Donald doesn’t really play dt they move him around a ton plays all over the defensive line depending on matchups also there has been one Heisman that played on defense it was the second year the Heisman trophy existed in 1936 🤣
@@answeris4217 Yes. Bruce played most of his career in Buffalo as a 3-4 defensive end which has a lot more run responsibilities than DEs in a 4-3 front. So there’s a saying in football, especially among linemen. “Low man wins” Aaron is shorter than pretty much every linemen he faces, so he gets all the leverage. Not only does he get leverage from being short, he also benches 600 pounds and squats almost a THOUSAND. He is a scary human being
There are different kinds of defensive tackles, but regardless, Donald is pretty undersized for one. Typical DTs are anywhere from 290-320 maybe, but there is the nosetackle position which is also a DT but their role is pretty much to consume blockers and take up space to stop the run. Nosetackles can be up to 350 pounds or even more. Even though he’s “undersized”, Donald has a crazy blend of quickness and strength that makes him tough for lineman to handle. One thing I don’t think this video mentioned was that sacks and pressures are harder to come by for defensive tackles compared to defensive ends, but Donald is so good he gets to the quarterback as often as the best defensive ends, which is extremely impressive.
Hes statistically unique too. Most stat lines you see of 10-20 sacks are typical of very good to elite EDGE players. These are defensive ends or linebackers that specialize in the pass rush. Guys like Von Miller, Derrick Thomas, Reggie White, etc. But for an interior defensive lineman, that kind of production is completely unheard of. 5+ sacks is elite pass rushing production by any interior d lineman. 20.5 is just beyond absurd. Aaron Donalds a freak man
Now you have to watch an Aaron Donald highlights video!! His highlight reel is insane. He’s simply a menace on the field continuously making incredible plays.
Another interesting stat is that this year he was rated a 99 overall in Madden for the 7th year in a row, breaking Peyton Manning's all time record for most seasons rated 99 OVR in Madden.
A large part of his success is the signature move he has adopted from a previous rams d lineman in robert quinn, a move called the "jump chop" where you take one step off the line to get the guard to bite and extend his hands, then you jump off that foot and swim your inside arm over and bat away both the guards hands while also propelling you past him leading to an easy sack or tfl.
John Randle is probably the player I would say was Aaron Donald before him. He was an undersized DT and is in the HoF and has 137.5 sacks which is nuts. And like Aaron he did line up on the edges sometimes as well.
There are certain players that, even when they play against your team/ruin your team's hopes and dreams, you still respect and root for them. Aaron Donald is one of those guys. Seems like a decent dude, doesn't talk trash or show boat and consistently dominates. It's impossible not to like our respect him. As for being undersized, the main reason people were against him was because they assumed bigger Offensive Tackles with significantly longer arms would neutralize him. They were wrong. His explosive speed has him inside those long arms and his absurd power/drive has bigger guys on their butt before they know what hit them. That's not fair... to Donald. They know exactly who hit them.
Bruce Smith holds the all time "official" record in sacks at an even 200. Close behind in 2nd is Reggie White at 198. The resason i put emphasis on official is because the sack wasnt an official NFL statistic until 1982 i believe. Theres real debate on who would hold that record had they always been counted
What makes his sacks unusual is he is a defensive tackle. Most sacks are usually linebackers or defensive ends. Most tackles stop the run, but don't get a lot of sacks.
as a rams fan from germany that got to football like 7 years ago he is my goat! not just defence. his play is so crazy and im super glad the rams got him the super bowl 2 years ago. fun fact: in the playoffs to the superbowl AD99 made the last play in the last 2 games chasing and hitting qbs to force an int and a incomplete pass. that was the perfect way to win it all for the rams!
Charles Woodson, a defensive back with Michigan, won the Heismann, in 1998 or thereabouts. I can’t think of any other defensive player in the last 60 years who had won the Heismann. In fact, I’m not sure it has ever happened other than Woodson.
