This is a master class on how to work with a new angler. Any guide worth his salt would be well served to pay attention to the way Captain Benson establishes the communication between himself and his angler.
Thank you Will. I just watched you and your story on Mill House. I’ve been teaching myself to fly fish over the past year now, from videos and trial and error. So, elbow tucked, 10-2, deliberately, and don’t power fuk it. I’ve got this. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you sir.
Muscle fuck = bad. Roger that. :-) He didn't talk about double-hauling, like the title suggests, and yet I was not disappointed. Great stuff. Well explained.
Easier to use yards or meters than feet. A yard is a much more visually perceptive measure of distance than a foot because it’s about the length of a pace.
Will, right on the money.........newbies pay attention, he has forgotten more than you will ever learn. Try to absorb as much as possible, you won't find a better teacher.
This is flats fishing 101 aimed at a presumably first timer. Alot to absorb there. Will Benson is a master - there is more. Looking forward to the next lesson. Thanks Will!!!!
When I’m on the platform, I always repeat to myself “big numbers left, little numbers right” because the clock, however clear, is confusing to some…like me. I also repeat in my head to strip set… Just one other thing, a “military” way of communicating is just an efficient one. I’m a 30 year vet and we learn “crew coordination” early. It does require both talking. When he says 9, move to 9 and say something. When guide says do you see it, the usual answer is NO. Say it clearly. He may have you cast anyway and direct the cast in flight. Both people need to talk and nobody should ever get snippy during the most crucial moments, usually from sighting fish to presentation over, and after hooking fish. Not the time to crap on anyone. Everyone is disappointed when it doesn’t work. If you want that human on the front looking and anticipating and WANTING to hit a target, be very positive during the most emotional times. I’ve been coached and guided by a lot of humans and crapping on people (blame) comes from frustration (even if it’s true!), not doing what it takes to win. There’s always the next fish coming and the team needs to be primed and ready to execute. My two cents.
Don’t try to power fuck it! Guide on the Snake River said to me, “I’ve seen about enough of your sidearm bullshit”. I never forgot that and I won’t forget this.
This is the best damn instruction I've seen on You tube. Can't wait to go out and practice. Thanks

Sweet instruction. I’ve watched a lot… this one hit home.

Holy cow that was the best 6 minutes of casting 101 I’ve ever heard and it was in dumbass term so I got it! Lol
I concur.
I completely agree! Will is the man!

A little arrogance but I get the point. Rather have this dude than a guide we had in Belize who was a disastrous communicator.
A 'little'! I think you're being kind. There are ways of instructing clients that doesn't include talking down to them or taking a superior tone.
He’s clearly pissed cause it’s some rich client that can’t cast 30ft

What fly line did he use? Looks like it just shot out of the rod loops--no double hauling!
In six minutes you said more then most have in the last 6 years of fly casting instruction. Can I get an Amen!!??
You are absolutely right! Will Benson is such a beast! @worldangling
This guy is legit
Very nice instructions
Awesome!
Phenomenal guide! Will is at the top of his game!
I wonder what rod he is using.
