@@p43210 Dont be sacred! Im 14 and I LOVE SEWING! You just need a sewing machine and some fabric and YOUR GOOD TO GO! You dont need fancy supplies unless your looking into professional sewing but other than that, follow your dreams AND GO FOR IT!!!
Such a cute dress!! Going into summer here - dresses are wonderful. I would overlap and stitch the wrist elastic together to avoid a lump from the knot.
Would love to see a hack on adding in elastic to the waistline on both your dress patterns and how to add a button closure either to the front or the back of the bodices. Buttons down the front would be especially cute! Would also love to see how to create different neck lines to the bodices.
I used to own a dress that I adored and it resembles the open back dress! Just that there were more loops in the back and it was laced up. I've never made a dress before but I want to try making this
Perfect timing - I was just looking up how to sew bias tape around a neckline last night - and that bias tape maker was a revelation to me, I did not know they existed.
I love how both of them turned out, especially the linen bow dress! As a small tip for the linen dress, if you understitch the facing right after attaching it to the neckline (at 12:20), you won’t have a seam at your neckline in your finished product!
I love your videos! You inspired me to do a lot of clothes and to sew them. I really like your creativity and your videos, thanks I am a fan of you from Colombia! ❤️❤️
I’m so glad you find videos like this useful! Let me know if you have any suggestions for future pattern hacking videos, and thank you so much for purchasing my patterns 🧡
This ist a great video, I love that you want the buyers to the most out of your patterns ❤️ A tip for making your own bias binding is to cut the fabric diagonally because then the bias binding makes much smoother round edges.
You could add a casing on the waist seam so you can hide the serged edge. And adding elastic into the casing would help hide the peekaboo down the skirt.
I procrastinated making the hazel dress got the pattern and am so excited and now we are headed into fall (in the northern hemisphere) I'm trying to come up with a way to add a cute puff sleeve to the hazel dress pattern. I think it would be so cute the the square neckline
yes! thank you for those hacks, I will for sure try the open-back one! Very exciting! I also like the fact that I can skip the lower darts that I liked less. Could you also show us how to hack the collar to have it more open during summer? :) Thank you!
This is so pretty. But I think I died a little when I saw you use that bias maker! I definitely need to go squire one immediately! Always look forward to your videos!
I really enjoyed this video and I’m going to have a go at one of the dresses. Can you please do a tutorial on how to make tailored shorts with an elastic waist? 😊
Hi Janelle, always love your videos and look forward to them. When doing facings, I learned recently to “understitch”. If you TH-cam Understitching seams and facings it it will give clear instruction with what I mean.. What a huge difference it makes to dress making. I wish I knew this tip years ago. When you understitch the seams, the facing falls to the wrong side of the garment and makes a sharp edge..it’s brilliant. Check it out. Lorraine :-). PS, I love the tip with the little Bias Binding gadget..will get one of those next time at Spotlight.
Haha I'm finding it so crazy that I was looking for a new project, found your video about everything you made in 2020, I wanted to make the dress you were wearing, and then found out that it has my name! haha also I had a dress when I was a kid that I called 'my rosa dress' which was quite similar to this. Can't wait to make it!
They look great except the exposed overlooked seam at the back of the open dress. Surely this could have been covered up by some bias tape. I definitely need that long sleeve dress in my life.
Thank you, Janelle for the lovely tutorial. Yet, it seems like there's an open gap on the top of the skirt at the back where the serged edge is shown 😅
Lovely both variations! Just one question, how do you finish the part of the skirt which is not attached to the back open bodice? Is it just serged? Thanks!!
Luv your work! Luv your recommendations of fabric here at Spotlight! Delivery for other recommendations are so expensive. What is your seam allowance. Can’t find it on the free pattern.
New sewer here! Question about sleeves, why do some patterns suggest to gather the top of the sleeve before joining it to the bodice? I’m also assuming you don’t need to face if you’re using bias binding? Thank you for helping me understand dressmaking so well!!