Woodson was a cornerback and didn't play both ways all the time. He did return kicks, and played snaps at wide receiver. I believe his iconic Heisman pose touchdown run was on a punt return.
Desmond Howard did the Heisman pose after TD’s. Woodson is the only defensive player (he wasn’t a full time offensive and mainly did punt return and even that was all the time) his primary position was DB so no other pure defensive player won it except him.
"In ten years, we could be saying hes the best of all time" Thats... what we ARE saying now. Aaron Donalds been firmly in that conversation for at least 3 years now, and by my estimation most people consider him the greatest interior D lineman ever, and its not close. Hes also in the conversation with the likes of Lawrence Taylor as the most dominant defensive player ever, full stop.
What is being missed out is that Aaron Donald is getting sacks as if he is an edge rusher and is able to stop the run at an all time great level. Unreal! D Tackles are mainly run stoppers not QB sackers
Aaron Donald gets double or triple teamed every play. So even when he doesn’t get the sack his other teammates do because they are beating their guys 1 on 1. He also draws a lot of holding penalties because that’s the only way to block him. Huge impact player not just on stats.
His greatness is not just about sacks....QB hurries, QB hits and tackles for loss are vry important as well. I like the sack stats as well, but you will miss understanding his true greatness if it is defined by sacks alone.
It sucks because the video really lacks on his highlights but, it’s like every play he’s in the backfield so fast. You guys should definitely watch his highlights. It’s insane for a DT to put up stats like a Defensive End
One thing that people forget when calling him 'undersized', is that the matchup at the line of scrimmage is determined by whoever gets the best leverage on the initial hit. If you're bigger and can get underneath your opponent it'll give you a huge advantage, but with Aaron being 6'0 it's almost impossible for any bigger/taller lineman to get underneath him to win the leverage battle, especially with his strength
Donald was the final tackle on the Niners and the Bengals in the final two games in 2021-2022 season, he is my favourite defensive player ever. As a Rams fan we are lucky to have him and it makes the team dangerous even with so so other players on the line. When they added an elite one in 2021 they crushed people.
Sack record career 1. Bruce Smith 200 2 Reggie White 198 3 Kevin Greene 160 Sack weren't recorded till 1982. There are a few that played before 1982 that could be in top 10 in sacks but they arent official such as Deacon Jones I've seen at 173.5 sacks.
The Heisman trophy is shamelessly biased in favor of offensive players - specifically quarterbacks and running backs, with the occasional wide receiver tossed in. The most recent predominantly defensive Heisman winner was Charles Woodson, in 1997. He was a cornerback and kick returner. He also played wide receiver in certain situations (very unusual, even in college). Without the wide receiver statistics, he would not have won the award. Exceptionally talented and dominant defensive players, even interior linemen, are occasionally nominated as Heisman finalists. But they are rarely considered serious contenders. It would be like an old school centre back winning the Ballon 'Or. It just doesn't happen. Defensive tackles typically don't achieve big statistical tallies. Their primary job is to occupy space and blockers, hold ground against the run, and shorten up the opposing pocket against the pass. This frees up linebackers, defensive ends, and safeties to make plays. A defensive tackle might play brilliantly without recording a single measurable statistic. For Donald to rank amongst league statistical leaders from his position, is very, very impressive. The most similar to him is a retired player named John Randle. He was physically a near clone to Aaron Donald, perhaps a bit lighter. He also had doubters. As the story goes, he cheated when he was weighed and measured during his evaluation. He supposedly put two ten pound weights in his shorts and stuffed 1 inch lift inserts in his socks. No idea whether that's true, but it's a good story.
There's a saying in NFL personnel circles -- "The only thing worse than being bad, is being weird and bad." It basically just encourages cowardice in player evaluations. They rarely break from the norm unless they have tons of job security, and they risk that security when making unexpected decisions.
