    I love the way both UNIEL[ST] and Melty Blood feel buttery smooth to play. I just want to thank Serizawa's design philosophy, the awesome people who comprise French Bread, the fans and community of their games, and the Chemical Lovers for making this video!

    I kinda wish they could make another game with a sprite style similar to Melty just so I can see more characters in that smooth animation style. For being based off a game released in 2002, the sprites in AACC are so fluid.
    It sucks everything had to be moved to HD, but French Bread’s animations shine in UNI as well because they look and move so much better than their competition. They never feel stiff when moving around and there’s so much individual character and personality. The poses are so good, even when the characters die it’s well animated and it actually looks like they’re dead lol

    Can someone explain to me how the combo system works in this game (uniel)? I see juggles, otgs, and reverse beats, but what are the rules? How are players extending combos? I’m only familiar with bbtag and other arc system works games.

    • @THeKallOfCtulu
      @THeKallOfCtulu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's basically a standard chain game, except that everyone can reverse beat. It however doesn't have a traditional air dash, and most characters can't double jump, so air combos tend to be short/limited. Some moves allow for OTG but they're specific pickups (like Linne can OTG with 2C after her divekick hits). Aside from that it doesn't really break any of the rules of your traditional chain game, normals>specials>supers, with the game giving you a sort of Roman Cancel when you win vorpal (the GRD system at the bottom of the screen mentioned in the video). This RC, called Chain Shift in game, basically stops time for a brief and cancels any animation you were in, so it can be used for a variety of things like extending combos (you see Clim in the video do Assault j.A>chain shift a lot in the video as an instant overhead), making things safe, and letting you see a mixup before it happens, etc.

    • @brandonpollard215
      @brandonpollard215 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Combo system is pretty standard with some extra caveats that other fighting games don't have. As you'd expect, it has hitstun decay as a combo goes on, and a similar idea to arcsys games of hitstun and damage proration based on the strength of your starting button (in other words starting a combo with a light button drastically limits your combo options and length compared to starting with a heavy).
      Where the caveats come in is in regards to OTGs, wall bounces, rebeats, and jump cancels. You get 2 OTG's and wall bounces, and your next move that causes knockdown or wallbounce after those 2 are consumed forcibly ends your combo. OTG's and wall bounces share the same counter, so you don't get 2 wall bounces and then 2 OTG's for example. Reverse beat lets you use each button in any order exactly once with two exceptions (self cancellable buttons like crouching lights you can obviously use several times in a row, and the auto combo system also lets you use the buttons that are in your auto combo string again even if you already used them previously). Finally, you only get once jump cancel per combo.
      As an aside, every move with a hitbox low enough to the ground can be used to OTG in Under Night, assuming the move is fast enough to combo after the move you used to knock them to the ground in the first place. You don't have arbitrary OTG moves that you must use to pick them off the ground.
      Some characters care more about the wallbounce/OTG/jump cancel limitations than others, and there isn't really much of a universal combo theory in the game as French Bread did a great job individualizing the characters. Everyone of course can just do series of buttons into sweep, but that won't get you very far. That's pretty much most of the deets on the combo system without getting too in depth.

    Everyone I know is talking about the UNIST Steam release and I'm stuck here, trying to figure out BBTAG.
    Despite having it in my library, I've played very little UNIEL so I probably won't spend my money on UNIST. Can't find time to play all fighting games.

    • @Don_Akane89
      @Don_Akane89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's relatable though. I find myself dropping BBTAG on the other hand, especially considering I can't jack shit about tag games. That & I like UNIST a lot to consider maining it alongside GG. These two & SC6 are probably the only FGs I'll stick to for the coming years.
      If you can play a friend's copy or something, I'd really recommend going through the tutorial at least. It's damned good it'll even teach advanced insights for general FG & not just it.

    • @CrimsonSeas00
      @CrimsonSeas00 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Supposed to be pronounced like exe in execution, that's what the katakana is, and that's how it's pronounced on the start screen of the game.

    • @islaymmm
      @islaymmm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The guy above me is right. And the rest goes "under night in verse exe late est (as in estate, not latest)" according to the official katakana title. And I didn't typo there birth is somehow supposed to be pronounced like verse.

    I never figured out why people translate the name Furansupan. It's not like it makes sense anyway, and we don't say "Japan first software". Although I do admit French Bread is "Catchier", but it still doesn't make sense.

      They translate it themselves, right under the big フランスパン logo, "Soft Circle French Bread."

    I think MBAA was cluttered with too many mechanics and I never made sense of them, even to this day. And its presentation is too minimalistic: music, chara-design, stages, etc. I think their subsequent games made a good thing about streamlining mechanics, but I still find the Under Night series to have a too minimalistic presentation. Subdued music, subdued chara-design, y'know. None of them catch my eyes besides some exceptions. I'm not asking to have ArcSys levels of different wacky chara-designs (that's honestly way too much for me), but I want them to shake their formula a little.

    the designs are simple and not memorable; all the characters in all of these games have to be the blandest in recent memory. the sound effects have no oomph and the music is totally forgettable

    • @stonebbq5474

      gonna have to hard disagree here, the music got stuck in my head for days and is some of the best I've heard recently and while I'm not a fan of all the character designs most of them are really solid & stick out in my memory even though haven't been playing the game that much recently.

      Characters aren’t forgettable but they fall into annoying chuuni cliches sometimes. Personally, I feel the simplicity works in the games advantages, so much anime stuff nowadays is horrendously overdesigned. Also... Melty and UNI have great OSTs, a good chunk of MB songs managed to get stuck in my head for years so that’s something lol

    • @TheGoldenPS1

      Takashi Takeuchi and Hirokazu Koyama (Mahoyo illustrator) are among the best illustrators in this space. Type-Moon is better than Arc System Works character designer/s. Atlus Art Team is also better than Arc System Works.
      Melty Blood Type Lumina is already proving your comment wrong. Fighting games were never about cinematic 2.5D jank that GG Xrd turned into and then all license crap like DBFZ and GBFVS. It feels so slow and not as smooth as GG AC+R. They just want it to look visually stunning which takes away the gameplay for me. I dislike the cinematic element.