It's because some patterns - including the Rosa Dress pattern - design the sleeve to be a little larger than the opening. It's supposed to help with ease of movement. With finishing curved edges, you use either facing OR bias binding, you wouldn't need to use both. hope that helps :)
It was serged, but you can also zig-zag stitch it. If you don’t want the seams to be left like that you can also finish them with bias tape for an even cleaner look.
Thank you for the tutorial of this black dress with lovely flowers 💐 I have a question; if I don’t wanna make it oversize is that ok? I saw that you added two inches. But i like the idea with no zipper on the back. I like the lovely sleeves on the bottom. Please advice. Thanks.
If you don’t want to have a zipper you will have to make it oversized so you can put it on. Alternatively, you could put elastic in the waist instead to gather it and synch it in 😊
Question; I bought some fabric and now I am trying to make a skirt for myself. It’s all going well but I want to add pockets to the 2 side seams of the skirt. So far I am thinking on either adding a *regular side pocket* or an *inseam side pocket* . I know how an inseam side pocket looks like but how does a regular side pocket look like? I am so confused, does it not even exist? As in is it just an inseam pocket that exists for side seams? Please help!
Hi, I have purchased one of your patterns and I am so excited to get started :) However here in South Africa, I am size 8. Looking at measurements I found I am only 8 for the bust and 10 for the waist and 12 for the hips :o What should I do? Thank you for all the lovely videos!
Hi there! Thanks for purchasing my pattern 🧡 With my patterns you can often ignore the hip measurement because the gathered skirt is super roomy. I recommend making the 10 as it will only be a little bit bigger in the bust x
Hi there! Ive just started my sewing journey and I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently - I want to find out when you place your pattern onto your fabric - are you placing it parallel to the salvage? Does it matter where you place the pattern?
Amazing ideas! Thank you so much for helping us making the most out of our Rosa pattern 😍. I recently did a bit of a boo-boo and cut all the fabric for the bodice without realising I didn't have enough for the skirt. Could you do a video on how to make a rosa dress with two different fabrics or maybe one with a tulle skirt? Thanks💕
Thanks for this fab tutorial 👍. Did you know you have adverts interrupting your video throughout? I know other podcasters don’t want this to happen. Just wanted to let you know 😊
Ok so I’ve spend an hour trying to understand binding „where the zip would normally go” and I can’t see anything in the video. Can somebody help me 😩 I can’t see where the binding starts. Is it on the first binding or covering it? How do you fold it so it looks this clean? I’m confused 😂🙈
Thank you so much 🧡 If you are confident printing the PDF, and want to save on shipping costs then I recommend the digital version, but if printing out things is frustrating to you and you want a pretty pattern to add to your collection then the paper pattern is the way to go! Which ever you choose your support means so much to me x
I am size xs petite. Us size or a size 0-2 the most. Oftentimes, even if its xs they still run big or way too long. I bought couple of dresses that i love. Its a colorpurple and the lenth ismperfect but the neckline and the bust part is way too big.i tried now even if i am pregnant, its still way too loose and big. When i sa wyour video im very inspired to repair or alter it except for I don't have experience in sewing. Im afraid im gonna ruine it.

A tip for making your own bias binding is to cut the fabric diagonally because then the bias binding makes much smoother round edges.
I’m glad you liked it! 😊 Yeah I would’ve normally cut it on the bias, but I didn’t have enough fabric this time unfortunately
You could add a casing on the waist seam so you can hide the serged edge. And adding elastic into the casing would help hide the peekaboo down the skirt.
Ooh elastic in the waist is a great idea!

I can imagine the open back dress, with longer sleeves for winter, worn with something under
Could you finish off the waistband with bias tape so the overlocking isn’t visible at the back?
They look great except the exposed overlooked seam at the back of the open dress. Surely this could have been covered up by some bias tape. I definitely need that long sleeve dress in my life.
You can cover it up if you like 😊 I don’t mind the overlocked edge so didn’t want to!

Yes I just finished it off with my serger, but you can use a zig zag stitch on your sewing machine instead if you don’t have one 😊
How much fabric do you use for the black dress? I guess it will be more than in the original pattern, but how much more?😅