@4:00 defensive tackles can be quite a wide range of sizes. They can be any height really, 6 foot is just about as short as you can get and still carry the weight for the position. Short can be an advantage because it creates leverage against taller opponents. As for weight they can be anywhere from 270-400 pounds. The reason for the massive weight range is because there are a lot of different styles of interior defensive linemen. Some are more about attacking the backfield and causing havoc while others are about just clogging up as much real estate as possible. Defensive tackle just means they line up on the interior of the defensive line (between the offensive tackles) most of the time. Donald can do it all, but most guys his size would be in the one gap attack the offense role to try and cause problems in the backfield while the gigantic guys you are thinking of are more interested on being a massive road block

What sealed him for me as my favorite Ram all time was his last 2 plays in the Bengals super bowl win. Dude literally willed that ring to his finger on those last 2 plays haha
Its a position that doesn't give to longevity. There are only 2 players in NFL history that continued to play at a high level from a 3tech-ish DT position and that is Sapp and Randle who are the only 2 interior linemen to record a double digit sack season in their 30s. If he can keep up just 80% into his 30s there will be no question that he is the GOAT. Sapp who has a strong argument for GOAT already agrees that it belongs to Donald.
Sacks only became an official stat in the NFL in the 80's so there are guys from before who had tons but are not in the record book. If you are comparing his total it is modern defensive ends and outside rush linebackers. In terms of tackles yes Troy was crazy but teams look for their inside linebackers to rule that
Hate TJ Watt wasn't even penalized on the play that basically ended Cam's career after spearing him in the shoulder doesn't deserve the accolades, he's a scum.

You guys should check out Ndamukong Suh college highlights. He was a Heismann finalist, and a complete monster in college. Had a great NFL career as well, but college Suh was incredible.
TJ Watt (brother of JJ) of the Steelers and Michael Strahan retired from Giants hold the single season record for sacks. They are respectively outside linebacker and defensive end. TJ might break this record this year if he stays healthy--he has 6 sacks in just 3 games. He is the best defensive player in the league, closely followed by Aaron D., here, Michah Parsons and Nick Bosa (Myles Garrett trending upward).
you gotta react to the Dolphins. they just dropped 70 on the Broncos. the all time NFL points record is 72, the Dolphins chose not to break the record to avoid embarrassing another team
Exactly. You don't finish with 20.5 sacks as a DT. Those numbers don't even tell the story of his impact on every play. I'll still always love John Randle but Aaron Donald is a whole 'nother level of player.
1:59 Literally none of those schools are “small FCS schools” lmao. 2 are in the MAC which is Group of 5 FBS Aka Tier 2 and Pitt is in the ACC and was Donald’s last 2 years once moving from the Big East. Rutgers is in the Big 10. They’re “smaller” schools in those conferences but not even close to FCS. ACC and Big 10 are “power 5” schools. Which are Tier 1 FBS conferences. Ohio State and Clemson are in the Big 10 and ACC. The REAL shock would’ve been picking Toledo (Tier 2) over Pitt (Tier 1). This guy really didn’t know Wtf he was on about with that section right there. The rest is good
How could you not find the all time sack record on google? I just typed in the words all time nfl sack record and it came up. Not that I needed to google it but I’m just curious what you typed in that made it hard to find
troy never got more than two sacks safeties dont get sacks, defensive tackles and defensive ends get sacks. michael strahan and jj watt share the record.
This is not your fault because you're new to the game, but saying 20.5 sacks in a single season is like "Safety stats" is a terrible comparison...Since you brought up Troy (first name basis with everyone LUL), Polamalu played 12 Seasons but only recorded 12 career sacks....I know what you were going for there but Troy was known as the "Tasmanian Devil"- but a "Sackmaster" he was not.
A kind of prototype version of Donald was John Randle, who was a similarly undersized defensive tackle who was nonetheless a top pass rusher. He's deservedly in the Hall of Fame now, though he wasn't as good as Donald (no one is).

