green polytunnel is cheap....but your choice.❤

      @thetinygarden_ just thought it would be a nice she potting shed and fruit cage,if you don't want to keep chickens..wood is expensive so that shed has many possibilities much more secure than a polytunnel. You could get a polytumnel later once the plot is tidied up. Ask a company to sponsor you..x

    1. 2 or 5 ... mainly as they have sheds.
    3 and 4 would be a lot of work. Ours is a actual field and I know from that how hard a blank canvas is but you can make your own.
    I like 5 because you have the frame could just buy a new cover which I don't think is expensive.
    If you wanted a shed if you went with plot 3 or 4 you'd have the cost of that or even just the wood is so expensive.. again going off what it cost us.
    Don't think I am actually much help here 😂

      @@thetinygarden_You can check the DIY stores for decking. They usually have offers on that are pretty good. I got some premium decking (just slightly thicker than standard that's all) for seven quid a board. So just over 20 quid for a 2.4m by 1.2m raised bed (by cutting one board in half. Think delivery was free over a certain amount. I thought this was pretty reasonable but I guess it depends how frugal you are. • @KPKENNEDY
    @KPKENNEDY 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Location is most important.
    The sun. You need to know where the sun rises and sets and where it will track between these points. Then work out if the plot is in a sunny location and where and when it will be in shade. You want a sunny plot. One of my plots has shade one end in the morning and sun in the afternoon. The other end of the plot is the reverse. Put your sheds and compost bins in the shadier areas as plants need the sun to grow. Some shade however can be a blessing to work or rest in in a heat wave.
    How close are you to the water, most of your time in the summer can be spent on watering with a well kept plot. Also carrying water a long way can be tiring.
    One of the plots looked particularly wet on the left hand side, does it flood? (plot 4) You do not want a plot that sometimes floods as it will wash way nutrients, top soil and kill plants in the winter. Plus the ground will take longer time to be in a state to cultivate in a wet spring.
    Sheds are a bonus if they are sound and do not leak. Polytunnels are obviously a big bonus if it is a quality polytunnel, but not if it is a cheap "blow away"..
    Weeds, well all the plots had weeds, nothing surprizing there. However you want to avoid a plot full of bindweed and some other difficult weeds, they probably all got couch grass a slightly difficult weed to control. Unfortunately bindweed dies back in the winter but you may be lucky a see a few leaves to identify it.
    One of my plots was three quarters covered in bindweed when I took it on. I dug a lot out the first winter. It came back with vengence the following summer. I am retired and could visit daily. Everyday my first job was to remove any bindweed shoots and as much root as possible. It was a nightmare, I thought that I had taken on too much. In late summer I noticed less regrowth. I kept up the process the following year. After two and a half years it was all gone. It grows quickly, the roots go down seven feet sometimes and regrows from the tiniest root fragment. It is not esy to get rid of, but it is possible to win.
    Being close to where you get the manure etc is a bonus especially if it is free or a low cost. I did mine out as ROTTED manure for free at a local stable. Its hard work but it is free and I can be generous with it. Make sure the stables do not use weed killer on their fields. Google Aminopyralid to find out why it is bad and how to test for it with a bean test.
    Soil, I will asume that the soil is exhusted due to neglete and people taking from the soil in harvest without putting back in with compost or manure.I assumed my soil was impoverished and built up its fertility over 5 years by adding rotted organic matter to the soil every year. I knew I could fix impoverished soil.
    Raised beds are popular, they do separate paths nicely. However you may find the wood on them rotten and need replacing. I do not like raised beds and removed them from my second plot when I took it over. They are slug hotels.
    Look at the allotments close to the plot, are they well maintained (fewer weed seeds to blow around). If they have some winter crops then are they growing well or poorly.
    The above are in decreasing points of priority. I have put the weeds one position higher than I would personally consider as a priority because I have cleared difficult weeds before and know that I can get rid of them without using chemicals.
    Most of these things aI cannot tell from the video.
    Plot 5 seemed darker than the other plots, maybe due to the trees in the background, the trees however would act as a wind break. Blue plastic laid out at the back so maybe some problem weeds there. I liked this one least of all
    Plot one for some reason, not sure why, but I did not like it. It looks a lot of work, but has been loved in the past.
    Plot 2. Between what looked like two good plots, you maybe able to get some good advice if they are friendly. The side by the chicken coop had some sort of weeds that grew high as the chicken wire was full of dead plant material.
    If they kept chickens then their droppings would have been composted and used hopefully.
    The shed looked interesting and hopefully sound. One side had glass and went back a long way. I asume that this side gets the sun most of the time and could be used as a potting shed and bring seedlings on, which will go someway towards not having a polytunnel.
    That may have been Raspberries in the foreground, if so they need pruning, you need to find out if they are summer or autumn fruiting as they are pruned differently.
    The grass is probably full of couch grass a difficult weed, but not too difficult to eradicate. I could not tell what other weeds where present.
    It looked promising, it did not look too dark, fences both side were wire fencing so no shade. The polytunnel on the left hand plot may cause some shading but would shade the shed so probably not a problem.
    I would put this on your short list, but there is a lot of work weeding to get started, the weeds looked more than one year old
    Plot 3
    The black plastic has been put down because there was probably a weed problem. THe long brown stems on the edge may be docks, a bit deep rooted but can be dug out, however they are prolific seeders so you would need to keep ontop of the weeding when they dock seedlings are small to eradicate them. Not sure why but I had some negative vibs with this plot, but it could make a decent plot with a lot pf initial work
    Plot 4 was much like plot 3 but tall fence on the left hand side may cause shading and maybe a weed problem on the left as black plastic there. I did however like plot 4 as it looked a blamk canvas needing a lot of work but it looked light and airy.
    So in the order that I liked the plots most liked first is 2,4,1,3,5. It is the potting shed that has so much potential that sold me on plot 2
    When you take on your plot cover the ground that you have not started to work on to kill the top growth and if left long enough will kill most weeds within a year. Cheapest way is PLAIN cardboard that is weighted down. It will gradually rot so may need replacing.
    The golden rule is to do little but well and do it often. Do not try to do to much at once, it is a big task bringing an allotment back into production. Take photos along the journey as progress feels slow and overwhelming, but photos show you that you have progressed.
    You have choices with the way that you garden. I am familiar with two methods.
    1 Digging
    2 No dig
    I dug my plot the first year removing weeds and weed roots then mulched the beds as if I was preparing a no dig bed. After that initial dig I never dug my beds again. Charles Dowding on you tube has loads of videos on no dig but also how to grow vegetables and get the most from your plot.
    Good luck
    Kevin

