Winston Churchill made a broadcast on the 8th May 1945 "Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight, but in the interests of saving lives the "Cease fire" began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today"

0:12 - the sideways glance from the Chief as his AB was late is priceless!

Wonder how it felt for the Krauts to be standing at attention with thousands of people cheering, laughing, cheering at your surrender? Do you suppose these troops felt embarrassment or anything?

I am somewhat surprised that those high ranking officers were permitted to walk around untethered, they should have been belittled whenever in public, rather than walking around with a level of arrogance, especially since they were the ones who gave the orders that led tro such bad treatment of so many innocents.

Should the civilians be angry at the officers who initiated surrender proceedings for their forces and jurisdictions? Those officers are within their powers to order the civilians to resist the (Western) Allies but instead they chose to surrender. With that in mind, should you be thankful you're not going to get killed at that moment or be angry they were ordered to put you in this situation?

A few observations - 1- 10:53 - Is this real or are we in a movie? German soldiers surrendering their weapons on cue for the cameraman! 2- 11:30 - That is one super tall German soldier! I wonder who he was and what his job was. 3- 12:50 - Those German prisoners were pretty jovial after losing the war; probably giddy from having survived! The soldier with the bushy mustache really wants to be on camera! He looks like he belongs in the First World War!

+Will Law. 2. He was probably a “langen Kerl” grenadier, now being returned to Potsdam. 😊
And did those Danes and Norwegians cheer their liberators after 5 years of oppressive Nazi occupation.

      1. It's not like today, when you just whip out your mobile; cameras took a while to set up, and they were told to wait. I'm sure the scene was genuine.
The soldier with the 'tache may well have been in WW1; after all, Hitler was.

Ref. 1 - posed footage, all weapons would have been cleared and safe beforehand, and all ammunition taken from the surrendeded Germans.

It was sad to see many "Staff Officers" or Leather Polishers as a family member said, were still intent on wearing outdated uniforms, which was against standing orders of the time! Several were at one point torn new ones by Monty who couldn't abide people not wearing their Regulation kit, yes he broke the rules but who was going to tell him, that applied to allied senior officers as well!!

looking at photos of the 8th Army you're hard put to find 2 people wearing same uniform in most photos. Monty tended to wear irregular gear unless on a parade. Generals ofc can get away with some customisations. the only think Monty was very strict on was smoking. he detested it and wouldn't even let Ike smoke around him!

Monty was a bit of a preen wasn't he? If your referring to the jodhpur & boots, I love that look.

Why did all these British officers look like a badly uniformed John Cleese?

In reality all the mirth and jovial behavior by the liberated people is due to them hearing that Chuck Norris was coming.