20.5 sacks is not a safety stat, thats a DE/OLB stat
Yeah I clarified at the end of the video. Had a mad 2 minutes there. Just have data and numbers circling in my mind 😂 Appreciate the comment
His height gave him a leverage advantage. He was quick as a cat. The fastest DT in the league and he lived to watch film of his opponents. I wish he would un-retire.
I hope you two watch the highlights of the Ohio State and Notre Dame game if you somehow watch it live
STEVE SMITH SR- AGENT 89 Watch it !
He won a super bowl as well. Aaron Donald is the pride of Pittsburgh
I gotta call BS on the video y’all are watching, if he was picked 13th, a lot of teams were interested in him.
Yes, the all time sack leader is Bruce Smith, Bills wall of famer and NFL Hall Of Famer
Yes pat macafee is the fooooking man!!! Great highlights
You guys should check out Ndamukong Suh college highlights. He was a Heismann finalist, and a complete monster in college. Had a great NFL career as well, but college Suh was incredible.
Appreciate the suggestion Jesse, thank you 🙏
TJ Watt (brother of JJ) of the Steelers and Michael Strahan retired from Giants hold the single season record for sacks.
Chris Jones, Quenin Williams are a close 2nd & 3rd right now
Safeties don't get huge sack totals guys. That mainly goes to DE's and Lb's.
you gotta react to the Dolphins. they just dropped 70 on the Broncos. the all time NFL points record is 72, the Dolphins chose not to break the record to avoid embarrassing another team
The sack record is flawed since they didn't keep track of the Stat up until the 80s. Deacon Jones, another Ram is said to have the most "sacks" ever.
He was rarely on the ground where you’re useless
Charles Woodson won the heisman in 97-98 season. Only Defensive player to ever win the award. (Peyton Manning should have won it that year though)
Have you guys done jj watt yet?
Hey, yeah he’s up in the playlists. Hoping you found him okay 🤞
@@DNReacts found him. Looks good fellas
Guys please react to the dolphins game vs the Denver broncos. Week 3, 2023. Historic ass whooping
And this was all before he won the Super Bowl, sacking Burrow to end the game
troy never got more than two sacks safeties dont get sacks, defensive tackles and defensive ends get sacks. michael strahan and jj watt share the record.
Charles Woodson defensive player to win the Heisman
Bruce Smith at 200 sacks.. Reggie white 2 sacks behind. Michael Strahan holds the single season sack record.
Didn’t tj watt tie the season sack record with strahan ??
Charles Woodson dominated
it never happens because a defensive player influences the game on a much smaller scale compared to a skilled position like qb,wr, rb.
These highlights were weak…go watch his in game highlights….this man is a monster!
Bruce Smith has the record of sacks with 200 Aaron Donald doesn't make the top 20
GOAT ⚪️🔵🟡
I know you two are still learning the game but there's no safeties getting 20 sacks a year.
Yeah I clarified at the end of the video. Had a mad 2 minutes there. Just have data and numbers circling in my mind 😂 Appreciate the comment
So you two are brothers, yeah?
And sadly, he has now retired :(
First one 🥇
🙏🏼🙏🏼
This is not your fault because you're new to the game, but saying 20.5 sacks in a single season is like "Safety stats" is a terrible comparison...Since you brought up Troy (first name basis with everyone LUL), Polamalu played 12 Seasons but only recorded 12 career sacks....I know what you were going for there but Troy was known as the "Tasmanian Devil"- but a "Sackmaster" he was not.
I knew I should've waited to the end LUL
😂😂😂
Dude was unblockable📌
💯
Aaron Donald is the worst Seattle running back in the history of Seattle.
He's a baaaad man
He is not the best defensive player in history. That tittle belongs to the real LT.
Even today, he leads the league in DT QB pressure and he has a bunch of rookies and two year players around him. He’s so fuckn amazing
A kind of prototype version of Donald was John Randle, who was a similarly undersized defensive tackle who was nonetheless a top pass rusher. He's deservedly in the Hall of Fame now, though he wasn't as good as Donald (no one is).