      Hi Kevin 👋 sorry I'm only getting back to you now I had to go the office today 😆
      Wow what a wounderful comment thank you so much for taking the time to share you experience and knowledge with me!
      I think all the plots pretty much face the same direction. That being said it has been too misty and overcast to figure out (I should have bought a compass!) I was told the sun rises from behind the shed on plot 2 and the cage on plot 1. And like you I wonder if the trees will shade the 3 plots at the bottom of the site.
      All plots have water access but I have also been told, it can be challenging in the summer when everyone uses it at the same time.
      I'm not sure if any of the site floods, plots 1 and 2 are at the top of the slope which could elevate that concern.
      There are stables in the area so chances I can source some manure. I will google that chemical and read up on that test swell. I did see a girl in America spread contaminated compost on her garden and it killed everything. I felt so sorry for her, she had bought it from the shop which was so sad.
      Wow it took you 5 years to build up the soil, that is so insightful, but also comforting because I want to take my time on this plot.
      Sorry about the lack of footage I was drenched through, I didn't realise storm isha was on its way!!
      Love the idea of the potting shed, I have such limited space in my house and home garden throughout March and April I tend not to be able to use my dining table for eating because it's full of seedlings! You think they are raspberries in the foreground of plot 2 wow, I was perplexed I didn't have a clue what was growing through the mini frame!
      My concern with plots 3 and 4 was the lack of infrastructure to start with I would need to build everything!
      The polytunnel on plot 1 has actually dug into the ground so you step down a whole that has been dug out of surface soil level, I'm not sure why it has been dug down.
      Your knowledge on weeds is impressive and your introduction on how to get started is beyond helpful, thank you very much Kevin!

