This is brilliant, I'm ex RN from 1976/83 and I'm amazed that nothing has changed ( except the technology and women on board). The tasks and operational routines are no different at all. If you put to one side the obvious advance in technology and modern systems for a moment you could transfer a member of a type 21 frigate crew to the Northumberland and have no problems integrating.Everything , such as keeping the PEEWOW mentioned several times ( which is actually PWO principal war officer) fully informed about every single movement of the ship or submarine or aircraft under surveillance and the SCC ( ships control centre) closed up...... is exactly the same. Of course the film producers have built up the tension and drama a bit to keep the viewers watching, but in reality the Russians have always tested the fence at sea and in the air to test our reaction........I remember having a Russian " trawler" following every ship I served in........ and the nearest thing to fishing they did was fishing out any garbage disposed overboard ( yes in those days we dumped garbage overboard 😮). This also reminds me of how stupid I was to leave the RN thinking this grass in civy street was greener..........
I used to live in Trinidad and Tobago and occasionally, a British or American warship would pay us a visit. My friends and I would take our speedboats out to where they were anchored and chat with the sailors on deck. Sometimes the Brits would toss a couple of beers overboard to us and we'd have a good time hanging out with them! The Americans never carried booze on board and so we were out of luck on that point but both were always friendly and were fun to talk to! I was always a bit surprised that no liquor was allowed on American ships at all! I also got to hire a boat in Singapore and would go cruise the harbor to try and talk to merchant sailors there but most didn't speak English and so it was mostly a lost cause. I used to go to Singapore on business after I moved back to the States.
That Russian plane in the last episode wasn't a maritime patrol aircraft, it was a TU95 BEAR nuclear capable bomber that was simulating an attack run on the ship

I am wondering, if there is a real reason to publish documentaries with such content. In one of the previous episodes we saw how the Russians disabled the towed sonar on Northumberland. In this episode we see them throwing out some objects nearby one of the major UK submarine bases, and there seems to be little we can do about it. I like this series, it is really well made, but it shows obvious weakness of Navy in relation to mentioned actions. Is this really the message we want to share? Greetings from PL, stay safe.
