- Lawrence County opened the season at Red Devil Stadium on September 1, 1966, with a 28-0 win over Winston County. Roger Weatherwax (20), All-County selection at fullback that season, played the game of his career, scoring the first three LCHS touchdowns - one rushing, one on an interception return, and one on a fumble return - in the win.
The game was not typical for a 28-0 win in several ways. 62 LCHS offensive plays are shown here, resulting in only 133 yards (literally, "two yards in a cloud of dust"). After Weatherwax's one-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, the game remained 7-0 until the final play of the third quarter, when Weatherwax scored two defensive touchdowns in less than one minute of game time (Lawrence County's lead increasing 14 points without running an offensive play!). All four LCHS touchdowns were the result of Winston County turnovers: besides the direct scores on Weatherwax's interception and fumble returns; Tommy Pettus' (82) first quarter fumble recovery led to Weatherwax's touchdown run; and Norman Graham's (42) interception led to Dwayne McKelvey's (10) one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Even more curiously, the game's two longest plays didn't result in any points: Weatherwax's 61-yard run late in the second quarter was nullified by a penalty; and Tony Stockton's (40) 60-yard punt return to the Winston County 15-yard line resulted with the Red Devils turning the ball over on downs after gaining just two yards in the following four plays.
