Kai's backstory is so much more tragic to me after watching this. I'm glad that Kai and Sei had a beautiful brotherly bond. I'm also surprised to find out that Gashu wasn't as bad as I thought he was, and he had emotions after all! Thank you so much...Kai is one of my favorites, and I'm glad I got to learn more about him.
Man seeing lore for 3 characters who definitely needed it feels so good. Kai was my first favorite when I got into YTTD and I'm just....sobbing even more for him. Kais story made my sob so badly poor Kai (and Sei, don't think I forgot abt sei) and it's cool cuz we also get to see a bit of gashus story and a bit of info abt "asunaro" and "the organization" too also I'm guessing that "???" girl is midoris mom bc of her crazy ass hair (when I first saw her I thought she was nao for a quick sec lmao)

Epic Aynalsis~ Out of everyone, I feel like Kai got it the best (that's saying quite a bit since he fucking died) He got to live with a family and his final moments were ones he was in control of. Although, that's not saying he got it easy. Even before Sei's death Kai barely got any affection and was treated as a tool. Some nice symbolism I can find is Gashus way of connecting affection and cake. (Terrimasue) Kai absolutely adores it, he's excited to see it and wants it. Sei is more reluctant, it's not that he doesn't want it but he would rather have cake (or affection from his real father). Another interesting note is that Gashu doesn't give Sei cake because he actually cares for him, rather he wanted to see Kai get jealous over it, which Sei easily noticed. Gashu's story is interesting too. He was always a bad dad for sure, but definitely not the same dude we see in the game. He genuinely cares for both his sons (which was honestly a suprise). After Sei's death however he was forced to grow more cold and insane as he devoted himself to Asunaro more. It kinda sucks, seeing a normal guy turn into Gashu. And in my opinion the cruelest fate, Sei's and Rio. (Rio was always one of my favorites so I'm gonna get a bit ranty XD) Sei already got the short end of the stick, seemingly right after losing his father he was taken in by Gashu to do assassain training. Not only that he knew from the start that he wasn't desired. (Prehaps he was even told to act the way he did) Sorta like a Pokémon rival, his only purpose was to push Kai to be better, not to ever be seen as anything else. Although after his second fight with Kai he they seem to be more of actual friends (Kai no longer calls him big brudder (I also found that part weird since I saw Rio as the younger one since in the game he's like 3?.) But even after death it just fucking continues. At some point Rio is made. Rio entire exsitence is literally just suffering, he doesn't have any positive traits nor can he feel any emotions other than jealousy and hatred so he just hates everything all the time. Even in his final moments he was given positive traits and emotions just to feel bad about what he did and die ten seconds later, he didn't even get to die ignorant. It's unclear in the game whether Rio has Sei's memory's, because if he does it would just make it worse. Rio would have memories of being able to feel positive emotions but he himself can't. (And I'm like 99 percent sure that's the literal definition of hell-) Also the ai's aren't able to remember there deaths (quote from ranger "We tried to program memories of his death but when we did he just broke") so Rio's last memory would be him fighting Kai, he probably thinks he was killed by his only friend.
As someone who kins and is emotionally connected to Rio ranger and just over all likes his character; I just cruised from the video why are you making me sad /j
considering the fact that ranger wears kai's apron around his waist ... i really wonder what that was like when he took the apron, although im sure he doesnt have those memories built into him that let him recognize kai ...
I’ve seen a lot of debate in the comments about whether Sei and Rio are the same person, whether they’re different, etc. I believe it is heavily, heavily implied that Rio is Sei. Rio is created in his likeness for one, looking to be about what he would be if he were still alive (mid to late twenties as Kai is) and the way that the two speak and act is extremely similar, especially if you analyse the way Sei behaves in terms of his negative emotions. His inferiority complex, his willing to kill and pessimism surrounding their situation. The main difference, and the point of Sei being here outside of the beautiful story told between brothers, is that we see who Rio Laizer would most likely have been. Sei has the kindness, compassion and happiness that Ranger was lacking, and if Ranger was given the memories of Sei on top of all this, it makes him all the more tragic. I’d argue it’s implied he did have these memories, since Safalin states ‘You must know the extent of what we took from you’, implying that he had memories of being able to feel said emotions, but could no longer achieve it. All in all, I think this little segment was absolutely amazing. It showed us insight into Kai as a character and elaborated perfectly on why he had not killed anyone, showed us an entirely different side of Gashu, and gave so much more backstory to Rio and somehow managed to make him even more of a tragic character. Amazing work as usual from nankidai.
The Gashu we saw in chp 2... Is he a doll or he is the real one but driven mad? He really acts so differently from Kai's past... I guess he definitely intended to make Rio based on Rei, their inferriority and way of speaking are so similar. I really want to see how Kai will react if he sees Rio
I remember watching this 6 months ago, this singlehandedly made me obsess over rio and my friend obsess over kai EVEN MORE. And now 6 months later im planning to show this to my friend