      @KPKENNEDY 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thetinygarden_ I wondered about the water onsite as next to plot three was an IBC tank so wondered if there was no water onsite. My site used to have only one water source coming into the site, and had the same problem. The water tanks near where the water came into the site where OK as they filled first whilst all the other tanks were empty with no water coming through to fill them up. Some form of water storage may help you here maybe collecting rainwater from the roof and or if you are allowed filling up from a hosepipe when the site is not so busy. Many sites do not allow hosepipes.
      I googled "Stables Bromley" to find my local stables in Bromley and then phoned them to see if they had free manure and if they used weediller on their fields. Not fool proof as weedkiller can come in on bought in hay.
      It is a waste product they want to get rid of, some let you dig it out for free (dig out the old rotten stuff, it is heavier but ready to use and fewer trips as the fresh stuff needs to rot down before use and shrinks to a fraction of its size). THey may deliver for free or a small charge. Stack any fresh manure and let it rot before use.
      Why the ground was dug out in the polytunnel was a mystery. It could create three issues.1 water collects inside the polytunnel, 2 Was the fertile topsoil removed and infertile subsoil left, 3 When the wind blows hard polytunnels can become kites and take off into the air and become wrecked. To prevent this it is normal for the covering and post structures to be burried into the ground. Has this undermined the resistance to wind?
      The neighbours will be able to tell you if the plants are raspeberries as they are a little too far away to know for 100% on the video. They will most likely have the dried sepals in clusers left behind from the fruit being picked.
      Autumn fruiting raspberries (called primocanes generally as a group), fruit on the current seasons growth and are shorter plus they do not need support. You cut them to the ground after they have fruited and before they start to regrow in the spring.
      Summer fruiting raspberries (called florocanes generally as a group), fruit on the last seasons growth and are taller plus they do need support. You cut all the canes that have fruited to the ground after they have fruited mid summer. This puts all the energy into the new growth that has started to grow and fruit next year.
      Be aware that raspberries spread by shoots coming from their roots as the shallow roots spread underground, so need to be managed.
      Good luck
      Kevin

    Laura, have a dig around with a fork see which one has good worked soil, the structures are irrelevant, its always easy to think your getting lots of stuff free, poly tunnels and sheds, but if the soil is well worked, you are putting less money in to condition it, you can always ask if you can have the abandoned tunnels and sheds, soil is key, as that's what your aim is, to grow stuff, the structures are not what you are looking for, its good worked soil, that you can get into and grow straight away..The aim is to grow......

    So excited for you!!. My community garden closed this year so no plot for me. I have to learn to overcome my black thumb when it comes to container gardening. I'd need to know...Are you planning To have chickens right away and is any lot bigger by sq meters than another or are they same size? Unless it's much bigger I'd say no to #3. You can change alot but you can't change overall size. So that would be by far my biggest consideration! Next if you want a structure #1 and #2 both had nice sheds. Then I'd take into consideration neighbors. You want to get along with them. Are they already growing anything on fences or anything that might make your plot to shady. Do they use pesticide or organic means to grow? Alotto consider but I'd put most weight on size

    Going with my gut on this and picking #1. It has the bones of a great plot and structures that will likely be cheaper to repair than build from scratch. I guess what would sway me is how the sunlight hits the plot and if any of the others have a lot of perennial plants already.
    My second favorite was #5 with the poly that needs a new cover.
    Hard to be certain on a quick visit.

      So hard to be certain, the whether was horrendous! I have seen some rhubarb plot 2 and 5! I can't identify anything else. Someone mentioned there could be some fruit canes at the front of plot 2? 👀

Given so many choices, I think the only one I wouldn't go for is #3 - just because I wouldn't want to deal with that ground sheet! Will look forward to seeing which one you choose.

  • @kyledowley1444
    @kyledowley1444 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    if u are wanting to customize your plot to ur own preference I'd go with plot 4, looks really tidy and it has a nice fence between you and your neighbour which would help when growing stuff. Or if u are looking to use stuff from past allotment owners, Plot 5 looks decent with a quick tidy it'll look really well. and Plot 5 will give you a polytunnle which can be pricey for a new one. So imo I'd say Plot 4 or Plot 5.

    • @kyledowley1444
      @kyledowley1444 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also think that plot 2 takes up a lot of space with the shed but if u are thinking of having chickens id choose plot 2 as a chicken coop would be very expensive to set up and it already has the framework of one there.

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am just blown away that there are what you call allotments. They actually have land spaces that folks can rent for gardens? Is that part of the apartment complex you have or it is a separate thing? This is really cool, but have never heard of this in the states.

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there 👋 this is a plot of land that they section into plots (usually 50, 90 or 200square meters) and you rent them on an annual basis to grown veg or flowers! They are usually separate from your house / apartment rent. But some lots are run by the local city council.
      They are very common in the UK and Ireland 😀 can't wait to grow more food!! 🙌

      @@thetinygarden_ That is so freaking awesome !! I have never seen anything like that over here. (Granted, I have not really been too far out of my state to really know.) We have to fight in the city to allow a neighborhood collaborative for a plot of abandoned land where a house was torn down, just for the neighborhood or organization to do an urban garden to benefit the community. There are a few such places but often abandoned shortly after the first season, or non profit funding stops. I love that such a thing is available to you ❤️
