  • Shodoshima and the surrounding islands in the Seto Inland Sea have a number of quarries where stones were shaped for use on Osaka Castle and other regional fortifications. This particular site at Tengu Iwa is home to some very interesting and beautiful stones, with markings still visible from the hand tools used to cut the rock. Today we were lucky enough to have a bit of rain which I think adds a nice atmosphere to the forest. It's a short walk, though I did investigate a trail leading off into the woods, hoping to find more quarry remains but with no luck. I enjoyed walking among the stones, bamboo, and lush green trees in the rain, very peaceful and relaxing, with the stones providing a bit of historical interest. I hope you enjoy the walk too.

Ambient Exploration: One of your shorter videos, but still magnificent in its amazing content, the relaxing forest walk in the rain at Tengu Iwa, Stone Quarry for Osaka Castle in Shodoshima, Japan was truly a beautiful treadmill walk for me! I was so impressed seeing all those double staked wooden logs for steps up and down the quarry trail, especially in some really narrow passages and places between rocks so small, but wide enough for you to get through, even while filming. I found those notched hand tool worked large stones so fascinating to see. I've been to Osaka Castle because my American born niece and her family resides in Osaka. (She teaches English to her high school students.) Thank you for sharing this historical place! Happy Safe Travels, Margie

You deserve a medal for negotiating this brilliant beautiful trail, carrying an umbrella and filming at the same time! ☺️👍🏻How magical is this place and truly beautiful artistry in the stone work. A monumental job for an artist. Were the rocks decorated in historic times?

Thank you! Some of the markings on the stones in this quarry were used by regional lords to lay claim to the stones for future projects. Others are tool marks of unfinished cuts that were abandoned for one reason or another. I can't imagine how difficult it would have been to move the cut stones down to the shore, probably a shade more difficult than carrying an umbrella and a camera😄

It would be interesting to learn how they moved the stones down to the water for transport to the castle sites. There's a museum on the other side of the island I'll have to check out one of these days.

Well done walking up those steps! I would have tripped multiple times - would not have made for a very good video!!
